Pre-Trip Notes - March Madness 2019 Version (long)

Well it's time for another Vegas trip, so once again it is time to publish my voluminous Pre-Trip notes. Each trip, once it has been booked, I start catching up with message boards, blogs, etc and compile a casino-by-casino list of promotions, new (to me) info and just cool stuff.

I am a coupon user and promo chaser, mainly playing red chip blackjack and quarter video poker. I get an American Casino Guide each year, and usually rent a car to casino hop. I used to go 3 - 4 times a year, now it's one or two. This will be a solo trip.

This trip will be a bit different, as for the first time in several years I will be staying at all downtown hotels. This is actually my preference, as I do like to drink while gambling, and normally have to wait until I park for the night to get my buzz on. Not this trip! I will be paying probably $100 more total in hotel costs than I would using alternate offers, but I will be foregoing the car this time around which saves $150 - $200 or so. Even though it's March Madness week, I got a reduced offer from Cal/MSS for the first time in years - Wed - Sat 35/35/75/75 plus resort fees. I chose the Cal, and it will be my first ever stay there. I will then be doing a BOGO at the D Sun & Mon for $45 plus RF. I'm hoping for no rain, as the bus will be my chariot of choice.

I love going the first week of March Madness, and expect to spend my usual time at the Boar Bar in MSS. However, due to the players club change at Boyd, along with the downgrade in VP at El Cortez, I expect to be spending a lot more time at the Four Queens playing VP than I have in recent years. Maybe I can scare up some offers from them again.

And once again it looks like I will not make it to Hendertucky.

I have over $300 in matchplays, and over $50 in freeplay/slot matchplay to play with over the trip. I'm ready and rarin' to go.

So here we go to the notes - they are listed geographically starting with downtown, then Strip, then off-Strip. Hopefully some of you heading out this month will be able to take advantage of something you see here.

There’s a new way to get around downtown Las Vegas, and it’s free. The service runs daily with seven stops in downtown Las Vegas. Bonneville Transit Center, The Arts District, Pawn Plaza, Fremont East (on Las Vegas Boulevard, south of Fremont Street), the Mob Museum, Fremont Street Experience (Main Street, south of Fremont) and Las Vegas North Premium Outlets. The free shuttle runs from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sundays. The 19-passenger buses hit their stops about every 20 minutes.

The Las Vegas North Premium Outlets mall will begin charging $5 for parking on March 27, 2018.

Golden Nugget - The eight or so 8/5 quarter VP machines are now 7/5. A new nightlife offering has opened at downtown’s Golden Nugget casino, Troy Liquor Bar. The new nightclub and bar replaces Gold Diggers on the resort’s second floor.

Kudos to Binion’s for installing phone charging jacks at every single chair at every one of its casino table games. The Binions mailer I got for this quarter had an extra $10 in slot play if I showed them I had the app installed. The portions are HUGE, but it was tasty and hit the spot. You could easily feed 2 people with the portion size, seriously. At Fremont, they used to have free watch parties, but this year they decided to charge. But if you have a players card, sapphire or better, they will let you in. Axe Hole, a new offering at Neonopolis in downtown Las Vegas, provides guests the chance to test their mettle by tossing axes, knives, spears, throwing stars and other sharp objects at targets.

We split an order of the Burger Nachos at Nacho Daddy. Amazing. And huge - plenty of food to feed two lunch.

Happy hour is made happier when there’s pizza, so from 3-6 p.m. weekdays and from 10 p.m. till close daily, Pizza Rock makes your night with individually sized pies for $7. The best Caesar salad I have ever tasted. The dressing is so garlic filled and full of flavor it’s just incredible. Closes at 11:30 during the week.

On its first official day of service downtown, an autonomous shuttle had a close encounter with a delivery truck and the incident went viral. The shuttle is expected to continue its one-year pilot program as planned. It’s free and stops at three stops. Fremont Street Experience at Las Vegas Blvd. and Fremont St. The corner of 7th and Carson St. The Donut Bar at 6th and Carson St. The shuttle is scheduled to run between 11 am – 6 pm daily.

The Bomb Taco downtown is a block off Fremont Street, on Carson Avenue. It’s 616 E. Carson Ave - it has now closed.

The Goodwich’s fried egg sammie ($4) has just four ingredients: choice of bread (marble rye, please) that is buttered, salted and griddled to shore up the fried egg, which is served by default with a silky broken yolk but can also come with a firmer center by request. Now, here’s your opportunity to get creative and remain within budget. A popular, old-timey horse racing slot machine called Sigma Derby has finally been put down for good at MGM Grand. Pub 1842 in MGM has an awesome happy hour, Thurs thru Sunday 2pm-5pm. Brisket sliders and Lobster mac n cheese are delicious-think the sliders are $8 and mac is $9 during happy hour. I think the beer is $5 and cocktails $7. 2-4-1 CSI tickets. (ACG)

At The Park by T-Mobile on Tuesday and Wednesday they have music at 5p, so checked that out. A good mellow band to listen to for awhile. Drew a modest crowd.

