A friend of a friend whom I met in person once over 30 years ago and have since had limited phone, email and text conversations with
called last night and left a voice message stating that he needed to ask me for a favor and to give him a call because it’s too involved
to explain in a text message…

I have an uneasy feeling about this so I ask… What would you do?

A friend of a friend, met once over 30 years....does it honestly matter to you if you never talk to this person again? If it already doesn't feel right to you, I feel you know the answer. Personally, I'd pass.

    I would probably wait.

I feel like contacting him means I am okay with doing a favor for him (maybe/maybe not).

You will be already saying yes if you call him....why didn't he call you?

Call your friend who he's a friend of. Ask your friend if his friend called him too. Are they still friends?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess the favor has something to do with money.

Let's not jump to conclusions. Maybe he just needs a co-signer on a loan.

What would I do? Probably listen and hear him out. Then say I am sorry and I feel for you but I do not have the $$$$ to front you.

But then, it could be only a come-on for Herbalife!

I had a very similar situation once, except I worked with the guy so I couldn't avoid it. I just told him that I didn't feel comfortable about lending him $, etc. He then said "Okay thanx for f***ing me over." That was the last time we ever socialized outside of work, but I actually felt good about being honest and straightforward.

Maybe he's planning a big party for your mutual friend and wants you to help out. Maybe he needs your vote on America's Got Talent.

I would text as to your busy schedule and invite him to call again when he has time. Listen passively and finally explain things have changed since your last visit within your world and you wish him the best of luck. I would talk on my cell while having the iPad opened to google so to provide some ideas for his unknown request(s). Good luck.

    Call him.
Society has gotten so suspicious and distrustful that everyone automatically thinks everyone wants something or is out to get them.
If you don’t like what he presents just politely decline.
You are in no way obligated to offer assistance if that’s what it turns out to be just because you took the time to return a simple phone call.

    Screw that guy.
He fu#+&@ himself over and is not wanting to accept responsibility for his actions by blaming you.
I would have had a hard time not laughing or saying something to his sorry ass.

He might be looking for you to be a kidney donor.

He might need a date for Vegas.

He might want you to be a surrogate mother.

He might want to discuss Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime show.

He might want to discuss 6:5 Blackjack.

He might have a timeshare he wants to unload.

He might want your pot roast recipe.

I dont see how returning a call is something to be afraid of, assuming(as many think) he's asking for money, how hard is it to say "sorry, no". It's hard for many to say no to a close friend or relative, it's not hard at all to say no to a stranger.

It could be something more reasonable, like a reference, or links to someone else?

Agree with Tex. Call him and find out what he wants and then decide what to do.

Mama always told me to avoid being the eighth head in the duffel bag!

Come to think of it, would she be okay with it if I was #1 through 7? :ssst:
I gotta give Mom a call...

Good luck with your situation, mdee!

No friend of mine would ask me to call because they know I hate talking on the phone. :)

But yeah, why not call? Would you feel obligated to help, no matter what the request, if you were on the phone?
