I have no real opinion of Excal as a place to stay. Usually, when we arrive in Vegas around 10:00 am the first day, we hit the hit the pretzel stand in the food court so we can split a pretzel. They have a strong food court. We want to have something to tide us over until the happy hour at RM Seafood starts (3:00). This is a Vegas tradition. I will say that the doors leading out to Vegas strip look like the are incubating ever disease known to man.

Everyone has their own criteria for good/bad/acceptable. Its been years since I stayed at the castle but with a hotel that size it's potnetial long wait to check-in and the loooong walk to the room from the elevator that would have me @ D.
Stayed @ D not that long ago and liked it. Quick check-in and short walk to room.

I recently had a great time at Excal when I swung through it. I wound up playing over 3 hours in their casino. I plan on including a few nights here my next trip!

O.K. I need a lawyer to decipher that Ken. :poke: You are correct though. I've stayed at many so called dumps in some people's mind. Las Vegas Club, AZ Charlies Decatur and Boulder, Terribles now Silver Sevens, and Circus Circus to name a few.

I know this is going over the whole different people like different places but it seems in my experience everyone hates Circus Circus. I've been to the casino after a night at Terror Dome, the staff were wonderful with my mom in a wheelchair and it was OK but is it really that horrendous?

Once again thanks for all the info. After looking around I managed to find a great deal for Tuscany for that week. I will still keep an eye on Excalibur for another time. I'm also in Vegas in April and have decided to make that a Downtown trip.

I try to swing by there for an hour or so every trip. For me, it's nostalgic with the circus acts and arcade. I gather that the tower rooms are as good as Ballys Indigo or Harrahs Mardi Gras, but I wouldn't want to stay there. Not only is it (now) isolated from other properties, but the mood in the place has declined over the years. On my first trip in '87, it was a party day and night. Now, the place just feels down and out.

Clearly there are pro's and con's with both Excalibur and The D - I don't think you could have a bad time staying at either. But Tuscany for sure does not belong in this conversation.

I have stayed a few times at Tuscany and really cant fault it, certainly not for the price that I pay most times I have stopped there. The D is also a favourite of mine as well when Downtown. I wont rule out Excalibur in the future if the price is a good one.

I think you'll be happy with Tuscany

It was a few years ago but my last stay at Excalibur was fine. I reserved what was then a step or two up from the lowest price tier room (two queens) and it was a nice room. Good sized, nice beds, nice view. Nothing special, but a quality standard Vegas room. Excailibur itself didn't have a whole to offer us though. We hung out in the sportsbook and otherwise didn't do much gambling there. The casino is huge, but it seemed kind of dead, on what was a pretty busy May weekend. The clientele seemed young and working class -- not the families with kids you might expect from the them. It's not as bad as Caesars in this regard, but it's a long haul from your room to the front door.

Personally, unless you are really curious or the Trop/MGM/NYNY/Excal corner is calling you for some reason, I would go with something center strip mostly because of the location, and you can probably get a room at a better place for the same price.

This is true. I always have found it easy to rag on Excal and Circus Circus. I played a majority of my last trip at Excal and I have a much better outlook on it. It sort of has the vibe the Imperial Palace tried to give off... "dress down, live it up." I dont go to Vegas anymore to put on uncomfortable shoes and look good for anyone. Excal is one of those places that you dont need to worry about that. My t-shirt and flip flops are normal. When I do that at Cosmo or even some of the lower end center strip props with plenty of kids my age going for their once in a while Vegas party trip... I feel like I am not doing Vegas right by not "doing it up" more. I have only been in Circus Circus once and I thought the casino was perfectly fine. If it was any closer I probably would stay.

Excalibur also has a very nice little spa - and of course its no Aria, Cosmo, or Venetian spa, but the day pass for hotel guests is $10 Sun-Thurs. That is a crazy good bargain to rejuvenate.

Got to add, we actually preferred Excaliburs buffet over Wicked Spoon. Controversial I know but WS didn't feel as special as we'd have hoped. (The snooty server didn't help). Really did feel we'd wasted money there.

    Excalibur really isn't that bad.
It gets a lot of hate for being the "Trashy Castle"
I probably wouldn't stay here if it wasn't on a comp offer though. (If I have to pay, I can do better!)

Yes, there will be lots of kids in the arcade, pool and food court.
Rooms are okay, pool is decent and food court variety is better than most.
It's not the Wynn or Cosmopolitan but it's a step above Ellis Island or Casino Royale.
The location is good and it's easy to get around from there. (WAX, free Monorail, Deuce or walking)

Con: The time share people can be aggressive.
Being approached for a "sell" every single time you pass gets real old, real fast.

A bit childish, some shows canceled, and too many resorts people upfront asking people stupid questions.
Otherwise, Excalibur and Luxor have a meal deal, so go for it. I liked buffets at both props.
PS: no one on the bus though.

For what I saw on YouTube the Excalibur pool looks decent.

We stayed there in 2011, the pool area was fine. It had several different areas if I remember correctly.

The pool area is actually pretty decent, not crowded. I had a great time!
