Las Vegas For the Cheap (Not Frugal) :)

Yup, when I went to Japan last year I bought a lot of stuff from the Daiso store (1 dollar store). I still have stuff that I bought when I visited Japan in 2014 that just fills up my house.

I have to probably rent a storage place since I can't get into my bedroom or den anymore. When my mom died we boxed everything up and now they reside in my den and bedroom. But I'm afraid that if I picked up a storage locker I still will fill up my house, I have to learn to throw things away.

 

Been there/done that with purging my parents' stuff. I fear what awaits when my wife's folks go (which I hope is a long time from now). Oh. My. Can you say Beanie Baby, Mattel, Barbie, Disneyana and rocks/gems collectors?!?

 

I have some serious hoarding issues. I can recall tendencies that I had before I ever left home.
in fact, just a few weeks ago, I said to Mom..."why didn't you get me help 40 years ago!"
could you imagine if we started a thread on that?
some scary tales could be told for sure.
I will stop now as not to hijack this one.

 

I visit Walmart and the 99¢ store every time I get to Vegas. I stock up my room with junk food, fruit and chocolate. I love the random products at the 99¢ store. It, also, strikes me as funny that for $5.95 I have the same in-room goodies that the $10,000 player has in his room courtesy of his/her host.

 

That La Tache we drank in the Mansion was actually Two-Buck Chuck?!?!?

one day, a couple of years ago, I was at the ABC store on Fremont. I noticed a host from one of the casinos frantically grabbing up snacks and treats to make a welcome basket.
that stuff would not impress me. well, except maybe for the dark chocolate covered macadamias.
I would rather they just take the money they would spend on that crap and give me cash or free play.

 

It impresses me. That's why I go to Walmart and the 99¢ store. I feel coddled in my room the rest of the trip...all for $5.95.

 

We do this too! The 99c store is like an Alladin's cave for us.

We visit Walmart only if we are staying at a condo, or if it's cold and we need to warm up. Love looking at all the stuff they sell, rarely buy anything.

 

I think it's a European thing. Every European seems to love them. Don't they have similar stores in Europe? A 1£ Store or a 1€ Store?

 

Took a cab once from the Cosmo to a rental joint a few miles down E.Flamingo to rent a car, rather than using the agency in the hotel. Saved me around $130 net (+$18 for cab) over a 6-day period. Dropped the rental off on the way to the airport, Enterprise dropped us and luggage off at LAS at no charge.
I have done a similar stunt several times in Europe or New Zealand, I never ever rent at airports for lengthy rentals (or in Vegas ON the Strip, for the matter). Saves a boatload.

This whole idea of buying water still seems a little foreign to me.

Not a problem. Not an argument. Just a life experience.

 

And yet if your family had been born in 1550 and 1523 [in europe], everyone would have been drinking ale or wine as water was terribly infected. So, you know. Times change ;-) [I don't buy water at home or during most US travel or European travel, but I travel a lot in developing countries, so yes, I buy water]

 

Certainly, you have a good point.

Buying water in countries with contaminated public water is a good idea!

Also, there are areas in the U.S. where the water is safe to drink, but it smells of sulfur or tastes bad.

So,yes, I’d buy bottled water in those situations.

 

On one of my best trips (first solo!) I grabbed a bottle of water for the flight back home from the Downtown Walgreens. Thankfully remembered to drain it before TSA and didn't lose it right then and there. It was an oddball, durable Aquafina bottle that I hadn't seen before and I wound up hanging onto this silly, normally throwaway item for years, cleaning and refilling and using it at work for a long time before eventually misplacing it. It turned out to be a touchstone to that great trip and would always bring a smile to my face when I used it. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Frankie's Tiki Room mug, but it would never hold the secret charm of that precious water bottle.

 

This might explain 2016, or what you now refer to as "The Year of Dysentery."

 

Yes we do. We have Poundland I’m the UK. It doesn’t have the variety of products that the 99c store does.

They also have €1 stores in Spain. They are quite interesting too.

I think frugal is "smart" as in not throwing your money away on stupidities that you could spend less on.

Why pay $12 to $15 per drink at the casino bar or $5 per bottle of water at the casino gift shop when you could get supplies and booze at Albertsons or any other supermaket. That's not cheap, it's smart unless you are rich and don't care.

 

Don't travel much huh? I guarantee you would not drink tap in a lot of other places. Flint, Michigan ring a bell? I'm sure there are many more examples. I live close to the border of Mexico and our tap comes from the Rio Grande River. I haven't had tap in over 35 years. It is "purified" and will not kill you, right away anyway.
