Help with Roku

Is there an easy way to find the free shows? It seems I have to nake a lot of clicks and subscribe to a channel before I can find this out.


Also, what is the check mark with a circle around it next to a show?

I love my Roku but would find it disappointing without netflix and hulu.

I just use the search feature a lot and search for actors etc then look for the free stuff. Of course you can ignore anything that says free with subscription if you dont have any of the paid services. There's tons of free apps (even some las vegas themed ones) but to be honest very little worth watching.

If you have satellite of cable service its really nice to watch shows if you miss them (or have a friend of family that will share their password with you) As far as the check mare and circle I'm not sure what that is. I know they have symbols designating if its an actor or movie or channel but not sure of that one.

Like bnlphan said unless you have subscriptions to services like Netflix, Hulu, prime, HBO go etc its pretty useless.

 

You can login (on a laptop/computer) on Roku's website and add/remove channels that way as well.

I do like using it to watch an ABC show that I can't stay up for.

But I was hoping there was a listing somewhere of the free channels and then the shows offered within that channel. Right now I spend more time digging through each channel than actually watching anything. I just wanted something to watch for an hour or 2 in the evening when "nothing is on"

Also will probably subscribe to Netflix or something next winter, but would like a listing before I choose one.

 

Try this site https://cordcutting.com/roku-channels You can set a filter so it only shows free channels then select a category you're interested in. It doesn't look like any site lists a full lineup of all the shows.

I love Roku,mostly Netflix and You Tube. If I lived closer to Nyc or Phil;I might even go with an antenna and cancell DTV.

 

Crackle and Popcornflix are two free Roku channels, but they will have some commercials during the movie.

To revive an old topic:

Has anyone traveled with a Roku streaming stick? I'm wondering if anyone has had success with them in casino hotels.

 

How old is your roku. With older ones:

- If the wifi is open and doesn't require a password, they work fine
- if they have a log in screen, the old sticks couldn't handle these log in screens that checked for things like last name and room number. The workaround is to log into the internet on a laptop and use that to access the hotel internet. Then turn the laptop into a wireless hotspot that is accessible by the Roku.

I have an older Roku and this is what I do.

I believe the newer ones have hotel/dorm mode that are supposed to be able to handle the hotel log in screens but I don't have one of these.

 

Aren't the USB ports on most hotel televisions locked out?

 

Don't know, that's why I was asking.

I have a couple of the larger units at home, but would consider buying a stick for travel, if it could be used in the hotels.
