Just returned from a 4 night stay at the Golden Gate. 3 nights were comped, 1 was on me. I had been staying at lower end places in the CET previously, i.e. Flamingo, Harrahs, Ballys, but really was looking for a reason to switch over to the Golden Gate or the D and start staying downtown.Well, I got to the Hotel on a Sunday afternoon, checked in and tried the $20 trick to possibly get a suite. That didn't work so I pulled out the big guns and tried the upgrade for a 1 lb. bag of fresh, squeaky, cheese curds. Not even that worked and I was given a room right above the stage on Freemont Street. Needless to say, no sleep for me before midnight. The room itself was fine, only there was no cold water.

I'm mostly a craps and blackjack player with about a $1000 bankroll per day. Should I keep trying to somehow see what they will offer in the future, or try somewhere else. I really want to stay there especially with the new hotel going up.

    that is all !

1000 per day? Go somewhere better than GG. You should be generating enough Theo to get rooms all over downtown and at plenty of strip casinos.

...$20 sandwich has never worked for me at GG. They always offer to upgrade me to a suite for an additional cost. I stayed on three nights comped in December and, since the wife was joining me and isn't a big fan of their tiny rooms, I decided to upgrade. My Fri/Sat/Sun night upgrade cost was $85/$85/$60 (I think). Since I was on a comp there was no resort fee. I would highly recommend their suites...quiet, plenty of room to move about, coffee maker, frig, nice shower, couch and big TV. We were two doors down from the elevator...casino to room in 30-60 seconds. Worth the cost. With your bankroll I would talk to a host to see what they can do for you. If anything, pay for the upgrade then ask for it to be comped off on the back end.

I agree the GG is a nice casino but the hotel is old, small and not so good. 1K a day bankroll would get you free rooms almost everywhere downtown. Boyd places/cortez/.D/DT grand for sure.

As far as the $20 trick, the GG only has about 100 rooms, every room matters and is probably looked at by staff, at a place with 100's or 1000's of rooms things can slip by unnoticed.

If the Golden Gate wasnt your thing but you want to get on the radar for the new property - maybe the D will be better for you? Nicer hotel for sure.

1k a day bankroll will get you free rooms ANYWHERE (if you stick to slots and vp)

I was gonna say...it certainly isn't enough for "anywhere" if you're only playing blackjack, UTH & craps.... but for downtown? Yeah....except maybe the Nugget.

And ask for a room that doesn't face Fremont.

I thought about going to the front desk and asking for a different room, but I figured since it was free, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Yeah, next stay, I'd try staying at the D. With $1k/day, you should be able to get a room there without an issue. I've stayed at both, and like The D's better. Rooms are bigger, and nicer. And, you control the A/C. You might want to call them, and ask for host services. See what they can do for ya.

I did talk to a host while there. He was a very nice gentleman, and he gave me his card and told me to give him a call before I come out again, which will probably be in march. After staying for so many years at Caesars Properties I really hope something can be done downtown. My wife will not be happy but she'll have to adjust. I just got to remember the squeaky cheese curds.

Sounds like you got the same room I had a few years ago. The window would vibrate from the stage speakers constantly whenever any sound came out. Talk about sleep deprivation!

Staying at the D, I have definitely noticed the Fremont Street noise in the room, enough that in subsequent visits I made sure I had a high room facing the other way.

But honestly, it's for the people I'm sharing the room with, not for me. I can't imagine not being able to sleep in Vegas. The band would have to be playing in the room to keep me awake. Detectives believe alcohol is a factor. That, and coming in from Eastern time. When I come back to my room in Vegas, I hit the mattress and am out within a minute.

One piece of advice: ALWAYS bring earplugs to Vegas. If it's not the street noise it's your friends/SO snoring or the couple next door reenacting a Cirque de Soleil show naked. Whatever it might be, be prepared for some kind of noise. Google Hearos.

    this.

there will not be a lot of options for $20 trick upgrades at a small place like this. they have standard rooms and few suites, not a lot of wiggle room.
normally, I would say charge your dining to your room and ask for a host for back end comps. but they don't have ANY restaurants!
I have nothing against GG, but is sound like you would be better off at any of the downtown properties. if you have never stayed at DTG, you should try that at least once. the D would be a good option too. they have now merged their players card accounts with GG. they can easily look at your play from GG and see what you are "worth".

I used to work with a former Navy guy who called everyone ‘shipmate’ and ended every intercom broadcast with ‘that is all.’ Smiley Face Wink Wink.

It's a crapshoot at GG with the 3-nite comp deal. Most of rooms face out onto streets, but a few inside rooms are available. My first two stays (comped) were with the 'louder' rooms, but last one was an insider.
What a difference. Who knows what next time will bring - it comes down to when you check in and there is no rhyme or reason to it.
For free, who cares much anyway. All I did to earn the deal was play one hand of $50 BJ one time.

Yeah, my 1 stay there a few years ago wasn't the best. 3rd floor if I remember right. Window pointed out over the roof to the A/C. Couldn't even see Fremont St. But, I could open the window about 1/2". Helped since I couldn't turn off the heat.

It's been a while, but over the years, I've stayed at GG three or four times on the 3-night comp. The inside-facing rooms are great. If you get a room facing the Fremont canopy, ask for earplugs at the front desk.

I tried to book the offer for the first weekend of May last year, but I was told that it was not valid on holiday weekends. I don't consider Cinco de Mayo to be a national holiday, but GG apparently does.

Call the host before you go next time. With that bankroll at the GG you should be able to get a suite, assuming you used your players card. I love to stay at the GG suites for the ease of access to the casino floor. There are clear drawbacks to the GG versus other properties, but not for my needs. If you can't get a suite next trip, ask the host for a standard king at the D. that's a better option than standard GG room.
