so the 1/3 game at MB plays like a 2/5 due to deep buy in stakes (1000 max). The 1/2 game, for comparison, while not much different blinds, only has a 300 max buy in. So the deeper stacks and more money in play leads to big action pots.

I’m this hand hero has $1200 to start and V has $1500. V is a younger Asian kid in a ball cap who likes to play in a lot of pots, esp vs Hero. He seems very tired or maybe that’s his act. Hero has an aggressive and splashy table image.

Action folds to V (MP) who raises pre flop to $15. Action folds to Hero (Button) who looks down at Ad Ac. Hero 3bets to $50 to take advantage of table image plus the fact V raise opens light sometimes. V 4bets to $150, Hero calls. Pot is $304 to the flop....

    Flop: Qh 9s 3h.

    V checks, Hero bets $200, V shoves.

    What to do?

Agree, doubt he is shoving with anything that has you beat currently.

Gotta call. Villain should not have many 4 bets beating you. Basically just QQ. And that hand probably should not jam all the time.

Also don't love flatting the 4bet even in position 400bb deep. I get it, but you can face a lot of these all in overpair decisions. And with the spr it will be hard to get away.

against aggressive, splashy opponent with a 3.4 SPR is an insta call. I think he's got KK, KQ, AKh, or 99.

I would have 5 bet pre flop, but in this exact spot:

I insta call by aggressively shoving my stack into a messy pile in the middle and flipping my hand face up triumphantly, and then when V shows up with QQ or AKh and makes the flush on the turn I’m calling him a donkey, pulling out a fat wad to reload and making a big show of how I have way more cash than the table max buy in, and loudly asking what does it take to get a cocktail in this room. Then I will tell no one in particular once every few minutes for the next hour that I should move up in stakes because this 1/3 game is for donkeys who overplay their [V hand] from MP.

On the other hand, I suck at poker.

absolutely call without fanfare, and do not show your hand if it doesn't hold up.

This is eerily close to how sh-- goes down at Mandalay Bay on Friday nights... Were you there last night?. Well played.

    Picking back up...

Hero checks his aces to see if one is a heart. Negative. That would have made a call a bit easier.

Hero says "I don't think I can fold in this spot" and puts out a stack of chips and tables the aces.

V says "oh wow you have them again" (4th time last night, won with them every time, one of those nights) and tables Kd Kc.

Hero's aces hold and scoops a monster pot.

Nice call, but why would having Ah make a call easier?

    Back door nut flush draw.

That (backdoor, aka runner-runner flush draw potential) and the fact if I have the A of hearts, I know he isn't representing the nut flush draw. Someone may shove with A-high flush draw (and 2 chances to get there) in that spot, but less likely to shove with a lower flush draw. So if I had it I could rule that out... unfortunately I couldn't in this situation. The big flush draw was a big possibility and the reason I was firing on the flop (to get him to fold a flush draw).

But ruling out an inferior hand actually makes a call harder.

That’s true. In this case you don’t block the draw (which you are beating), which leans toward call. If you had the Ah you would block that draw, which leans toward fold, but you would have additional outs and equity, which of course leans toward call.

Poker is hard, that’s why you insta call. Let’s leave the details to the suits in Washington.

Well - TRN merely calling the 4-bet preflop set all of this up. It’s possible that the villain would of folded preflop to a 5-bet (well maybe).

I would have popped it again pre-flop but I get why you called.

    Insta-call on the flop IMO.

What do you think of the Villain's play in this hand?

    Short answer: spewy

He was the only player who had me covered in chips at this point and was fairly aggressive. That said, with his raising fun pre-flop I thought he played it like an open book... I had his range down fairly solid by that point (I knew he was going to turn over KK, QQ, JJ, or possibly the other AA, and he wasn't going to get cute with AK or AQ). I think the jam was a bit of an overbet on his part, obviously trying to buy the pot. Less is more, I might have folded to what seemed like a value bet (e.g. if he check / min-raises my flop bet, I will definitely tank longer on that, maybe even find a lay down), so I felt the jam was more him feeling he was ahead with a "good" (not great) hand, and wanted to put an end to it right there before I could improve further (he may have wondered if I was on a flush draw or had one heart in my hand to go backdoor). I think he could have accomplished the same thing without losing his stack though.

I would take V’s line with AKh. Once in awhile I’m also showing up with 10 J suited here. Never AQ.

In general yes, but I really had a feel for his open and raising ranges by this point. He didn't mix it up enough.
