+1 on Vancouver, and add the triple play special with Victoria and Whistler.

If you're not looking for domestic destinations, I'll let you know when I come back from Malaysia/Macau in 3 weeks.

Macau has Western Style casinos that DWARF Venetian/Palazzo. Resorts World Genting has the Worlds Largest hotel, over 7,000 rooms at the First World Hotel.

The only things that these places DON'T have in comparison to Las Vegas is Western style entertainment.

    Outer banks NC

Not quite as quaint as it once was but outstanding seafood, great fishing, decent golf courses, a few historical parks and don’t forget about wild horses on the beach.

This won't surprise anyone ... Bend, Oregon

    1. It works for every season.
    2. The place is thick in craft beer makers.
    3. It's a high desert with a mountain range backing it and a river running through it.
    4. Weather is perfectly seasonally apt.
    5. The food scene is coming on.
    6. It's a vibrant town filled with vibrant, active people, regardless age.
    7. Easily road accessible for we West Edgers and RDM has good hub service.
    8. Outoor recreation Mecca (with none of the Rodeo Drive angst of an Aspen or Park City): Alpine and nordic. Road, lift-served downhill and XC biking. Fishing. Kayak, canoe, raft. Hiking. Casual sightseeing. Mountain climbing. Golf. Exploded volcanos and lava caves. Waterfalls and roaring rapids. Lakes and reservoirs. High Desert Museum.

    And did I mention BEER??????

I think maybe I do too. :) Are we talking foreign/domestic, urban/rural, road trip/city tour. I have many different travel moods. ;)

This was my experience the one time I went to the Keys. It sure was beautiful (especially those sunsets), but that drive was kind of a nightmare. And twice, two separate people just stopped right in the middle of the road. Just stopped. o_O Try that on PCH and someone will push you off the road and over a cliff. ;)

I'm a big fan of domestic road trips. Lots of great Americana out there to explore if you take the time. When I was in Jr High, my best friend and I had a plan that as soon as we graduated High School, we would get on our motorcycles (ha!!) and hit the road for a year. Our plan was to visit all of the National Parks. Never happened, but back in the 90's, my fiance and I had a map of the US on the wall in our apartment covered in pins and routes mapped out to do that trip in an RV. (A little more practical than the motorcycle for my tastes. :) ) Years passed and I still have hopes that someday I will make that trip happen. But the odds are getting slimmer as I get older. :( Now I'm looking at breaking it into sections and trying to do it in segments. I've got some routes that look fun for a Civil War tour, Badlands, and Maine.

I also have a route up through BC to Alaska that gives me goosebumps. It's a long trip, but it would be amazing if we could make that happen. A road trip for the ages, I guess.

So far my favorite road trip I've ever taken was when I took 8 days to come home from Southern California (started in Santa Barbara) and drove all the way up to Westport, WA along the coast. I took every single western turn off and stop I could find. Discovered some amazing spots. I ran into a woman in a Cannon Beach, OR wine tasting room last week who was doing the drive from Vancouver, BC. We had a great discussion about all the places she needs to stop and see, along with places to camp on the way down. I'll admit that it gave me the itch to plan to do it again, soon!

Oddly, I was just looking at booking a little road trip to see 3 of my last 7 US States. Was thinking Salt Lake City up to Boise, ID and then on to Bend, OR before winding up at my son's place in SF. Looks like my thinking was right on!

A mini hike through the Sierras. Pick any easier trek with not a lot of elevation gain. Some of the best scenery the US has to offer is off the beaten path and in the backcountry. one year we did a Yosemite - Mammoth hike, and that part of the Sierras sure is be-yoo-te-full

We have a 30' fifth wheel and have traveled all over the Eastern seaboard of NA and have been all through Canada. We love taking road trips and just seeing what is out there. The Keys have been brought up a few times and we LOVED the Keys but you totally have to time that drive. It can be insane.

We found a nice campsite just outside Boston a few years back and had a very enjoyable trip exploring the area. Salem was fun, Gloucester, Cape Cod. Given that we both grew up on the ocean it was a wonderful trip.

We also have camped all over NY State/PA/WV etc and the scenery is just outstanding. We've also had great times along the Jersey shore (yup) places like Long Beach Island just after the crowds leave the week after Labor Day.

Traveling on the left coast is also fantastic. Drive the Coquihalla highway, Victoria BC is beautiful (when it isn't raining that is).

North America is as diverse as the people that inhabit it. So much to see and do.

there is a good hike in the Sequoias called the Rae Lakes Loop. You can also see the General Sherman tree while you are there. ( Largest Sequoia ). Ken, this is really close to you, so this could be a mini-getaway. Also, bear country. We ran into or saw 3 different bears during our hike through there

    Best laid plans....

When I lived in Key West, some friends and I had a plan to hit 30 different bars in one weekend. And the rule was, that we had to drink at least one beer in each bar. Never happened.

I think we made it to three. :kill:

You don't have YNP-MM on your easier list, do you? You're an animal.

One thing flatlanders need to know about the Sierra -- like the Rockies -- is that many of the portals are HIGH, higher than the highest peak in Appalachia.

Everyone is naming the same old stuff. Book a flight to South Africa or Kenya and go on a safari. Then you can call yourself a world traveler.

I've been on safari in Zimbabwe and in Tanzania. I've stayed in yurts in Krgyzstan. Explored "medieval" settlements in the middle of China. That's I asked for parameters. I prefer international travel - always have. And I hate road trips. Those are my personal preferences. Also why I hate recommending vacations for other people without parameters ;-)

Also, I'm a Universal fan, not Disney ;-)
