Had nearly all of the conversations the OP has had over the years. Some of my own...

Other: Have you been away this year?
    Me: Yes
    Other: Where did you go
Me (inside voice): Mind your own business.
    Me (actual response): Las Vegas
    Other: Did you win?
    Me: No.
Other: How much did you lose?
Me (inside voice): I’d really rather not discuss my personal finances with you.
    Me (actual response): About $1500.
Other: How can YOU afford that?
Me (inside voice): I might be half your age but I probably make twice as much (probably actually don’t but like to think I do!!).
Me (actual response): Well really you can get very cheap flights, and if you play in the hotels you get to stay in the hotels and eat for free so it’s not that different from what somebody would spend on an all inclusive beach holiday - and I really don’t like sand.
Other: but isn’t it in the middle of the desert??!!

I guess everyone I know is simply messed up like folks here 'cause I don't recall ever having one of these conversations relative to Vegas.

Sometimes some people will say "Wow...you're going to Vegas? Again??!! You must have a LOT of money...."

To which I say, much to their chagrin: "Yes. I do."

I must say I do this ONLY to those people who have been habitually hurtful and hateful to me when I go to Vegas. They are obnoxious and are obviously trying to make me feel bad about it (I don't).

Hard to explain, but there are people who would say the above statement with no malice or judgement, they are just unaware of how fun and sensible a Vegas vacation can be if done right. When I share Vegas with them and how it can be fun and affordable they nod in acknowledgement whether they agree or not. It's called respect.

Then there are the others who are either jealous or feeling sorry for themselves and the predicament they created for themselves. More times than not these people are the lazy ones with an entitlement complex, the "woe about me" types. Some of them are my family members.

I love sticking it to them.

I don't get the snide comments, mainly jealousy. I go solo pretty often, at the encouragement of my amazing wife. Some of the guys I know say "tell me next time" but there's really zero percent chance they can go or will be allowed to go (and they know it), especially on short notice (I live in SD and can drive).

Some of the ladies we know wonder what I'm doing out there, that it's potentially coke and whores. People don't get it when I say I gamble, sit at the pool, walk, drink a little, watch sports. I spend a lot of time with my kids, which is awesome, but just need to get away. For many people I talk to they REALLY cannot imagine Vegas solo. They need a constant partner or guide I guess. That's the biggest comment I get "what do you DO out there!?"

Actually, my wife is - to this day - puzzled about my solo-trips...she just cannot imagine that I'd have fun being out there alone.
I've tried to explain it to her, & I always extend an invitation to her to come along, but she always declines & she still finds it "sad"... I then re-assure her that "sad" is never a factor for me while I'm out there - that I always have fun... as for the "whores & blow" issue? She no longer worries about that sort of stuff, given my age, my unwillingness to risk my marriage, and my unwillingness to put my job at risk (we have random drug testing where I work).
She does know that I'm a bit of a flirt - even at 61 - but she also knows that I'm actually harmless.

We're regular church goers and take part in a lot of Christian group activity things, a few which are inter-denominational so we get to interact with people from many other churches. Most people from our church are very okay with us going to Vegas. They may ask questions because they've never been or haven't been in a long time and they genuinely want to know what we do while in Vegas or what kind of things Vegas has to offer. However, people from other churches....

Them: Oh, you're going away? Where ya'headed?
    Me: Vegas
    Them: ..... oh..... Sin City....
Them: .... oh, look, there's Dave and Cathy, I haven't seen them in a while, I must go say hi.

I can totally see the judging thoughts going on in their heads and the fake desperate attempt to break off conversation with me.

Speaking of judging, once a person asked where I was going and when I said Vegas, here is how the rest of that quick conversation went:

    Her: Oh... judging
Me: Judge not, lest ye be judged!

She blushed said "Enjoy" and looked away.

No matter where I vacation, it's always a gambling destination...

    Vegas, Biloxi, AC.

What I hear most often is "Must be nice to not have kids!!!"

I don't think I've really had too many annoying conversations about Vegas with anybody TBH. Everyone that knows me knows I go at least twice a year, they may tease me jokingly about it and that's about as far as it goes. I have no embarrassment about it, I love Vegas. If they don't "get it" or if they have their own negative opinions about it, cool for them. I don't have a need to defend how I feel or what I like.

What other people think regarding what I like, what I do, or how I spend my money doesn't affect me. If they ask me something I tell them. If they think it's weird or crazy or expensive it really has zero effect on me. They are entitled to their opinion and can feel however they want to feel about anything.

On the other hand I also don't try to convince them that they should feel any differently about it then they do. That's the LVCVA's job lol

In conversations with “non Vegas people”, I’ve long since given up trying to explain what everyone here knows: that Las Vegas is a travel bargain relative to almost any major city or resort destination in the world, no matter whether you are a bargain or luxury traveler. I have no need to share the joy we share here with a non Vegas person.

