So I was on a mission to collect some silver strikes this trip. I previously only had one that I won at 4 Queens years ago. I also won one from Palms back before I even knew what they were. So i hit up all the machines in 4 Queens and accumulated several. My thoughts were that I'd collect one of each and I cashed in the duplicates while playing. I came away with 8 regualar clear caps, one red cap, and one yellow cap $40 strike.

Now the question is what to do with them. I do kinda like them and still thinking about them just as souvenirs but right now they are $130 in souvenirs which is more than I spent on any other souvenir or cash I came back with. I feel kinda funny just keeping them as trinkets so I'm looking for opinions. I know @DaiLun is the resident expert and it wasn't until I returned that I did some searching and read in one of his reports that you could trade in 30 to get the special $300 strike during certain times which is pretty cool!

So for those who know (or just want to weigh in) what should I do with these? Keep them as collectibles? Sell them on eBay for a little more than face value? Some benefit to collecting an entire set? Keep as an investment? Something else cool that can be done with them? Lets hear it!

IMHO, the clad ones aren't worth keeping unless you're collecting for the $300. The next $3200 strike distribution is October 26th at 10AM. There will be 148 available to the public.

There is a website for the silver striker club, but I'm not sure whether or not I can post the URL, so I won't, but it's easily findable through Google.

The red and yellow cap have some premium attached to them. The red cap is worth $30-$40 and the Yellow cap is worth $80.00-$100.00.

    Hope this helps.

I play these every time I am at 4 Queens.
I try to keep one of each clear cap that I get and redeem the rest. since the $300 ones are so rare and only given at a specific time and date, I don't even bother with them.

From the tone of your post It does not sound like you really want to "collect" them unless there is a benefit.. so I would suggest just selling or cashing in the clear ones and Ebaying the coloured ones.

IMHO, the bulletin board at the Silver Strikers website is a better place to sell them because you take a 15% hit between eBay and PayPal.

I could see how you could get that from my post. I did indeed originally intend to collect them. I just didn’t think about how many clear cap $10 ones there were and after getting as many as I did, I started to second guess just keeping them for keepsake. I was genuinely curious what other’s opinions are, whether any clears were special, or whether others found any value sentimental or otherwise in certain ones or sets.

I hope you don't mind me posting this here, @Mitkraft.
We have a $200 Silver Strike from good old Imperial Palace. Got it back in 2004 after turning in 20 of their $10 Silver Strikes.
Also have a Silver Strike from every Vegas casino with a machine between 2004-2007. It was fun hitting the strip and
downtown to try and win some.
Good times and great mementos. Though, I think we'll be selling them off soon. Have a little less than 200 of them
and keep them in a hutch. We'll probably keep the IP one because it's the first place we ever stayed together and sentimental to us.
I'm an introvert by nature so not into silver strikers club meet ups but got a lot of good information from that site (and folks who are members).

Just when I started collecting these, the casinos started getting rid of them. I have several from Sam's Town, Venetian/Palazzo, 4Queens. I'm keeping the .999 strikes and the blue/red caps I have. Then probably sell the non .999 clear caps or maybe collect 30 from 4Q (currently have 21) and exchange for the $300 strike.

I wish more casinos had these..
Only Vegas ones I know of are 4Q and El Cortez.. I have never seen any "special" ones at El cortez.. and only been able to get 2 different clear caps from them (despite probably getting 30 total)

We just started our collection in June. I think we managed to get 6 different clear caps and one blue. Gave away one of our duplicate clears as a souvenir and cashed the other duplicates in.

They're a nice complement to the chip collection we started last year. I only wish we had started our collections earlier. We did try to get a silver strike at Venetian a few years ago, but it was our first time playing it and I got discouraged after dumping in $40 without a strike and gave up.

These are cool! Do certain slot machines drop them? I’ve not heard of these before.

4 Queens and El Cortez are the only places in Vegas that still have them I believe. They are only in specific silver strike machines which are obvious if you see them. Google Silver Strikers Club for a website with lots of info including where all you can still find them.

Are the "special" ones only during special times or are they available anytime?
I stopped playing as I was always getting duplicates and simply turned them in for the cash.

From what little I know.. the special ones are available at all times.. however you are much more likely to see them at specific times. (I believe around Halloween, St. Patricks Day and.. I think there is a 3rd.) They release new ones at these set times..
If you walk up to the machines, it is pretty easy to see if there is any special ones loaded in them as all the special strikes are in a different colour capsule. (Blue and red)
4 Queens also has 1 machine that had Gold capsules that are face value $40 and should be available at all times as they are awarded right on the reels but I have found this machine to be noticeably tighter then the rest to offset the premium gold strike.

Just wondering...do the strikes lose their value if taken out of the protective case?

I have several posts that address all of your questions. Search on silver strikes.

No. The .999 silver ones will discolor though. They're still worth $10.

IMHO, I won't play if there aren't red/blue caps in the machines. The reds and blues are the only offset to the house PC.

Doubt it. You can also buy replacement cases in case you get any that are super scuffed up.
