Cashing in change Downtown

Thanks for the advice everyone. Didn't get to check the boards last night. Unfortunately our pet bird Percy died last night. Wife and I are pretty sad. Anyhow; I know Percy would want me to hit multiple Royal Flushes and take down a WSOP bracelet. So figured out that my wife's bank had a branch with free coin counter. All done. Previous to figuring that out, I had phoned the cage at El Cortez and the Cal. El cortez said I would have to use the machine on the casino floor which charges 5%. Cal said they would change nickels and quarter's only. For some reason I always thought El Cortez offered that for free

 

It’s not downtown....but I believe Ellis Island still has a coin machine with no service fee

 

El Cortez has a self service sorter which spits out a ticket to redeem at the cage for a 5% fee. On my last day I took all of the quarters and nickels I had accumulated from cashing in TITOs, put them in one bucket and handed it to the cage. Cashed out no fee no problem.

How much was in the can?? Gotta find out who won the pool.

 

Not sure, from what I remember, MSS and the Cal do not accept certain coins, like dimes. Also not sure if they accept pennies, dollar coins or 50 cent coins. They accept nickels and quarters because that is what runs though the machines. I was at MSS when someone brought in his bag of coins. The cashier said that the guy had to separate the coins because they don't accept certain coins in their machine. Not sure if that is so but I guess they don't want to bother with coins that aren't part of their slot machines.

 

Yes, no reason to carry that weight around.

Our credit union has a DIY machine, but I think most banks will do it for you at the teller.

I always felt the casinos should have a donation bucket for loose change to help the homeless. I know I would throw loose change in a couple times a trip.

I actually made this suggestion to a casino once. I guess the casinos suits want every last nickle.

So it was a disappointing $52.99. Does the Department of Weights & Measures regulate that thing? Might have to phone some connections at the County.

Nah, IMHO the casinos already have enough of a problem trying to keep the homeless and unsurly out of their area. I was at the Cal 3 weeks ago. I was playing craps when this "dirty" looking guy came up to the table. He didn't play, just started talking to no one in particular and leaning against the table. Eventually the pit people called security who escorted him out of the casino. Another day a homeless person was near the MSS entrance, asking for handouts. Security was called and he moved along, only to urinate against the building (I saw it happen). Police were called and eventually they took him away.

I feel that if they set out donation buckets people will only break into the buckets and steal the money.

I hate change in my pocket so I always give it to my buddy, almost as a joke. Last time we flew home, TSA made him pull the bag of change out of his carryon. This time, we were staying at The D and he just went up to the cashier and asked if they would change them in for him and explained the previous TSA issue. The cashier said it was no problem, they do it all of the time for that reason.

 

I believe a lot of the stations properties have one to benefit a food bank they will also accept TITOs.

 

TSA did the same thing to me, with the added bonus of actually going through the bag of change. LOL

 

I had a side pocket full of change when returning from my recent trip to vegas, the TSA pulled the bag aside and glanced at it, wasn't too bad, just a quick look.

 

Our local casino has a large clear glass case at the exits where patrons can drop in tickets with small amounts left on them to be used for a local charitable cause. I have not see any ticket donation cases Downtown, but a good idea I think.

Wow finally I get why we have that nickel glut, i usually do an ocd count of piles to leave for the maid but next time I will leave bills, and do a change dump at cal for a run at the ultx machine for pennies, will post results.

I have been encouraging my gf, though I'm happy to do it, to do the coin droppers for all the quarters as an offering to the vp gods and to appreciate the technology of TITOs, you almost don't want to win so you don't have to deal, but a 4oak or a royal would be a hoot to hear.

 

I think I have seen parking meters on Fremont Street that have been repurposed as donation receptacles.

 

I always cash in my change before we head home from the CAL. It is pennies and dimes that the cashier won’t accept. I usually end up with around $30 in change. I keep it separate and put it directly in my coin jar when I get home for my next trip