Thinking of @topcard with a smile here:

Them: You must spend a lot of money there. Don’t you gamble too?

Me (inner voice): Why would that be any of your f’ing business? Our last trip to Las Vegas, with first class air travel (miles upgrade), limos (house car), big suite (up front and back end discounts), net gambling (loss, but a pretty small loss), great food, and everything else, cost me a net total of about $4K for a full seven day week. We could have done it for about $2K if we’d flown coach (miles) and stayed in a standard resort room. Our last trip to Hawaii cost $15K and our room wasn’t as nice and the food wasn’t as good. I don’t like sand. For us, Vegas is cheap and we’re treated like royalty. You dumb shit-you have no idea what a good deal Vegas is, at any level of travel.

Me (actual answer): Las Vegas is actually a travel bargain, and we don’t gamble much.

    Them: It must be nice.

Me (inner voice): Yes, it is nice. We’re pretty old now. We worked our asses off most of our lives to be what the charts say constitutes “one per centers.” ( according to MSNBC when we looked it up in response to Mrs. Johnny’s question, “Are we one percenters? We’re the people they want to tax?) We’ve saved a lot. We live on less than 20% of what we make and save or give away the rest. We’re frugal compared to our means, but within reason we can do pretty much whatever we want-our wants are not stupid. Our wants include Vegas. Always Vegas. If you both had graduate degrees and had worked as incredibly hard as we did it would be nice for you too. And, we’re lucky. You don’t seem lucky. Are you lucky? Do you feel lucky?

Me (actual answer): We’re careful not to do anything we can’t afford.

Sigh. I’m guessing many of us, except for @ken2v, have had some variant of a conversation like this, except maybe without my Bart Simpson inner voice. I am a cranky old man who has given up being kind and engaging with responses like, “Oh? Why do you hate it?” Or “I’m surprised you think that. Las Vegas is really a bargain and terrific fun whatever your budget. It’s really hard to think of anything you can’t do there. Would you like us to help you plan a memorable visit?”

I prefer to be here because I know you understand my life long love for Las Vegas.

Who has heard this one before..."I work too hard for my money to lose it gambling"

    Actual conversation with a co-worker.
Her: "you're going to Vegas again? Vegas is just so seedy and gross"
Me: (laughing) "I think it's great that one of the reasons I love the place is exactly why you dislike it"

You must be VERY lucky haha. My lowly upfront comp is simply a resort room with some freeplay at the Encore and I've netted out negative $11k before food and drink for a total of 8 nights (over the past two years). It's 90% slots, which might be my issue. But, if you include food and beverage, it's closer to $14k (I don't even get back-end food comps). Granted, I play what I'm willing to lose, but I definitely don't "win" in Vegas relative to other destinations. That said, the equivalent room in Aruba would be $1k a night at the Ritz Carlton (before food!). I'd rather try my luck in Vegas than go for that.

    lol

Oh, you can drop that kind of coin going high season and eating and playing in house the whole time at a Four Seasons Hualalai or Lanai. We like our tastes of such places but VRBO is our go-to and we've had some stunning places for relatively minimal coin.

Ken has it. Ocean front, Hualalai and Ocean Front, Four Seasons Lanai.

Reason I should never get into these discussions. You spend your money any way you want and I’ll spend mine. My mistake for opening the door for you to make it your business instead of mine.

If you knew luxury resorts in high season in Hawaii and airfares from Dallas, you’d know it’s easy to spend WAY more than that. Much more. Easily. Reason we go to Vegas.

Look up ocean fronts at luxury hotels on the Big Island, Maui and Lanai and you’ll understand immediately. There are a lot of ways to go to either Vegas or Hawaii. We go at near the top end so other people can gloat that they can do it cheaper.

Nine days, first class airfare. You’d have thought it was pretty posh had you been with us. Oh, wait, you were camping. We don’t camp.

We stayed at the Westin on Kauai (couldn't quite swing the St. Regis) and Maui (Lahaina), and that place is expensive. Thanksgiving week for the Maui Classic, so airfare would have been absurd but for the 220k miles we'd saved up over a number of years to fly (coach!). $14k or $15k could have been WELL within reach without the free airfare. Still worth it!

Some of you mentioned the solo trips ... I get that response a lot, being a middle aged married woman. People always ask, you go to Vegas alone? Doesn't your husband mind, or worry, or whatever their comment may be. And then I get that look! Like, what are you realllllly doing out there. Ugh!

It's amazing. I always wonder what dark and guilty secrets people who ask such questions must harbor inside. It's a junior high-level of trust and self-respect.
