They wouldn’t pay a jackpot with a check

Why can't they then wire the money into your account?

I have never won a Jackpot that high so I unfortunately don't have any personal experience. But this is strange. I would assume that the casino should give people a check option at those amounts (i.e. over $5,000) or give an option to have it wired to a bank account. Maybe the slot attendant was just lazy.

 

180 $100s? That's a lot of counting in a darkish scene. Great opportunity for a crooked attendant to pocket one of them in all the excitement. Was there one attendant or two?

 

I have seen them bring out 400k in cash for a guy playing HL vp. Trust me they're not going to risk it for a couple hundreds. The eyes are watching. Always.

 

On my handpays they will ask you if you want it counted. It’s already been counted in the cage with large amounts 10k/5k already being banded or paper clipped. Sometimes they count it for me and other times they just hand it to me.

 

The answer is simple: It was a lazy slot attendant who thought they wouldn't get a tip if they went through the trouble of cutting her a check.

 

I always tip the attendants, and pretty sure I overtip, and ya know, if I asked for a check because it was that much and they refused, I would absolutely NOT tip and they just lost out big time.

A customer at Main Street Station got a dealt a royal flush and won $10,000. The casino gave him cash. He asked for a check, but the casino employee said he had to ask for a check before they counted out the $10,000 cash. He asked them why they didn't give him the option beforehand of cash or check and the casino employee said they're not allowed to ask that question. Weird, but thought you might know an answer?

 

My experience at CP, my only handpay in Vegas btw, was that I was paid about 12K in cash on a jackpot. I wasn't asked how I wanted it paid. When they finally came back to pay me, which seemed like an eternity, I was a little surprised that they started handing me cash. It was primarily in two bundles strapped together and marked with the total of each and then the rest was hand counted. At that point, I didn't want to prolong my being a sitting duck any longer by asking them to do anything differently, so I just took the money and ordered a Lyft and headed for the door! Being new bills and banded together, it didn't really feel like that much money at the time as it fit in my cargo shorts pockets. But, it does make one slightly paranoid. I wouldn't mind that feeling again, however!

 

This was my thought. If she had asked for 17500 in a check I'd bet it wouldnt have been an issue.

 

a tip from me would NOT be based on check / cash. it would be more based on the performance from the slot attendant. how friendly, nice, accommodating and so on. such as... asking me if I wanted check or cash.
telling me that I can't get a check is not going to win favor.

 

When I hit my 9k at the old Fitzgerald's, they asked if I wanted a check. I said yes, for 5k. I changed my mind after abit, and asked for 6k (don't ask me why I thought the extra thousand should be added). They never blinked an eye.....just went back and made it all happen. I was pretty generous with tips as I recall.

 

You see, these are just the sort of first-world problems I'd love to encounter.
But I can see where The Man would want you to take the cash...as you'd be more liberal with disposing of it, rather than cashing the check, incrementally, to get funds...or worse...NOT CASHING it and depositing in the bank back home! Thousands of dollars outta the cashiers cage and it's going to Darryl Wayne's Bank & Muffler Shop in Banner Elk, North Carolina. Aaarrggh!

 

On my handpays one slot attendant marked it but two people arrived with the cash. If the attendant was being a jerk I would have reiterated my request for a check for at least a portion in front of the suit.

I hit $5K once on a Willie Wonka (got a golden ticket) at Cromwell and they asked how I wanted it. I took part in cash and part in check (so less than 5K check) and they didn’t balk at all.

For anyone worried about getting a large cash hand pay, you can request that security escort you up to your room. If you are not staying on property they can escort you to the taxi line etc. On my trip last month I won $3,000 at the Cromwell and it didn't even occur to me to ask for a check, but I'm not sure I would have wanted to sit there for a long time while it was being generated. For a larger amount I probably would have.

As for carrying a SS card around, there is no need in Vegas. I have only heard of people being asked for a physical card at the tribal casinos, which seems really stupid to me. Why can't they check in the same SS database that every other casino operating in the United States can access? Vegas will never ask you for the physical SS card, only the number, which they will verify in the database if it is your first time being paid. If you have had a hand pay at a CET or MLife casino before, they don't even ask you for your SS number because you are in the system. They will only ask for your ID and players card (this happened with my recent Cromwell win, as I have had hand pays at other CET casinos - they already had it on file).

 

What is really annoying is that the social security card (unlike a Driver's license or a passport) is NOT considered to be a physical ID. It does not have anti forgery safeguards that passports and most drivers licenses contain and therefore it is not REAL-ID compliant. This is according to the social security office themselves.

The SSA office themselves recommend employers and others just ask for a number and run it thought the database. I suspect that tribal casinos are just trying to get out of paying a jackpot (like out of state visitors who don't have the card may not fly back just to collect a smaller jackpot). Another reason I never gamble at smaller tribal casinos.

However, I suspect some of the larger and more legitimate ones (Harrah's Cherokee, mohegan, foxwoods) probably wont create such a fuss. Has anyone had any experience with them?

 

Ditto for me. I hit $20k on a WoF at Planet Hollywood a couple of years ago. Asked for $3k in cash and a $17k check. Took about 30 minutes at 3:30 in the morning, but I got it.

 

Gotten many handpays at Foxwoods, up to 8k, and never needed anything but a drivers license.
