Pizza sucks in the DMV. That is all.

Eh, I just mean that papa murphy's does nothing for me over a $6 pizza from the supermarket that I can have in my freezer at all times. If I'm going to leave the house for pizza, I'll get the real thing.

But you did say you can't cook a pizza at home sans the pizza oven.

I get that not a lot of us have a domed, ash brick-straight-from-Vesuvius oven with coal or whatever firing a pizza in 95 seconds. If we then say w/o it you don't have pizza, well, none of us are doing that rib steak in the "proper" fashion either. But I'd say a lot of us can fire a good pizza or strip loin at the casa.

In the city, we have the odd place here and there, like 2Amys or Seventh Hill that are decent. I know nothing of suburban pizza, but overall I'd hazard a guess that you're pretty much right on about this.

The argument of the best pizza is an argument no one can win. If you like it, call it your favorite (best). I'm in Chicago's southwest burbs. Yeh, a pizza snob. Last night my favorite was Lou Malnati's deep dish, last week it was Beggars thin crust, the previous week it was Giardano's, before that it was Durbins and Home Run Inn. I also like Pizano's, Uno & Duo, Gino's East, Louisa's, & Vito & Nicks. They're all good or great. I live in an area that Aurileo's, my son's fave, is very popular. I won't buy it but It's one of the better thin crusts and we all have different tastes. Some pizzas are regular thin crusts and some are Chicago style and some are stuffed. Our choice of pizza is who's eating it and what they have a taste for. We like them all. For all the pizza lovers outside of Chicago, 75% ? of Chicago pizza is thin crust, cut in squares, not the deep dish touted on football and baseball games when Chicago is featured. In Vegas try the thin crust cheese, sausage, onion, mushroom & bell pepper at Giardano's not the stuffed. Please don't judge Chicago style pizzas by eating a frozen one with the name. Frozen shouldn't even have the same names. Not good. Time for last nights leftover Malnati's.

OMG! I work in Detroit living in Windsor and find Detroit style pizza inedible. Except for the caramelized cheese all around there are zero redeeming qualities of that loaf of bread pizza!

We owned a couple pizza parlors for the first 20 years of my career, so I feel well-versed in the subject. There's a good mix in our area, better if we're down in Reno. I've come to enjoy pretty much all pizza, but now absolutely prefer thin crust, right out of the oven so it burns the roof of my mouth, thin slices, quality Italian-sausage only (cooked on the pie, not pre-cooked) and some freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano on top. I've even graduated to add an anchovy or two as well. I prefer a blend of whole milk mozzarella and part skim (all whole milk turns into a puddle of goo and the part-skim browns better) with a little provolone and some colby for color.

That's what I like... the family is all over the map depending on where we are, so I usually get mine all to myself!

I haven't had it fresh in Chicago, but Home Run Inn makes one of the best frozen pizzas I've ever had.

This looks good but I like when the cheese gets closer to the crust. There's too much of a puddle of sauce up there for my taste.

In NJ it’s mandatory. My wife of course uses a knife and fork, and she’s born and raised in NJ.

    https://beltmag.com/cheese-please-how-did-pizza-become-one-of-windsor-ontarios-hottest-exports/

I have tried pizza everywhere in the world as I travel to many many places for my job and I prefer my home town fare. Ever try Flammekuchin in Germany, crazy good but not as good ;).

Our Italian population is very large in Windsor, we support a few very large old-country Italians clubs, Caboto (Rome to Naples), Fogolar (Friuli Region - North), Ciaciaro (Rome), etc. that keep the culture front and centre. Not NY/NJ Guido but countryside family Italian.

Maybe I am biased because pizza is like music, your style is encoded into your psyche during your teens.

Windsor Style Pizza is thin crust, shredded pepperoni. Pure milk cheese on top of the toppings cooked on a screen or corn meal. I prefer screen-baked but lately we have be using a corn meal joint.

Cheese is a big deal. Dairy in Canada is different. Our average grocery store cheese is better than than Cheese in most US states because corners are not cut by-law. One of the great benefits of socialism, :D is control when control is done right and for the people. Kraft cheese in Canada is not Kraft cheese in the US.

Pan pizzas from Bellesario's or Luciano's in my neighborhood. Both are fantastic!

I am not attached to a single style. Do whatever you do as well as it can be done. Pizza is by nature appealing, from gourmet wood fired right down to a 2-buck slice at Costco. Akron had Luigi's, with its thick, crispy crust, and Barberton had Angie's, which was similar. I have found nothing exceptional here. Friends here prefer Papa Murphy's, which I find unappetizing. Shitty crust to start, and the sauce and toppings get soggy while you drive home and heat the oven. And 375 degrees? Get serious.

I see that pjbear05 is a Detroiter. A former friend is a native and always ranted about Buddy's. The curious may wish to view the October 20, 2018 "Cook's Country" show, which shows how to recreate Buddy's pizza at home, or at least come pretty close. They showed one of the legendary scrap metal pans.

I agree with Ken that homemade pizza can be very good if you do it well. I use the bread machine to mix up a crust of my own creation.

Every time I go back to Philly, a decent pizza is second on my list after a cheese steak.

As Bshowell said, south of Baltimore, there is no decent pizza.

This is from a little place in Harrison, NJ called Gina’s. Extra large slices, each one about 18” long, from my elbow to the tip of my pinkie. As long as a plastic cafeteria tray. Folding is not optional.

I brought a colleague from Cincinnati here and about 12 years ago and he still talks about the pizza when I see him.

I remember the first time I went to Chicago and one in my group said lets get some pizza. When the deep dish pizza arrived at the table which I had never seen before. My comment was and still is "that's not pizza that's a tomato pie",

Aside from the chains, Villa Rose, a nondescript Italian restaurant near me has people claiming it's the oldest pizzeria in Broward County, FL. The make and excellent Chicago thin style pizza, with chunks of Italian sausage covering. Good pasta dishes and hot subs, too.
