I'd also add, thinking you are going on a diet is the wrong way. Yes, you gotta make changes, but you really need to focus on finding sustainable behaviors that can last. Diets fail. That's my challenge with things like Nutrisystem or Paleo...unless you're really going to do this forever, how do you sustain it?

What worked for me was finding the things I could continue. Eat fruit for breakfast instead of a granola bar. Cut out some lunch places and find healthy orders I can eat when I don't bring homemade food. Get snacks and shit out of the house that you'll be tempted by. Meal prep. Find your cheats that keep you happy but aren't horrendous (i.e. getting 4 basic taco bell tacos actually isn't that horrendous for you if you get them fresco style). I almost never eat bread or tortillas anymore. You gotta figure out what that is for you.

The work routine is huge for me. It's mindless to me to eat an apple/berries/banana for breakfast and to eat what I bring, a sub-600 calorie Chipotle bowl, or a white meat grilled chicken meal with green beans or mac and cheese from KFC with no biscuit. I struggle more when I'm at home!

Alcohol and sugar are still my weaknesses. And pizza. Shit. I eat a lot of pizza with my kids.

Thanks Geogran and good luck to you! My two favorite meals are brunch and high tea and I love MAG. I'm not giving those things up but will save them for special occassions, like Vegas! (NS actually has a really good french toast but it is one slice . . . LOL so I pile a half cup of blueberries on top and "splurge" with a tablespoon of real maple syrup.) I also don't track when I am Vegas. I'll still have my BB French Toast at Mag (I just don't work hard to finish the entire thing) but then will make different choices during other parts of the day.

Hope you have a great trip!

I agree with you Rumor that it shouldn't be about a "diet". I actually don't view NS that way. Rather, I view it as a way to condition my body and my mind -- while losing a lot of weight in the process -- to learn how to eat healthier and to actually enjoy it. Over time, for example, fruit started to taste much sweeter to me than before, so I can have a ripe banana, greek yogurt, cinannmon and a teaspoon of honey and it tastes pretty close to a banana cream pie! That's also why NS over time has as a transition days "off" so that folks over time can make meals and/or eat that is consistent with how they were eating in a healthy way on NS, including eating lots of veggies and low-fat protein as well as carbs, but in moderation.

Back at it, rest day was yesterday. I have the strength to be good until Vegas, and then I don't know what will happen! :feedme: Sorry about the swears, but if you are low carbing you will understand!

Last year my resolution was to drop 15 pounds. Only 20 to go!

Good luck to you LVisBeautiful. I used to roll my eyes a bit at "diet" support groups but they do help. This first week on Fast Five -- day 4 of 7 for me and then on the regular NS plan starting on Thursday -- is a bit of a challenge. I feel fine but you really need to be committed as on this first week I have to get use to not feeling full and feeling hungry every now and then, which is when I'm drinking more tea or water or eating veggies and salsa. It is also making me go to bed earlier than usual (which is a good thing) because if I'm up at 1 am I'm going to be really hungry and want to eat. LOL.

But sticking with this has frankly been much easier being on VMB and reading about Vegas and thinking about my next trip! as well as reading and responding to this thread. I believe it's all the little motivational things as 95% of any goal involving our health or even life I think is about having your head in the right place to want to commit, stick with whatever plan you may be on (including basics like cutting down or eliminating -- except for Vegas :) fried food) and staying with it when there are setbacks. I had a few over the course of the 45 pounds I lost but IMO, as with all things in life, it's less about falling or failing but more about not beating yourself up and picking yourself back up and trying to keep moving forward.

Indeed. Cutting down to x-pounds via diet is fine (assuming you're wrestling in high school or college), but if you really want to avoid expansion...it's about a lifestyle change. No other way to phrase that. I guarantee that what we did was lose down to x-pounds, stop NutriSystem, and sloooooooowly slide into the bad habits that resulted in the weight gain to begin with. You have to accept the fact that [insert something here] is no longer viable. You can't do it, can't eat it, etc. You just have to accept the fact that the changes that led to weight loss are your norms going forward.

