    My Trip Report

Trip Report 05/22/19-05/25/19 – South Point

This was my eighth spring trip and the second with my friend Dave. I appreciate bringing Dave along because he is very appreciative of the way we are treated at South Point and thankful for the comps I can secure. And fear not Bobs fans, we are already booked for our 32nd consecutive annual trip in October.

    Air
Southwest from Chicago. Airfare was a bit higher than I would have liked so I paid $152 for one way and used points for the other. I did not do early bird as Dave gets priority boarding due to foot issues. So as his companion, I also got early boarding. Good thing as I had B41 out and B1 back. Flight out was really pretty awful. Completely full and strong headwinds gave us 4 ¼ hours of actual flight time (takeoff to landing). That’s about 45 minutes longer than normal. Throw in a storm cell over the Vegas Airport, a so-called medical emergency (drunken A-hole refused the paramedics after we all sat and waited to deplane), and really crummy service by our flight attendant and it was pretty miserable. For that length of time, I’d expect more than one pass through with the snacks. Also, I’ve been dealing with a cough and cold and really needed some water to stop coughing. I asked the guy to please bring me some water asap. Twenty minutes later, he brought it with the rest of the drinks he was serving. But to give him credit, he did manage to spill the water on me and my LVA newsletter. And that was not the only time he spilled water on me. Lazy and useless. I knew we were in for a bad flight when a Grandma across the aisle from me (also early boarding) told her husband in the row in front of her to save the seats for the “babies”. It was twin nine month olds, neither of which was happy to be flying. I could deal with crying babies since it’s not their fault. Grandma, on the other hand, kept getting up and down and fussing over them (yes, the babies parents were also there). They kept switching seats and switching who held which baby. Honestly, everyone around us just wanted to tell her to sit the eff down and maybe the babies would then go to sleep. The return flight was better as was the onboard service. Honestly, I’m not much of a fan of SW these days. Seems to be many cancellations and delays and they need to improve their communicating with their passengers. If we’re going to sit at the gate for 20 minutes before leaving, TELL US. TSA Pre-check was pretty smooth at Midway and empty at LAS.

    Transportation
Due to our arriving about an hour late, we were unable to catch the SP Shuttle. Thought 50 minutes of lead time would be plenty. So we took the rental car shuttle and Dave got us an Uber from there for about $10. Worked out great as our driver was a former Chicagoan and a good guy. We did use the shuttle going back to the airport. I felt bad for the driver as he had to unload a whole bunch of bowling balls (long tourney going on at SP). I hope those folks tipped him but I didn’t see a lot of them do that.

    Hotel
South Point – We arrived around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. Check-in was very easy, and they had my preferred location available. I really do like the remodeled rooms at SP and the mini-fridge is a great addition. By day three, Dave thought the room was getting like a meat locker. I still thought it was way too warm. The room was comped again by Courtney who is a wonderful host. She also set up the Bobs fall trip, five nights comped. She is absolutely the best.

Housekeeping was a bit erratic. One day only one drinking glass, next day no hand towels. Third day was all good. The room was always made up timely. I tipped the maid $5 each day and she provided some extra soap and shampoo along with a nice thank you for the tip.

    Entertainment
No shows, as usual. However, we did have some entertainment as a woman from Thailand started giving Dave a massage at the blackjack table. We had seen her the day before but did not know she was a “masseuse”. After massaging his arm and neck, she asked him for $60. He declined. The best part of this was when Dave went back to the room for a while. As he was getting on the elevator to come back down, she was getting off the elevator. She tried to get him to come to her room but he fled quickly. I was laughing my ass off when he told me she was staying right down the hall from our room. Massage indeed.

    Food (rated 1-5 forks)
Breakfasts – First morning was just coffee and an almond croissant from Seattle’s Best, 3 forks (could have been higher but for some reason they put the croissant in the microwave so it lost its crispiness). Second morning I had coffee and a bagel from the Del Mar Deli, 4 forks. The final morning we had the brunch at the South Point Garden Buffet, (around $9 each with the SP coupon, but comped for us) 4.5 forks.

Lunches – One day I had the hot dog from the cart. It is at the SP sports book and costs $1.25 (4.5 forks). One day I had the “cup” of chicken matzo ball soup from the Deli (4.5 forks). I figured maybe that monster cup would cure my cough and cold. The picture doesn’t do it justice; it’s huge. And it comes out boiling hot. It takes about 20-30 minutes to finish and it was good.

    Soup

Dinners – As always, absolutely no complaints about any of the three meals, with the exception of yet another high priced free buffet on night one (explained in Gambling).

