Wonderfully filmed movie. Loved the Spitfire scenes because I am an avid fan of WWII aircraft. The aerial combat scenes were terrific, even if I kept yelling at the number two to lead his target better. Jeesh, he was getting me pissed off.

The location filming and the realistic shelling scenes made this movie very entertaining.

So, you know I have a bitch. The dialogue. It was almost like watching a foreign movie in that respect. When the soldiers were inside of that trawler, I couldn't understand a word they were saying. It was easy enough to visually follow the story, but might they as well have been speaking in Russian.

I teared up over the bravery of all the individual boat owners who risked their lives going across the Channel to rescue the stranded soldiers. They don't make people with that sort of bravery anymore.

Overall, a very good film and I highly recommend it.

We watched it last month and I agree about the dialogue being hard to understand. Even though we bought the Zvox soundbar which is supposed to make dialogue more understandable, we still end up turning on the closed captioning for most movies.

It was a good movie. And I would recommend it to anyone. But I don't feel like it lives up to the hype of the advertisement. Left me feeling like there should have been more.

Pair it with "Darkest Hour" and you will see the politics that led up to the civilian flotilla.

    Yes, an excellent film.

I'm hard of hearing so this movie might be frustrating for me unless I have the captioning option on.

Sad to say they are far and few in-between nowadays.

@mdee I kind of like One Direction music, but don't get the reference?

A lot of the English harbour scenes were filmed in my hometown of Weymouth, which wasn't one the ports that the real 'Little Ships' used as it is too far down the coast (it was used as a starting point for a lot of the D-Day landings though).

I think it's a generational observation / dig? My wife's kids...not even born when 9/11 occurred. To them Vietnam is ancient history - as far removed as WWII was to my generation. Interesting commentary about the audio...my wife - for some reason - can't seem to understand British/Irish/Scottish actors. I have to "turn it up" or translate. I have absolutely no problem with those accents.

That's what we did. Dan saw Dunkirk while I was out of town. When I put Darkest Hour on our Netflix list, he wanted to be sure we got Dunkirk for the same weekend.

My lady friend just left for Ireland and Scotland. I asked if she wanted me to travel with her and be the translator. After spending almost 4 years in England I almost spoke the same.

    My take:
    - Great movie. Incredibly shot.
    - Phenomenal sound. I saw/heard in Dolby Atmos (check if your nearest AMC has a Dolby theater because it puts iMax to shame.
    - Tom Hardy with his face covered up is a better actor than most of Hollywood is normally (i.e see Dunkirk, Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max Fury Road, Revenant)

I think the main reason the movie is so good is that it really...really gets the feelings of desperation across to the audience. Watching it you so feel how desperate these poor young men are; how they feel. And then, on top of this dire situation that makes you want to cry, you see how heroic they, and those around them, can truly be. The movie floored me.

Recorded it when we received free HBO/Showtime one weekend. Took me 10 minutes to watch it as I fast forward through the boring parts.

Generation disconnect on my part. Not being familiar with "One Direction", wouldn't know any of the members. Now, had you cast Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in the film, then I could do the band-to-movie connect the dots. :headbang:

Parts of it were good...........but I thought it was disjointed, the storyline jumped around a lot...making it hard to follow. That plus the dialogue made it harder to understand. It had good historical significance. A really good movie that covers that time is Mrs Miniver.

They would have been perfect for the role of dead bodies.
