If you have never played Craps the wrong way or the "Don't Pass /Don't Come" rather than the pass line you are among the vast majority of players. You do need to know a little about how to play the don't before you get your money out there. It's not really a learn by doing thing unless you just won the lottery, but It can be allot of fun if you know what you are doing.
First of all , on the don't you are betting on the don't pass line that you won't roll a 7 or 11. If it does come, you lose! A 2 or 3 wins,(12 is a push) any other number becomes your don't point. After the come out roll if a 7 hits, you win! The exact opposite of the pass line.
You lose on the come out roll on the don't on a 7 or 11, 2 or 3 wins, ,12 is neutral,it's a "push", no harm go again.
If you make your point on the Don't Pass come out roll the odds shift dramatically in your favor because the 7 hits more times than any other number, there are 6 ways to make a seven.
Then you have to lay your odds, that is to say you must put up the higher amount of the odds formula. For instance, because a 10 or a 4 pays 2 to 1 on the pass line, on the don't pass you have to put up10 to get back 5, or MULTIPLES thereof. 5&9 Put up 3 to get back 2. 6&8, 6 to return 5 and so on. You do this by setting the odds bet next to your Don't Pass bet and say "Odds or Lay Odds". The dealer will position your chips.
Why does that make sense? Because you are twice as likely to hit a 7 before a 10 or a 4 so the odds are two to one in your favor. The odds on the other numbers follow respectively, and you MUST lay the correct multiples of any given odds for any number, 4,5,6,8,9or10.
That's where your brain has to do some work. The dealers aren't going to help you more than a couple of times on this, because the casino makes more on their odds if you put up the wrong amount. Like, putting up 10 on the odds if your don't point is a 5,6,8or 9.
You must put up the correct lay odds to win the maximum payback when the 7 hits.
So then why would you want to go to all that trouble?
    Here's why;
Lets say you've gotten lucky and made the come out roll several times, and have a few numbers up with lay odds. There's a whole lot of your money out there and you are the silently saying to yourself, COME ON 7 ! You're on edge, then that 7 hits! Mama I'm home! They scrape down all your bets and pay you all the money at once! What a rush!
That's what it's all about, that is gambling. To me, if you can afford to lose it and it won't cause you pain then that's not gambling, so if that big win REALLY makes your day then it's "Baby's Got A New Pair Of Shoes!"
Same goes with the rest of the game, "Don't Come" with lay odds, getting two or three don't come numbers up with lay odds. Don't betting the numbers on the spread, and so on.
So if you really get this game down and you just can't seem to get on on the Pass Line you might try the Wrong Way, (as it's called).
Just keep a low profile. Many Pass Line Bettors don't like a don't player on the table. OK, I feel you man. But after all, when I win that's a good thing for me. Ever been on a cold table?

Is it any wonder that many of the Greats all play the don't?

I have never played the Don't at a live table to date.

However I have a strong desire. I am a Pass+Come bettor with max odds. If a 7 shows up, I'm SCREWED f**ked and pissy for the next 96 seconds. If numbers are repeating, I'm reeling it in.

The glory, to me, seemingly of the Don't is that a 7, instead of wiping out all your bets, is that you WIN everything rather than having to hit point by point to get the come bets.

But given the odds, wouldn't my strategy require a greater bankroll?

Yes, since you are laying more on the don't pass and don't come (assuming you still want to make the max odds bet)

I prefer to play the don't because I like having the odds in my favor once the point is established (also the overall odds are slightly less negative than the pass line). However, the pass is more fun because that's what most people play......I'm perplexed!!!

Frank Scoblete, Henry Tamburin, Dom LoRiggio, The Mad Professor....Jimmy The Greek.. (doesn't mean they all play the don't)
You can't really make a living playing Craps, UNLESS YOU ARE A DICE SETTING INSTRUCTOR, and I only know of one. (or you can cheat if you like prison food...)
The point is (no pun intended) in order to have fun and break anywhere close to even you must have 100% knowledge of the game, and the discipline to know how to cut your losses when you are on a cold table, and maximize your winning streak when you get on a heater. Half the battle is knowing when to hold and when to fold.
    NO RISK, NO REWARD.
    Have fun.

I respect playing the dark side however I play craps to have fun and I have way more fun playing the pass line than playing the don't so I rarely play the don't unless the table is ice cold. (Which of course heats up the table).

The classic don’t player is the guy slinging five black chips at the five dollar table, ordering seven and sevens or Seven-Up. Also won’t touch the dice. The guy I don’t get is the guy who’s don’t on every shooter until he gets the dice, then he’s pass line. I always want to ask “How do the dice know that you are shooting?”

As someone who often plays that way, its because you don't want to go against the rest of the table when you are the one shooting

    What constitutes a "cold table"?

Have never played the don't but as a relative newb there's been several times I felt like it was the right thing to do but had no idea how to play the odds correctly..now my interest is piqued and I'm off to a online craps simulator

Thanks, I can kind of make sense of that. But still, you were hoping each of us would lose until your turn. Not that hopes and dreams count for anything at a craps table, but I’d feel more honest betting the pass until I got the dice. Then I’d bet the don’t on my shoot and tell everyone that I suck at this game.

But I’m starting to think Ben Jammin’s true purpose in posting this thread was to unite the come and the don’t and to make craps great again. So in that spirit I will make my first don’t bet in December. Can’t we all just get along?

Not at all, even though many people see it that way. I want to win, but I am never hoping for anyone else to lose (and even clap when a shooter hits a point and the rest of the table is happy). none of us are going to win every wager we make. But for some reason, craps is the only game where people take it personally if you do not bet the same as them (the "you are hoping I lose" mentality). It irks me when I bet the don't and the right side shooter gets pissy and proclaims I am betting against him. We are all betting against the house. I am just making a different bet against the house. The same way roulette bettors wager red and black on the same spin or baccarat bettors wager bank and player on the same hand

I'll put $5 on the come out w/ odds, then play the Dont's the rest of the roll.
This way I'm cheering with the table to make the point but still get paid when the seven rolls.
I have been surprised quite a few times when they through 3 or 4 numbers, hit the point, then 7'ed out soon after. Good times.

I turned to the dark side last year but sometimes play the pass line if I'm with friends just having fun or if the table seems choppy. I like to walk around and look for cold tables, then I play the DP and one or two DC's. It's not a perfect strategy though, I've been rattled playing the dark side a few times. You have to pick one side though, if you try to switch sides you'll get hammered.

I'm a don't better and I love throwing the dice for a couple reasons. First, I'm generally awful at hitting points so I usually do well betting dark side. Second, if I make a few points and start losing, I can always pass the dice. Gotten a few scowls and once or twice been asked why I did that because people aren't paying attention to what I'm betting. Their problem, not mine.

Image if people behaved in the same manner at the roulette table.
One person bets black another bets red and they give each other dirty looks.
Then another person comes along and bets green 0 and all hell breaks loose.

I will shoot from the don't if its just me or no more than one other bettor. But I like to mix it up a little (play the pass line about 20% of the time), so why not play the pass line when it also has the benefit of not pissing off the rest of the table. Unfortunately, I have encountered worse than scowls. I have been cursed out a few times and once had a drink thrown at me
