Rumor: More Greed in Las Vegas. Properties doing away with free toiletries

The green person in me likes this trend to put it on the wall. It's how it should be.

Being able to steal the little bottles from hotels was nice when I was a 20 something who took them to Europe on backpacking trips, but they are just a total waste to me now

 

It's more about waste than money, although as the WSJ article makes clear, it saves the marriott hotels that change about 2k a year. So much of the stuff gets trashed or stolen that it offsets people who use more or people who think it is funny to press the button 30 times to empty it.

 

I don't shower in Vegas it takes away from the gambling. I cant waste 10 minutes a day on Hygiene.

 

Yeah, the dispensers are better for the environment, and actually more convenient when you are there multiday and skip housekeeping.

 

Why does this feel like it's some part of a grand conspiracy?

If hotels do away with free toiletries (for whatever reason), then people need to bring their own.

This then prompts...

- People having to go to Walgreens/CVS to buy overpriced mini-toiletries

and/or

- People bringing their own shampoo/conditioner/body wash from home, and having to check a bag on their flight

I'm not saying that the arguments in favour of eliminating them are without merit. But I am saying that the results of eliminating them happen to prompt behaviours that are very profitable for other companies.

 

We stay at Wynn because of the toiletries.....

Uh, no, but their stuff is pretty good. I don’t know if the tower suites stuff is the same as the regular hotel side, but the selection we get is luxury hotel quality. I’ll bet they don't quit them.

I never cared much about hotel toiletries until TSA established all their obnoxious (but probably necessary) liquid rules. Then if I didn’t check a bag I just didn’t carry anything because I didn’t want to do the travel sized ziploc dance.

We often bring home pretty good sized bags of hotel toiletries we don’t use but collect up. They go to a Dallas homeless shelter-people with nothing who both need and appreciate. We give money too, but you’d be warmed by the surprise and appreciation for such a small kindness.

 

It's all part of the Grand Conspiracy.

 

Ha! Yep... these properties have been determined to ruin a good thing for some time now!

 

Probably not, but the things are very interrelated. Think about it, banning liquids means buying water from the airport (priced at $5 for 16oz) and buying toiletries in mini sizes. In other words, they end up making people spend more. You can go down the dark-hole of conspiracies all day -- I prefer not to. But, it does suck when more is coming out of my pocket

 

You go to Walmart or something similar. There are 4 oz. bottles (plastic) with a screw on top. You buy some and fill with shampoo or whatever and you don’t check a bag, just put it in the ziplock bag for your carryon and carry on. A great plus is you get to use your own product and you can reuse the bottles each trip. Maybe.

I agree. It was just a matter of time until somebody came up with that idea. And sooner or later all hotels will adopt it.

 

I would believe this..I’ve seen this “dispenser” type toiletries in a LOT of hotels...meh; doesn’t bother me as I bring my own anyway

 

I always assumed that the toiletries at the higher end properties were given to the hotel by the manufacturer at no or very low cost. To introduce their brand to more consumers.

 

What's greed, anyway? Does the OP hate capitalism?

 

The frugal AND environmentally friendly option is to do what I do - travel with your own refillable water bottle and use water fountains. Many airports these days even have water bottle fillers on the fountains to make them easier to use.

 

LOL I can imagine it now. Walking down the hallway to your room and the housekeeper sidles up to you... "Psssst hey lady, I can turn you on to some shampoo and lotion. "

 

I would take that as a hint I smell
