This topic applies to all gambling games. The human psyche is very interesting to me.

"Don't" players don't bother me at all... in fact, one of the joys of craps is arriving a table with a lot of dark-siders & hoping to make them switch sides when the dice come to you!
Here's a rhetorical question for all of those who are annoyed with Don't players:
Do you ever bet 'Any Craps' (or C&E) on the come-out? If so, then for that one roll, you are also a 'dark-sider'! ;)

My rule of thumb is: if I lose 1/2 of my buy-in, I will walk.

Just last weekend at Wildhorse I started with $100 and it started pretty shitty. My roll came up, I rolled a nine and put my last $20 on pass line odds. I hit nine right away and proceeded to hit three more points and a few numbers in between, ended up cashing out at $300. I don't believe a cold table is any predictor of success on the next roll. I used to try shifting to the Don't but never had much success and never had fun playing that way so I just buy in for what I'm prepared to lose and go for it.

In Vegas I might wait until I get to roll and then bounce to another table or casino, or play something else. At my local casino where I have to drive 40 minutes and only have a few hours to spend there, and they usually only have one or two tables open, I will stick around until my time at the Casino is up.

As for weathering a bad run at the table, in the past I used go fully to the "dark side" when the table is "cold", but usually just end up losing more as most tables are actually choppy in my anecdotal experience. These days, if on a "cold" or choppy table when I want to stick around for a while I will play $6 Don't and $6 each on the 6 and 8. If a shooter makes a point I will switch it to passline, 1x odds, and the 6/8, increasing my bet as the shooter continues.

I play the don't about as much as not. But, I do not throw the dice from the don't. Sometimes if I am on the don't and the dice come around to me, I'll throw the dice but I move to the pass and come.

Last night at one of my locals was the closest I had been to ever playing "the dark side".......table was back and forth until about 6 quick 7-outs...including me twice........instead I walked away in shame.....rough night!

Walking away from a table shouldn’t feel shameful, but it is a rough feeling no doubt. The only time to walk away in shame is when you lose it all and buy in for more only to lose that too!

I agree, I was just being overly dramatic. I never walk away with no chips in my hand.....I know how low to go!

Any night the chips leave the rack never to come back is a bad night. Those are the times I have to convince myself that if the chips always got pushed to my side of the table then I wouldn’t have a place to play! Then after a few fleeting seconds, I plan for my next session.

I always buy in at the amount I plan to lose, if I lose. For me, buying chips means I am willing to lose them — the time to make that decision is when I’m pulling out the wallet.

I’m in this boat too. I guess I understand why some buy in for more than they are willing to lose, but that just seems silly for myself to do it. I decide how much I’m willing to lose in a session and that’s my buyin.

I always say on a $5 table table you need $200 minimum to bare the highs and lows. If the table is still ice cold and you lose it all then time to move on.

I agree. All the gambling books talk about that terrible feeling when you get totally felted and advise a stop loss of 1/2 or 1/3 of session bankroll. This is so one does not suffer the total helplessness and despair of losing everything. It's good advice.

For me personally I can handle it. If I lose 100% of that sessions bankroll, so be it. Water under the bridge. I'm not going to deny it will hurt, but the decision to go balls to the walls was accepted when I walked up to the table. Go big or go home. I'm there to gamble.

I am cursed with the understanding that there is no such thing as a hot/cold table or a hot/cold shooter except in hindsight therefore it means nothing to me in terms of staying or going.

My only metric I need to hit is "am I having a good time" and there are numerous factors that influence that.

One of the best rolls I've ever been on was shot by some dorky 21 year old with a cringey type of inexperienced swagger who constantly sailed the dice off the table and made inappropriately late bets. My wife, who believes in cold tables and cold shooters was tugging on me to leave as this guy was getting passed the dice. Amazingly enough, he goes on to roll for an hour and a half and hit at least 13 points by my count and pound the hell out of my place bets

The bottom line is that that the "longest roll in history" is just as likely with the next shooter at your table as it was right before Patricia Demauro got her hands on the dice at the Borgata in 2009. It's better to use something reasonable to base your play on like the demeanor of the crew, the players, or just your general sense of having a good time.
