Is something big going on the first week of October? Having trouble with comped rooms on the strip and downtown especially 10/6 and 10/7.

Global Gaming Expo is pulling in 26,000 that weekend, but that is not a big weekend by Vegas standards.

Does anyone actually get a paid vacation day for Columbus? Does that even exist?

I do. And I have at every job I've held post-college. I think it's very industry dependent.

It must be! In my 20+ years post college I've never even heard of getting Columbus day off. Did we get that off in school? Been so long i can't remember.

I was also wondering the same thing. I had looked at October 4th, 5th and 6th with my comp offer. At first the 4th was blacked out but the rest of the days were available as comp'd. So, I checked back a few days ago and all nights were available for my stay at the Luxor in a queen suite. I book a queen in case my buddy or friends decide to go. So, I'm going to be staying at The D Tuesday the 3rd then Luxor the rest of the stay until leaving Saturday the 7th.

No other mLife resort would comp all of the days I wanted so I also am curious what exactly is going on that week for it to be blacked out in early October.

    from https://www.federalpay.org/holidays/columbus-day

"Columbus Day is one of ten federal holidays recognized nationwide by the United States Government. All non-essential federal government offices are closed on Columbus Day, and all federal employees are paid even if they receive the day off. Many private-sector employees will also receive paid time off or special holiday pay on Columbus Day.

Columbus day commemorates the arrival of the Christopher Columbus in the Americas. It is celebrated every second Monday of October, and has been a federal holiday since 1937."

I grew up in North Beach in San Francisco, a predominantly Italian-American community, and Comunbus Day was a "big" holiday. Then over in Berkeley they started declaring it "Indigenous Peoples Day", after declaring Columbus as a "murderer" and a person who committed genocide against the native people.

It's also UFC Fight Week with UFC fight on Saturday night. Combine it all together and that could be why rooms are hard to get comp'd.

Just to be clear I'm not knocking Columbus Day. I'm just jealous I've never had the pleasure of that extra day off!

I think this is a big factor. I'm noticing more and more that prices are higher on Canadian holiday weekends. Looking at May, Victoria Day weekend (May 19-21) is the most expensive of the month, including Memorial Day!
