I won a trip to Vegas next week. Normally I stay on the strip or downtown. I am staying this time at the thunderbird which is between the two on las vegas Blvd. I've looked at pics of the area and it looks like it has been really fixed up but I always remember this being a sketchy area. How is this area and is there something to do or avoid there? I do have a rental car also

Can't say anything about the hotel, but I wouldn't walk around there after dark. Less then a mile away is Chicago Joe's Italian restaurant. Open for lunch, but drive if you are going for dinner.

One more suggestion...Luv it frozen custard is less then a half mile from your hotel. Some of the best custard you can find in Vegas. Not as good as here in WI, but very good. Opens at noon, I think. Again don't walk there at night.

Personally, I still think Naked City is a little rough around the edges, although admittedly you're closer to the Arts District. I basically agree with Joe that it's just too poorly lit and sketchy after dark.

Well... several years ago there was a lot of property purchased in the area and many of the really crappy apartment complexes snuggled between LV Blvd and Main St were torn down. There's still plenty of riff-raff around though. One of Las Vegas finest (just kidding) strip clubs/adult book stores (Talk of the Town) is right across the street, so... ya got that workin' for ya!

My advice would be to stay somewhere else. Even one of the cheaper Station or Boyd places. Why fly somewhere only to stay in a bad neighborhood?

No effin' way I would stay there. You're going to Las Vegas for a vacation?!? I'd rather pay to stay at the D, DTG, or even Jerry's Nugget before I'd stay in that area.

I love how they try to make this hotel "attractive"

    Hotel details
A 16-minute walk from the Strip, this relaxed boutique hotel along a palm-lined road is 4 miles from MGM Grand Las Vegas and 1 mile from the Fremont Street Experience 24-hour mall.

Streamlined rooms offer flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and tea and coffeemakers. Suites add living areas, and upgraded suites have pool views, separate living rooms and kitchenettes.

Parking is free. Amenities include a wedding chapel, an outdoor pool, and a retro lounge with a terrace.

Now, OP may have specific reasons for staying at the Thunderbird, those are just my opinions.

At first I didn’t think there was any good advice for the op, but I went to a site where people advise other people about their trips and was surprised by the positive comments. Most of the posts I read were visitors trying to get an extra night without paying hundreds of dollars. General theme: rooms nice, good value, sketchy neighborhood. But unless you need easy access to drug dealers, my advice would be oh hell no.

I had a friend stay there. I didn't think it was bad at all. It was cheap, the room was clean and again it's all about perspective. Some people think the walk from Bally's to Ellis Island is ' Dangerous " Is the area a little sketchy I suppose. Then again I lived in Newark for a long time. So to me that's nothing.

I “ think” we had a room there one night. I believe it used to be the Aruba.

Back in the old Vegas days it was originally the Thunderbird.

If it is the same place, we had a great time, we went to see a band in their little venue. The bar is a total trip, filled with local characters and the bartender was filled with stories. Never really noticed the neighborhood as sketchy I guess.

The property looks nice enough, and the lounge gets good reviews. I'm going to dissent with the group here and suggest it might be an interesting place to stay for a night. I do think the area is still really really sketchy at night, though.

Bring extra security measures like door locks etc. and don't forget your Glock. Just kidding I'm sure it's fine.

Just for what it is worth we were driving between downtown and the strip in the middle of the day in the area you are planning on staying and my buddy who was driving asks my son on his first Vegas trip if he wants to see a crack whore. My son replied sure, well after a quick left and right there she was yelling at us as we drove by laughing. Now how my buddy knew where to find her is a story that is still unanswered. :ssst:

Odd hotel choice for the contest you won; should be an interesting trip report if you decide to stay there.

Thanks for all the replies. We won't be venturing out in the area it sounds like. We are probably driving downtown the first night. The second day hitting up some small dive casinos during the day, the Rio for dinner and to the strip that night and the 3rd day. Probably just be at the motel to sleep and rest up

About 25 yrs ago I answered an add for Bob Stupak`s Vegas World(now The STRAT ) and was put up across the street at
the T-bird. The place was pretty run down, but was trippy because it was like stepping back in history even back then.
I had a car so it was easy access to DT and the Strip. I can`t imagine this is the same Thunderbird. The lounge was
like stepping in a time warp, helps if you are wasted.

Same as said above, I wouldn't walk around that area after dark. You have a rental car, so just use it to head other places. If the goal is to save money, a little unsolicited advice: Motel 6 on Tropicana. Its the same rate (or cheaper) than Thunderbird, better area, and you are a five minute walk from MGM Grand. I have never stayed at Thunderbird, or even been inside, but I just don't see it or the neighborhood offering a lot
