What has the Indian gift shop across from the D become?

Interesting photo, topcard. Looking at that picture from the late 60s (looks like Rosemary's Baby was the feature being shown, which would likely make the year 1968) the current Spanish style features on the upper floor appear to be missing. So at some point after that they must have been added. Looking at even older photos, it seems they are a pretty recent addition.

The inside of the shop has Mission-style beams on the ceiling, but it's hard to notice them amongst the clutter. Again, in my opinion, whatever glory of the past may have existed for this building, it appears to be nothing but a glimmer based on its current status and location. I am sure there are historical buildings in downtown that are worthy of protection, but not this one.

Another one bites the dust... Soon it will all look the exact same. Goodbye character, hello cookie cutter!

What should go in: a reincarnation of Mermaid's. Gaudiness, oversized drinks, microwaved food that is just stomach-settling enough to prevent a hangover, and an excellent people-watching attraction from the second floor of The D.

What will probably go in: Chipotle - presumably as some market-research-justified strategy to attract millennials. If not Chipotle, then a place that only serves things with avocados.

It's just a gift shop! I think we can live with one less gift shop.

I have gone in there many times when I've visited downtown. I loved it, but never bought anything.

I've always hoped for a Fat Tuesday downtown, wish it was them instead of Evening Call. Hopefully Evening Call will have good frozen drinks. As gross as La Bayou was they had damn good frozen hurricanes! Haven't had a good frozen drink downtown since they closed!!

So sad that downtown will eventually have no character left:cry:

As weak as that may sound it will be more disgusting in person.

Don't worry as long as the old guy in diapers is around there will be plenty of "character" left.

The El-Co embodies "old school charm"... as long as she's standing (along with the Plaza, 4 Queens & the Fremont), downtown will retain its character.

My dad and his friends used to go to late shows there when they got off work in the 1950's. He worked at Pioneer Club and Golden Gate.

You could actually get some good deals on sterling silver and turquoise rings there 15-20 years ago.

I realize that whatever goes in there has to make money. But sports bars, frozen drinks and chain restaurants reek of suburbia. That's not what I go to Vegas for.

The place has changed a lot over the years. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/1888/photos

Remodeling hasn't begun yet. It looks like they're still clearing out the last few souvenir knick-knacks. There are quite a few signs in the windows asking people to not sit there...I'm not sure why anyone would care.

I would love for a Chuy's to go in there. It's a Tex-Mex place. But, it would fit right in with downtown. Elvis is all over the place. And, it's good food.

But, I do hope they put in a 24/7 place. That would be nice.