Park MGM - The sports book is lovely and has Bonus, DDB (8/5 quarters and 9/5 dollars!), and TDB STP, but one big strike against them. They won't comp any of their ample craft beer selection!

Caesars Entertainment, which operates nine Sin City resorts, has rolled out its “Red Light, Green Light” (our term, not theirs) comp drink monitoring system to all its Las Vegas casinos. The color-coded light system, installed on the back of video poker machines at casino and sports book bars, tells bartenders when a guest’s play warrants a free, or “comped,” drink. The other major casino company in Las Vegas to institute paid parking was Caesars Entertainment, in early 2017. Total Rewards players club is changing its name to Caesars Rewards. You’ll be able to pick up your new Caesars Rewards card beginning February 1 at any Caesars Rewards Center.

Planet Hollywood - Miracle mile also had a place right by Pampas offering anything on their lunch menu for 4.99, and it was a decent looking sit-down place with good menu items (Ocean One). A fixture at Planet Hollywood, Pink’s Hot Dogs, has closed. 2-4-1 drink and free appetizer with 2 entrees purchased at PBR Rock Bar, 2-for-1 tickets for any show at V-Theater or Saxe Theater. (ACG)

Cosmopolitan - If you are an all day coffee drinker you can buy a cup at VaBene in the morning and get free refills all day, just keep your cup and receipt. Chandelier Bar to try the Verbena, the bartender walked us through the whole thing. It was quite a unique experience. I'm not sure the flavor really changed for me after chewing on the flower anymore than having some lemon zest in my mouth would have, but the tingling was really neat. The drink was great on its own without the flower. The waitress told us we could just buy one addition buzz button flower instead of another whole drink. Perfect! The Verbena itself was $16-something and the extra buzz button was $2.16, not compable. If you haven't heard about this new place Magic Donkey, it's a bar, but there's no sign, no map, no hints. It's like Secret Pizza on steroids. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has unveiled its upgraded and relocated Race & Sports Book, which is powered by CG Technology. More than twice the size of the original, the new book features state-of-the-art LED video walls screens; multiple hi def TVs; lounge seating; private VIP viewing areas; mobile wagering; and betting windows. There's also a new adjacent 24-hour sports bar has also opened, featuring shuffleboard, foosball, billiards, and bar food, and a new sports-themed table games area, offering blackjack and roulette. Cosmopolitan began its paid parking program in June 2017. If you refuse to go #2 in public restrooms but don't want to get a room then you can use the private one in the downstairs Cosmo high limit table room. Just walk fast and don't make eye contact with anyone before locking yourself in the bathroom. Playboy Bonus BJ machine pays 3:2 and offers surrender, $15 min (?). 21 Gambler $1 slot machine (right of players club?). Hexx creamery outside Paris. Best people watching place in LV. Get yourself an ice cream and sit outside on their elevated patio. Right across the street from the Bellagio fountains. Bellagio - There was 3:2 S17 for $10 on Saturday and throughout the weekend, between the Petrossian Bar and the Craps pit. Hyde Bellagio is one of the most energetic, intimate nightclubs in the city, but only after 10 p.m. When it opens at 5, it’s a relaxing indoor-outdoor lounge with no cover, craft cocktails, half-price bottles and glasses of wine on Wednesdays, and nifty views of both the fountain shows and the tourists on the other side of the lake who don’t have it quite as good as you right now. HYDE BELLAGIO hooking you up with free admission!!! Just show the group on your phone and get in free... There’s a fun new diversion on the Las Vegas Strip: “The Twilight Zone” mini golf has opened at Bally’s Las Vegas, 18 holes for just $11.95. Also in the venue are several lanes of miniature bowling. Again, great value. Five frames of bowling costs $3, 10 frames are just $5. Wahlburgers restaurant has finally opened at the Grand Bazaar Shops outside Bally’s Las Vegas. In front of Ballys at the Shoppes was a real good band that played Friday and Saturday nites. The bar at Bally's outside of the poker room gives free drinks to Diamond card holders whether you play or not. 2-4-1 Twilight Zone mini golf, 2-4-1 tickets X Rocks, 20% off Spa. (ACG)

Caesars Palace - I found a gallery there that had some interesting things in it. The sculptures are all made from recycled parts and they let you take pictures as well.

Westin Las Vegas, known to many by its former name, Westin Casuarina, closed its small casino in favor of a new restaurant.