I have a buddy who made Nutrisystem work long term, because he used it as a kick start to focusing on eating smaller portion sizes of decent foods more often throughout the day to avoid being hungry. It worked for him because he found what was sustainable about it for him.

I kinda found the opposite...when I was humming and making progress, it was easier to keep it going.

Time to celebrate... after 2 months, I'm down 15 lbs, not much... but I'm still proud of it. It's taken a while low carbing, about 4 days per pound but that's okay. It took me awhile to gain it (20 years) so I was okay losing it slowly but surely. Still have a few pounds to go.

20 years ago, when I was approaching my 40th birthday, as a gift to myself I decided to lose the final weight I was carrying from having kids. So for weeks, I went to the library every Tuesday evening (remember the days before internet when knowledge came from the library!) and while the kids were doing their thing, I'd pour over diet books. After reading about so many different diet plans, I finally stumbled across a book about the Atkin's diet and instantly knew I'd found a diet/lifestyle that revolved around the food groups I liked. (Atkin's diet is basically the same as the new named Keto diet - low carb).

I didn't really want to 'diet' and couldn't imagine a long term fix that didn't include my favorite food groups... cheese, alcohol, meat and rich sauces (probably in that order). The Atkin's diet fit the bill and combined with regular workouts at the gym, the pounds came off in no time. Fast forward 20 years and a summer filled with road trips and fast food it was time to get serious again. This time I didn't join a gym and since I'm retired, other than walking the dog every other day, exercise is non existent for me in winter. Still, with cutting out most carbs, it did come off.

If I had any suggestion it would be to find a diet/lifestyle of eating that fits your food preferences rather than just jumping on the next bandwagon. You won't enjoy success on a diet if you can't eat the foods you like. If you like meat, go a high protein diet. If you love cheese and bacon, go low carb. If you love salad and veggies, try a low fat diet. I have a girlfriend who continually goes on low fat diets yet hates salads and veggies. :bang: She beats herself up for months eating veggie plates and avoiding alcohol and does lose weight but then gains it back when she's off her diet. That's just silly.

Don't let a diet dictate what you eat...choose a diet that you can live with as a lifestyle change. While I love pasta and rarely have it while low carbing...I really enjoy it when I do splurge and honestly, I'd rather give up a plate of spaghetti or baked potato than give up my gin and diet tonic!

What do you mean 15 pounds in 2 months is not much?
    That is great!
    That is a good pace.
    I can't lose 15 ounces!

Congrats gambler! And I agree with vegasdev, 15 pounds is a lot of weight! For women, it can be 1 to 2 clothing sizes and, more important, I'm sure any doc would say that can have a huge impact on your vitals. When I lost even my first 10 pounds, my blood pressure, which was already good, dropped significantly (still healthy but puts me at great) and my blood sugar/A1C (diabetes runs in my family) also improved significantly. I basically went from being borderline diabetic to going below that threshhold after losing about 15/17 pounds.

    Congrats again.

Damn what a time to stumble upon this.

Woke up today fretting after stepping on the scale this morning after only seeing a .02 difference. The thing is I have already lost 10.4 lbs in 10 days since I started and this is without exercise. I will start incorporating exercise when it stops raining.

2 years ago I dropped 45 lbs and over the course of 2 years gained it all back.

As a lot of you alluded to, while diets are great to drop the weight, it’s doing a sustained habit change that will keep it off.

One of my biggest challenges is my wife and I are foodies. It’s not being a foodie that’s keeping me from staying svelt but it’s my wife I blame her. She orders this appetizer, this entree, that dessert and of course I order mine. Since she only weighs X amount, she always takes 3-5 bites and she’s full. Well I wasn’t raised to waste food and damnit not going to let that tasty food go to waste so I end up eating her plate too. I blame her for everything!
