Avoid Sunrise if you can. You will have to go to UMC if trauma, but for anything else, try to get to a Dignity Hospital. HCA runs Sunrise and a number of other LV hospitals which is why we rate so bad in national rankings. BTW...the medical school just opened a couple years ago so maybe there is hope for the future. The second post in this thread by Joe is exactly right only, IMO, he sugar-coated it. (I work in healthcare and my wife is an RN)

Should have added, the hospitals are much better than the schools.

I have never had to go to ER in Vegas. But as an ER nurse that has worked big city and small town ER's, Vegas falls into the big city long waits. There are 24 hour clinics in most big cities. So fur urgent care I would suggest utilizing those if you have a non-emergent issue. - Many of these would expect payment up front. Popular ER nurse saying - Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. -- I live in popular tourist destination in Texas. I'm amazed at the amount of people that just pop into our ER for a chronic issue-- I've had Knee pain for 6 months and might as well have it looked at while i'm here. Many big city ERs also post their ER wait times on their websites. What this means is the time the when the Doctor lays eyes on you. Which may mean a quick one minute evaluation - not when he actually orders all the needed tests and medication. Big ERs that doctor may be seeing 18 or more patients at one time.

Also most big cities when you call 911 for an ambulance they will take you to the nearest appropriate ER not the ER of your choice. Planning ahead and looking at your options is a good idea. As my husband and I age it is something that I need to look into. Thanks for posting.

And as a side note - no nurse in a hospital should be rude. We go out of our way to make sure the patient can get the prescription filled and that they can afford it. There are all kinds of antibiotics that don't cost an arm and a leg. Being a small town with no 24 hour pharmacy we give the first dose of antibiotics and we also have small take home packs of pain killers, nausea medications, etc. until someone can get to a pharmacy the next day. We also score very high on our patient satisfaction scores. -- Now I may roll my eyes and snicker about you behind your back --- but there is no cause to be rude to a patient or family member.

If you qualify, I have friends who say the Vet hospital (which is fairly new) in NE Vegas is one of the best in the country.

had to bring my girl to Desert Springs hospital off of Flamingo, short ride behind ballys. she needed some stitches, took a few hours, they were pretty busy that day. done a good job, staff was very nice...first time I witnessed a hospital throw someone out though.

guy was loud moaning and cursing the staff out and telling them he was in extreme pain. they got security and warned him multiple times to stop cursing at them...on our way out the door, security was escorting him out the building

Have experience with Mountain View Hospital and Summerlin hospital where my adult son was treated for food poisoning 18 months ago and this past weekend. Both ERs were empty and quick in the early evening (Mountain View advertises it's ER wait on billboards). Both hospital's attending doctors were very thorough, nursing was great at both places, the facilities were spotless. He was admitted both times for IV re-hydration and antibiotics (to guard against intestinal infection). Inpatient attending nursing good in both hospitals with the edge going to Mountain View for better attention to alarms and timetables.

I'm living in the valley for 3 years now and I have to say the hospitals on the west side are pretty nice. We really haven't had to test the quality of the healthcare, thank goodness no one has been that in need.