Cromwell has recently launched a slew of player-friendly games in the 40,000 square-foot casino. From single “0” roulette to EZ Baccarat to 100X odds on Craps to 3-2 shoe and double-deck blackjack, new sports book. I don't think a ton of people have discovered their new book yet, and even though it's small it's super comfortable and the screens are amazing. Cromwell has their normal $25 DD 3:2 game and $15 3:2 shoe games. The Cromwell unveiled a new snack bar, Eatwell.

Flamingo’s 5¢ beer deal in the Margaritaville Casino area’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere bar that runs daily from 5 to 6 pm. Margaritaville had $5 bj 3/2 but full. The food court when we were there they had tray liners with coupons for buy one and 50 percent off on some entrees, or sandwiches. Mac King promo $14.98 tickets (after all fees) that include a drink are still being handed out at the Total Rewards booth. 2-4-1 Who's To Blame margarita at Margaritaville, $10 off $50 at Uno Salon. The Auto Collections at Linq Resort (formerly Imperial Palace) closed on Dec. 30, 2017, after 36 years. Didn't realize the Linq promenade had a fountain and light show at night. Right in front of IN and OUT Burgers. They are linked to music. Not sure of the times they take place. The cool thing is the music is also linked to the lights on the High Roller. Very cool.

Mirage - “The Beatles Love” is no longer offering open rehearsals. They’ve been replaced with a “Magical Technical Tour,” an open house presentation showcasing the production’s technology. The events take place every Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. It’s free and open to the public. 21 Gambler $10X2 slot machine (high limit room?). The Mirage/Treasure Island Tram is up and running again. The renovations are complete!

Casino Royale - Lose $20, get $20 back in free slot play coupon (internet - new players only?). Slot and video poker players can get daily rebates of $20 in free slot play for every $100 in losses. Casino Royale raised their beer prices to $3. ATM fee is now $3.

The Venetian also has the new Sigma Derby-type electronic horse racing game from Konami, Fortune Cup. Grand Canal Shoppes to see if I can find The Void as I heard about The Void only two days prior and I was going to check out their Hyper Reality Star Wars show, in St. Mark's Square on the side closest to the canal bridges, $32.95 weekdays, 10 AM - 11 PM. Wow! That was awesome! I had a burger at San Genaro in the Venetian Food Court Casino a couple of weeks ago. TI - You no longer have to scramble to the nearest Comic Con to get up close and personal with your favorite superheroes. Marvel’s Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. (Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network) is the Strip’s newest superhero attraction. Mystere, every Monday afternoon at 4pm has open rehearsals. I visit Treasure Island to play blackjack. They promote the casino as having great 3:2 blackjack and they deliver. Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, will begin charging for parking on Aug. 7, 2017. Starting July 1 2018 parking is included for hotel guests in the resort fee. Non-hotel guests will also be able to park free, albeit with validation. Guests will be validated upon receipt of a $50 spend at Wynn or Encore. That minimum can be spent at all the retail stores, restaurants, shows, nightclubs and lounges at either of the resorts. The poker desk has been giving away free parking just for asking, even to people who haven’t sat down in a poker game.

Luke’s Lobster recently opened its first location west of the Mississippi River. The outdoor eatery along Las Vegas Boulevard serves the grab-and-go food that founders Luke Holden and Ben Conniff introduced in 2009 in Manhattan’s East Village. Their newest location is in a new pedestrian plaza beside the Fashion Show mall, just steps from the Strip. Given its focus, the menu is a short one. It includes shrimp rolls ($10), crab rolls ($14) and lobster rolls ($18) along with such sides as New England clam chowder ($9) and Jonah crab claws (four for $8). Everything is made using fresh seafood. If you opt not to grab and go, you can stay and eat in a seating area that can handle about a dozen people.

Years ago, I used to keep a similar but more summarized list like this. With all that info, it is a challenge to keep it updated. I have a couple of updates and comments.

I believe this ended probably close to 2 years ago now. Was there about a month ago, and there was no new appetizer HH promo.

I'd update the 9/6 info to say 2 machines, rather than several.

Wow that is some list! Brief cheapo pro tip on south strip - Nathan’s in Luxor serves breakfast, and the pancakes are made to order and huge. Good use of the b1g1 coupon. Also, if you wander across the bridge from Excalibur to nyny, the Haagen daaz place is right there and rarely busy. B1g1 free milkshakes without an annoying detour!

Just seeking clarification. You mentioned the Mirage to TI tram being running again. Does that mean the lengthy repair after it was open for a short while after renovations are completed or did you not know about it being down again?

 

FYI...about a year ago CET closed the 5 o'clock somewhere bar....now it has been renamed & the beers are $.50...
