I guess I'm the only person on this board that hated the Barbary Coast. To me, it smelled like one big toilet. And it was crawling with hookers all day. I remember back around 2000, some drunk skank was propositioning me around 3 in the afternoon!

@tex55 ... I never noticed that (any foul smells)... it could get pretty smoky back in the day, but that was not an problem isolated to BC.

They had a long pit of $5 & $10 3:2 double-deck pitch games (until Harrah's bought them, changed the name to "Bill's", and got rid of the good blackjack).
It was fun, with great cocktail service & Big Elvis was a regular in the cocktail lounge adjoining the casino, so you got to hear his show while playing some of the better blackjack in town.

The dog cart was an even better deal with the ACG coupon. Bourbon Street Hotel and Casino was just down the road.

I have a nail manicure set in a leather holder that I still use.

I remember many hours on the $1 10/7 Double Bonus coin droppers along the south wall. Filled many buckets while drinking the 10oz beer with dirty coin hands.

Also enjoyed the Victorian room. Good, cheap eats, although it got tiring hearing people's names called by the hostess over the public address system.

That guy's story is amazing, and sadly, closely matches the stories of most "successful" compulsive gamblers. A multi-millionare one day, borrowing lunch money the next. Stu Ungar and Nick "The Greek" Dandolos lived very similar lives. Both won many millions of dollars playing poker, and donked it off and then some on craps, sports betting, and in Ungar's case, drugs. Collections had to be taken up to pay for both of their burials.

Yeah, it's a shame. The addictive personality often dominates people in many ways. Stu was lifelong drug addict.

I think Archie is still living in Las Vegas. He got caught marking cards in a California casino, was convicted of cheating, and was sentenced to probation.

    Let’s see:
    1. Learned craps during 10:30am free lessons.
    2. New to blackjack and played BJ there, placed $100 buy in in the circle to get chips, before I got chips, dealer says “money plays”, and dealt me a 20. I grabbed my winnings and ran, totally embarrassed.
    3. Big Elvis was a part of the trip every time.
    4. The bar had 16-10 NSUD before CET got it.
    5. Used to park there if not staying there, and roam the strip with best free parking place on the strip!

    Really miss the Barbary Coast.

The "entertainment" memory I have of Barbary Coast was when Drai's was an after hours club in the basement. If I remember correctly, it used to open from around 2am until after dawn and attracted the all night party crowd. Some of the most entertaining people watching I have ever witnessed occurred early morning while having my morning coffee at a blackjack table facing the exit from Drai's.

These people may have dressed to impress at the start of the night but when they emerged at daybreak it was like disheveled, hammered vampires seeing sunlight. Once they could finally focus their eyes after coming out of the darkness, most had to make the walk of shame from the club exit through the casino to reach the taxi stand on Flamingo. Imagine a parade of all night partiers, staggering through the casino, falling down, hanging on machines, etc. while security personnel were at the ready to make sure that their departure happened one way or another. The dealers would even stop play at appropriate times so everyone could enjoy the show!

Does anyone recall the name of the good steakhouse at Barbary Coast? I ate there a couple of times but can’t, for the life of me, remember the name.

E5EEAD88-6948-45A7-A19D-0342CB3B4872.jpeg I remember playing there in the morning with the booming bass of Drai’s pounding the floor, the vampires emerging and discussing which strip club they were going to further escape from the light of day. I was always irritated that they wouldn’t comp bottled beer at the bar, only draft. But my fondest memory is hitting my first Royal there when I was first beginning to understand video poker. And I have this so that I’ll never forget!

I loved that place so much I may have taken a souvenir off the wall from there when I was drunk one night. Perhaps I will post later....

The one thing that stands out for me with the Barbary Coast was how dark it was in there. That coupled with all the dark wood gave it a unique vibe for Vegas. Great memories from BC and props to The Cromwell for keeping some of the color scheme and lighting the same.

I have a foggy memory of playing BJ there many years ago. Started winning and started playing green chips (way out of my league). Cashed out up several hundred, walked across the street to MGM Grand (now Bally's) and arranged a limo ride for me, my wife, and another couple to our hotel downtown. Rode down Fremont street with my head sticking out of the she sun roof.

I miss that place. One of the first place I ever played craps at and the first coffee shop comp I ever got wiht @Gaggles, while he was teaching me the game. Also when we were young and poor, we used to grind out $5 paigow poker for drinks and if that failed there was always $2 margs at the back bar