Night 1 – Garden Buffet (4 forks). Dinner consisted of one nice slice of prime rib, which was rare and tasty and a piece of fried chicken. Dave concentrated mostly on turkey and pork, which he said was excellent. I also had some soup, salad, sushi, and a slice of pizza. Desert was uninspired. At full price of $17 for slot club members ($20 without a slot club card), it’s worth it just for the prime rib.

Night 2 was at Baja Miguel’s (4 forks). I had my usual shredded beef tacos, which I really love, and a pork enchilada that I could have done without. Dave got a chicken burrito. DJ (pit guy) gave us a $40 comp for this dinner which easily covered the tab.

Night 3 was the normal final night dinner at The Silverado Steakhouse (5 forks). It was, as always, an excellent dinner. Start with the baked French onion soup, which is truly outstanding, add the house salad, and the eight ounce filet, with an excellent baked potato (hint, add bacon to the potato) and you have a wonderful meal. The delicious steak was cooked medium rare and my water was consistently refilled as needed. Dave got the pork chop and thought it was outstanding. Dinner was $92 and was covered by comps from Dan, who along with Todd, DJ and Dave (not my Dave), are great pit guys.

We had about $25 in meals/coffee that were charged to the room and they were comped off by Todd. Total out of pocket for food at SP for this trip was a big fat zero.

    Gambling
This was not unlike last year. Granted, we didn’t play a whole lot of VP but we caught (as best as I can recall) one full house and two quarter quads. Last year’s free buffet cost us $420. This year was better, it only cost about $200. That was our loss for earning 300 points each to use the ACG free buffet coupon. I’d guess overall we lost about $400 on VP for the trip. Other than that, we were about breakeven. We had some fun playing blackjack (even with the Thai masseuse). Many of the dealers are enjoyable but there is still the occasional “stone face” dealers that just are no fun at all.

Not much else to add. I’m throwing in this last picture just to prove that I, at some point, actually went outdoors for a few minutes.

    Sunny Day

This was kind of a strange trip for me since I was sick for a week leading up to it and am just now getting over it. Plus, I am selling my place and buying a new place at the end of this month. Stress much? I’ll be glad when that is over and I should be back in fine form by October when I expect to meet some homeless guy named fredo. Looking forward to it. Any questions, the floor is yours.

Glad you had a fun trip. That prime rib looks absolutely perfect. A really well cooked roast (med-rare) with a big cap. Mmmm.

You should’ve ate once at the Coronado cafe, excellent breakfast, lunch choices.
    Easy to get comps there.

I have to say, South Point is the one casino in Las Vegas where I expect the dealers to be unfriendly. So different from the rest of the city.

Bet one race just to kill some time. Cashed but lost a bit on a WP bet.

Maybe it's because I've stayed there 20 some times and know many of the dealers but I find many of them to be very friendly. The best are Olga, Carlos, Jill and Sam. And Janet, one of the cocktail waitresses is outstanding. She not only remembers how I want my drink, she remembers what I drink. And that's from trip to trip. I don't even have to tell her from the first drink, she knows.

South Point is a very interesting amalgam of various specialized pursuits in a humongous setting. My posse glommed on to it after been S. outta luck on the main southern Strip & the M, when we came for the Breeder’s Cup.

Everywhere else was all reserved and pricey. Even though there was no less interest in the Horse Book for the BC, as it was jammed, SP had the smarts to open up the upstairs Banquet Rooms and THOSE got filled- with us!

So, I for one, really appreciate your TRs on the place, as we are still learning all the Ins & Outs! We will be back to SP therefore, for our 3rd. consecutive year, day before Halloween.

In order... BJ & Sports gambling on Wednesday & Thursday, BC on Friday & Saturday, NFL on Sunday- Monday with BJ, touring outside Vegas on Monday & Tuesday,

If you’re around then, I’d be happy to meet up.

You make me want to try South Point. Been to Vegas over 20 times and never went there. Food looks incredible and the pool looks nice too.

Your plane ride over sounded awful, but the rest of your trip sounded great! I too am a fan of South Point. Thanks for the trip recap!

I enjoyed your TR, just the right amount of detail and pics. And it’s nice to read about the friendly relationship you’ve established with the staff. That taco and enchilada is my kinda meal.. Thanks for sharing.

If you prefer the main race book area, you should be able to reserve some seats about a month in advance. We did this once and got the exact seats I was asking for. Not sure the size of your party but if it's four or less, that would probably work.

Thanks to the rest of you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the report.
