Rookie Mistakes

My first few years going to Vegas I was Mlife Platinum (typical BR 1k a day so not High Roller caliber but fairly decent play) and had no idea I could get extra stuff comped off besides what my mailer offer had listed on it......I left so many comps on the table. Luckily one day a host introduced himself to me in the H/L room at Aria and said if I needed anything call him or email him....lucky for me my last day he found me and asked if I had a good stay and said he would see what he could do on my bill.....came back and said he comped the entire thing man I thought I had hit the mother load. I laugh to think up until then I would pay my $500+ tab happily and go home with no BR

 

I think New Orleans probably wins that prize.

Yeah. As a female, I'm pretty careful about how much I drink when my husband (the non-drinker) isn't around. Before I got married, I always made sure I was surrounded by friends.

Yeah. I had my opinions about all of this myself, but I was going to hold my tongue. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was really shitty. I would be beyond hurt and pissed if my husband did something like that. I'm all about having a good time, but stuff like this pisses me off. I would imagine the OP would be really mad if the tables were turned.

But # 3? - hooking up twice with a "lovely woman who seemed to be enjoying your company"? A 'rookie' mistake doesn't come close to explaining that one away.

 

First time playing black jack at The Stardust in 1994, tried handing the dealer money instead of laying it on the felt..

Thinking a hooker was really into me - not knowing she was a hooker.

Timeshare presentations.

Getting blasted on the flight(s) to Vegas and blowing entirely too much money on the first day of the trip.

Room service.

The Glitter Gulch.

The Boardwalk Casino buffet.

Buying cocaine from sketchy bartenders.

Buying cocaine from strippers.

Buying cocaine in Las Vegas.

Not utilizing a map, thus getting long hauled from crooked cabbies..

 

I think the whole point of my post was what a moron I was on my first trip there, and I never claimed to be proud of it. Having said that, if the worst marital mistake I made in Vegas was playing blackjack with a strange chick, I figure I'm ahead of most guys who come to Vegas without their wives or girlfriends.

 

How about those HUGE slushy drinks that get warm and leave you looking for a necessary room every 20 minutes!

 

I can't recall what I ordered, probably pasta. I do remember the photo experience though, I wish I could find it!

 

Dude - you met up with her a second time and paid for her gambling. You were on a date. My wife would cut my balls off, and justifiably.

 

When you find someone nice at the nightclub, make sure you have a room to go back to (if you're into that kind of thing). It's pretty embarrassing to get caught by hotel security sharing a restroom stall and get kicked off the property...

Here's kind of a n00b mistake I and my ex made ca. 1980s.

We got sucked into one of those Special Deals (tm) at Bob Stupak's Vegas World where they dole out freebees once an hour for three hours. This was the biggest ripoff I have ever seen in Las Vegas and it was free!

Examples.

They gave you special marked chips "good for one play, win or lose, on any even money table game bet" and they said they were marked so you could not just go cash them in at the cage and "you win you get paid in real chips" or so they said. Well, when you played them at blackjack and you lost, of course the dealer took your chip. However when you won, the dealer took your marked chip and paid you ONE, as in singular, real chip. Excuse me????? WTF????? They just said that's how the special chips work.

Then, each hour they supposedly gave you "$5 in slot action, good on all $1 slot carousels", but it was one token, supposedly worth $5 which had to go into a special coin slot that was on the side of some (not all) $1 machines. Of course they did not pay at all.

Free Keno action. Yeah, right. (Free Keno crayons?)

Oh, and the "special souvenir photo" was a TV camera printing to a black and white 1980s vintage printer. Jeesh!

I don't think any casino has the nerve to do such blatant time-wasting rip-offs anymore!

 

I only made 2 rookie mistakes one was pretty embarrassing and the other was for a lack of knowing better.

1) My first time booking Vegas for my group of friends I just turned barely 21. Im on expedia looking for hotels and I saw "Whiskey Petes" for $33 a night. Having very limited income at the time I thought I scored.... Until arriving and realizing I was still 40 miles from the Las Vegas strip .......

2) Walking through the casino through the tables and behind the dealer and than getting yelled at by staff talking about how I can't walk behind the dealers.

 

My first time to Vegas was when I was 24. I had this vision of gambling and getting all sorts of free stuff comped. I think I brought maybe $700 to gamble with for 5 days...thinking that was a lot. I fly in on Friday night, staying at MGM.....walk to the lowest limit blackjack table I can find which is $15....sit down, buy in, give ID, ask for a players card....the pit boss basically says "why bother you're not going to get anything unless you play $25 a hand or more".....felt my whole dream of vegas come crashing down.

 

When I turned 21 the Internet hadn't been invented yet!

 

Not sure I understand your meaning of free play chips? You play chips and if you win you get paid in real chips but in any case win or lose those free chips are one time only and the dealer takes them..
In 1986 buddy and me did a Vegas World deal and that included $500 free play..Heard some couples just sat at a Roulette table and bet $250 each on both red/black and got back $250 real chips (No 0/00 of course coming out)
The others freebies were lol (Keno crayons?) except free drinks the entire stay..Thanks Bob!
Still have the pouch with all the info they gave you at check in..

 

This is just too funny. I mean it's actually booking a hotel in another city (Primm). 21 y.o.'s are just so naive...it's actually kind of cute. Bet your friends were p-i-s-s-e-d. What happened next? Rebook at Holiday Inn?

 

Rookie mistakes:

1) Never even occured to me to be tipping for free drinks until a veteran friend pointed out I was pissing off the CW. Never noticed anyone else tipping either.

2) Went with zero research and zero plan.

3) One small budget for gambling, entertainment and spending. Spent most of the last day killing time around the hotel.

 

I kid you not, when I was 19 a buddy and I dressed up in tuxedo shirt & bow tie for a night of gambling on the strip...................funniest part was we really thought we were the shit in Vegas lol

 

I still joke with my ex-wife about the time back in about 1990, we were leaving Tropicana to head out on the strip on one of those 121 degree days. we stopped at a baskin robbins (which from what I remember was inside the Trop), each getting one of those sticky gooey ice cream sundays, then finishing it while walking in the desert south toward what was once Hacienda. lets just say when we finally arrived, wasn't sure if the water was really a mirage of sort

 

where do we begin for rookie mistakes

• not advising credit card company I would be going to LV and having cards and ATM cut off in the middle of needing cash ASAP
• saying yes to every attractive performer at adult establishments
• thinking calories for the day in 110 degree heat would be best consumed through Gatorade and vodka
• needing SPF 100 million in said 110 degree heat and not being prepared
• pulling out the phone at any table game
• not taking off work the day after returning from LV

i am sure there are a million more, but vegas has a funny way of deleting some memories as well
