i have seen people discussing the MGM organization and layoffs but have other people noticed the degraded state of the MGM Grand? I have no axe to grind with them as I have stayed there at least a dozen times but the hotel is a wreck. Torn and stained carpets and walls, rooms (west wing) trashed, maintenance problems, security problems, massive check in wait times......what the heck happened to this former gem of a hotel?! This started way before any layoffs.

    Kirk Kevorkian and family lost control of their own company is what happened. Poof no more investing in infrastructure. Not alone in that trend. Circus Circus, Excalibur, and Luxor all look like disco era relics. From wickapedia;

As someone who really enjoyed staying and playing there it is just really sad to see what has happened. I’m going to town over Memorial Day but can’t even consider staying there.

Sorry to hear about this... I notice a lot of little things, probably more than a lot of folks and it's incredibly important to me to patronize a place that keeps the "shine on the joint". Deferred maintenance and lack of reinvestment into the plant is a sure sign of worse things to come.

That was 10 years ago. To think they haven't updated any of the MGM properties in 10 years is silly. Most rooms at Luxor were just remodeled and their entire food court was ripped out and replaced with a modern one. Excalibur room remodels turned out well, the widescreen rooms are a decent value. And their entire casino layout was updated, and the carpets replaced, in the past few years.

MGM redid their food court over the past few years as well, but I do agree with @Yo ElevenMan that she has been left for dead. The old mall, under checkin, is truly sad. That big empty space in the rear of the casino, by KA, has been empty for the longest time.

As their namesake property, it needs an overhaul.

It's not for everybody. We all go to Vegas to enjoy specific features that we like. So if that casino is lacking in the quality of those features then we think bad of it. But what's considered bad to you might be great for another demographic. For example I, for one, could care less about the quality of the carpets. And I bet families on a budget would love Circus Circus and Excalibur

MGM grand has it's strengths and still has a great diverse selection of restaurants. Everything from fast food to upscale, and has the best pool facility on the strip. Its clubs, Hakassan and Wet Republic, are one of the more popular night clubs and day clubs respectively. It's still a great place to visit for certain people.

It has tables now. In the past, it often wasn't filled because they used it as a flex space for tournaments and events

As I said I have nothing against MGM. I will likely be staying at Mirage which is also an old property but they keep it nice. Nothing wrong with old if it’s well maintained.

Glad to see there are tables, i walked through last Oct and it was empty. As it was for at least a year before that, after the took out that small roll of tournament machines.

It used to be packed with slots! My favorite money mad martians used to be back there. Played that same slot in Vegas for 15+ years until they took everything out back there.

I had forgotten about those slots! There's still some empty space (only about 1/3 has tables now), so maybe they will fill it in again

that area will most likely remain partially empty for the near future as they remodel the Mansion casino. On busy weekends, they need to put extra tables out there, as well as tournament tables for the Bacc / BJ / poker tourneys they have at least once a month. I walked through that area with my host last visit, and I commented about the vast empty area, and the above is what he replied with

Even Skylofts are starting to show a ton of wear and tear.

Plus, their in-room tech was on pointe 10 years ago. Now, it's just old B&O equipment with really outdated UIs.

Look at the ratings of MGM properties on Trip Advisor.

MGM Grand is #127 out of 267 properties. Bellagio is #62 now. Aria Sky Suites is #6, it used to be #1. You can't have it both ways. Either you can squeeze every single penny of profit out of a place, or you can provide excellent standards.

It isn't like MGM Grand or any of their properties are dumps, because they aren't. But the fact that Almost half of Vegas hotels is considered better than MGM's namesake property is just pathetic, and there are reasons for this. Even more pathetic is MGM's showpiece, Bellagio is rated lower than Sam's Town and Polo Towers. Murren and everyone who thinks like him needs to go.

I wandered in on a trip a year and a half ago, and it just felt dead. Definitely not the MGM I stayed at and enjoyed 9 years ago. I think it's such a huge property that a face-lift would be very costly.

I dunno, I stayed there late last year and didn't really notice anything amiss. The Tower room was fine, not run down at all, could probably use a light reno if for nothing else but the bathrooms but it seemed par for the mid-range prices they charge for them.

I've also walked through the place on nearly all my trips since I started going to Vegas in 2011 and haven't noticed much of a degrade. Not much has changed in recent years venue or casino-wise but there wasn't much "wrong" in the first place, IMO.

I’ve never cared for MGM. I only go there if I have a myVEGAS to redeem. I’ve also never had any luck there. I prefer CET and center strip. Though I stroll through Bellagio most trips.

There was a day when the Stardust was nice and people loved it. Same with the Sands, Desert Inn, all of them.

Nothing lasts forever. Not saying this is what is going on here but I sort of look forward to some of the nicer places falling into a but of disrepair. Will lower the prices so guys like me can afford to stay at them.
