    My Trip Report

    Food Highlights

Hash House A Go Go – “Twisted Farm Food” indeed. We went three times.

Commander’s Palace $18.80 lunch – We had it twice this trip.

    The Palm $18 Businessman’s Lunch – Even w/o quarter ‘tinis it’s on a par, value-wise, with Commander’s.

The Palm– Delmonico benefits from the Emeril Affect, but this place might be as good as Charlie Palmer Steak.

Roberta’s – Such a deal with the LVA coupie. Don’t go in expecting a Michael Mina-grade experience and you’ll not be disappointed.

China Spice – Terri’d never been. She liked it so much we went back.

Japengo – It’s not La Jolla, but it works in the Mojave.

8-0-8 – Try the curry lobster stir fry.

Cascata Golf Club – Breakfast served with Four Diamond style and not a bad setting.

    Food Lowlights

Rio weekend breakfast buffet/Sunset Station lunch buffet – One visit to each was two too many buffets.

777 Brew Pub – Most of the sushi is pre-formed/-prepared and the “pub” fare seems to be a shadow of what it once was. Lackadasical breakfast, too.

Boiler Room (Laughlin) – Ditto on the not-what-it-once-was angle.

Kady’s – Nothing wrong with the breakfast fare but what the hell is up with those prices?

8-0-8 – Do not try the unknown bug that came with the coffee service.

    Golf

    Black Mountain (27)
    Desert Willow
    Bali Hai
    Eagle Crest
    Durango Hills
    Craig Ranch
    North Las Vegas
    Los Prados
    Red Rock - Arroyo
    Silverstone (27)
    Cascata
    El Rio (Mojave Valley)

    Bunk Space

    Green Valley Ranch
    Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas
    Rio
    Stardust
    MSS
    Golden Nugget Laughlin

    Show

LOVE – Still processing the experience.

I'd love to play a lot of golf in Vegas, it would break the bank more than my gambling budget does. One day though, I'll play out there.

    Thanks, very to-the-point.
Can you tell me what you order at China Spice and where it's located?

Curious what you had at the Palm?

Sushi is asking a lot of the 777. But then our whole experience there in March (granted, in the wee hours) was a disaster.

Note to golfntravel: The Emeril thing isn't just an affectation, he really is associated with the D, which probably does have some effect on it's image.

Hey you guys, if K2V likes Roberta's, the place has be above average and a good value / deal, and decent grub. Here I sit with my El Cortez 3 day comp that's good till Sept 22.

How does one renege on his signature line below? To be honest, 3 days away would do my other (better) half a world of good, she could use a few days without a screaming 2 year old. Only a pool would be missing from the mix.....I guess we could sneak in to the Plaza's Oasis.. :ssst: though, for that matter. Chances of it getting off the ground though are NIL at best….. Damn you Las Vegas, you’re trying to pull me back into the lair aren’t you…….LOL

That's a lot of golf for an old guy......

Sounds like a good time away Ken. Thanks for the update.

Green Valley Ranch. We had strawberry chicken -- hmmm, never seen THAT before -- and the Singapore noodles, and then walnut shrimp and lo mein, with hot/sour both times (actually, Terri had the egg flower the first go around). They also have/had a good deal going on Conundrum.

I've had sushi there before but we weren't at the bar to witness the, umm, preparation ... or lack thereof. But the quality seemed off from earlier tries so it's either a bad fish monger or a change in procedure. Why not have a handle on sushi? Sure seems to mesh with the predominate clientele.

As for the Palm, during lunch we each had the salad. Terri had filet and I had the ribeye. For din she had a slightly larger and much more costly filet and I had the strip-loin.

Delmonico delivers. I just don't see it as the do-all, end-all steak joint in Vegas, and the ties to the Big E can only increase the Q rating among members of the general public.

Ross, resistance is futile. Let's meet up in September.

We're not Johnny Come Latelys vis-a-vis Roberta's. Terri's been eating there for a long long time and it was one of my first stops during my first true Vegas visit. The fare isn't worthy of any slavering smileys and the service is Denny's grade (yet wholly capable). It's just good vittles at fair prices and most particularly when half off.

    Hi Ken,
I’ve got the Commander’s Palace lunch special on the list for next Friday. Is it busy enough during lunch to warrant reservations? Since you went there twice it must be good. I looked at the menu and I’m having a hard time deciding what to try, any recommendations. Thanks

Don't know what to say since this week's menu (braised pork stew or blackened catfish) is different than what we had last week. You might want to give 'em a ring and see what's planned for your visit, and then perhaps one of us can help. Regardless, it will be good. If going solo, I suggest going with the server's recommendation. If going double, order it all and share.

We've been seated immediately and had to wait, but in the case of the latter it took no more than 15 minutes, max. Gives you a chance to get a head start on drinking.

There are days when five large for Shadow Creek is a deal compared to the carnage in the casino. LOL

Wrapping up the research for my book, I'm less chagrined by how high the bar is set price-wise in Vegas. It's still damnably expensive overall, with some first-rate ripoffs, but there are some great values at several points on the scale.
