hes not dead yet, but will be very soon

    as per TMZ

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

Smoked for likely 45 years and looked like he never exercised a day in his life.

They just said on the WCBS channel 2 news that he is NOT dead, but on life support! I specifically remember hearing that he has passed on yesterday. (Never underestimate the ability of the human body to recover!)

For some reason, it was so important to have a scoop that TMZ declared him dead. The right thing to do considering the day would have been to report the hospitalization and let the family make reports as appropriate. The world won't end if we don't have breaking news on every frickin thing.

I was so very sad when this (very conflicting) news broke this afternoon. Tom Petty is truly an American icon and a genius; all the fantastic songs he wrote; among my favorites "Last Dance With Mary Jane", "REFUGEE (my favorite)", and "Yer So Bad". I am so glad i saw him in concert this spring at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul, as well as three previous concerts! I still have video clippings on my phone! He was among the best I've seen; and such a humble man too. It's sad he had a troubled upbringing; as well as first marriage; yet he had finally found happiness in his life. SO BUMMED I will never see him perform again.

TMZ never reported that he died. they reported that he was taken off of life support...it was CBS who reported that he died then issued an apology

Wildflowers is simply one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. Hoping he pulls through with all the misinformation out there not sure if he has passed yet or not. Certainly will be missed.

The very first rock album I ever bought with my own money was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Into The Great Wide Open". Man, I played the Hell out of that cassette. All these years later, it's still one of my favorites. So sad that I never got to see him perform live.

They just said on the late news that he is hanging on and that many reports of his death were made, and were (hopefully very) premature.

Yeah, I just heard it on the morning news. Looks like the news is real this time, unfortunately. :(

Goosebumps and very moist eyes watching this.

Another of the greats I’ll never to see.

I’m still sorry that I blew my chance to see The Eagles before Don Felder passed.

I did get to see Steely Dan, though, before Walter Becker left us.

I hope I get a chance to see Bob Seger.
