A couple months ago when we checked in late at night we had some VH luggage already in our room at MSS...think that was the 2nd time it's happened. Went down to the front desk and made sure the room wasn't assigned to someone else and we weren't going to have a surprise in the middle of the night (which we didn't). Seems the big issue is miscommunication between VH and the front desk...they really need a system that updates guests' rooms in real time. If I was a VH guest I'd be upset knowing someone could have gone through my luggage at their leisure.

The biggest problem is your deadbolt wasn't a true deadbolt...maybe it was a lifesupport bolt? Either way I hate when rooms don't have the extra latches/chains.

They have the same problems with check ins at some hotels. Housekeeping marks the room as cleaned and available but when you go up sometimes the room hasn't been cleaned and prepped yet. Just that the person in Housekeeping marked the room as such.

Thanks. Yeah, VH is a BIG thing for them. I figure the charter plane carries about 220 people. They have 4 regular charters a week so that is an automatic 880 people a week that visit. Divide that by 2 (double occupancy) means that 440 rooms are being used for VH travelers in a week. Since the charters overlap each other I would estimate that there are at least 220 rooms being used at any time just for VH charters. This doesn't even include charters from other travel agencies so Boyd was a genius to tap into the Hawaiian market. They don't have to rely on the walk in/reservations people like most other hotels because they know their rooms will be used.

I think that is why the East tower closure caused such a problem because it wasn't anticipated and caused them to be in an "overbooked" mode because they didn't have rooms available even though people had reservations.

You are also correct, many people whine and bitch and moan but maybe if suggestions or solutions are offered management might be more receptive. This is unless the person wants or expects to get something for their troubles, that is another issue in itself.

That isn't good, looks like I will have to remember to bring something so nobody can open up my door when I am in the room.

Too bad, like the airlines it seems that customer service has gone by the wayside, instead replaced by the need to squeeze every buck out of the customers. Almost a hint that maybe someday soon Boyd might institute the dreaded reso....ffffff. Sorry, don't want to say those dreaded words in case I jinx it.

OK, got a call on Thursday evening from the director of Cal hotel ops. I must say I was a little perplexed because he kept focusing on hotel security pounding on the door at 7:50 AM and i wanted to focus on the fact that a stranger entered our room at 5:30 AM with the dead bolt on and the DND sign.

Anyway, we kind of went in circles for 5 minutes and at the end, he says what can we do to make it correct. I say we are Emerald, we get the the Gold Card and all our rooms are comped. How about a Hawaii Vacation? His answer...I'll have to check with the GM on that.

This morning, after my wife and I talked, we decided we really didn't want to go to Hawaii again. So I emailed the GM and said rather then the Hawaii trip, put a couple of hundred in Free Play on my card for our October trip. I wanted to say $500, but my wife said don't sound greedy, let them decide.

That was Friday morning. So far no reply as of 5 PM CDT.

If you'd of asked for $500, that'd of been a SNAP call, as the freeplay literally costs them ZERO.
as BubbaKitty said, they're glad you're not a concealed-carry person..or that of been one DEAD porter.

I would think the charters would "block" rooms and no one else on the floor (or specifically set aside rooms for all charters) would be "others". OR the little tags that go in the key slot are pink or purple to identify the room as being occupied by a charter guest (for DND or maid service). It can't be that difficult to organize. Any room changes go through whomever is responsible for organizing pick up of luggage and not before all hands are on deck.
That's what you pay the big bucks for....efficiency and organization. Screw ups cost you as the pay scale is supposed to cover the bases.
Good luck Joe. I think the last proposal is reasonable and maybe they will offer the 500$.

Good golly this incident has spawned a lively thread! Just shows that we downtowners need some new topics rather than the usual "How are the rooms at ..." stuff.

Joe, I hope you end up with the deed to the place. I suspect though that this sort of thing occurs largely because the people doing the work are not folks who left their jobs at NASA. I just went to the dentist for the third time to try to get a crown properly fit, still no go. I should be furious, because he probably could have worked for NASA. Each time I walk out drooling with a numb mouth, a tooth that aches later, and a promise that all will be well when we try again in a week. I should be furious, but I figure that's not a good idea when the guy is going to be putting a drill in my mouth. Don't know what that has to do with your situation. I guess it's just that life is short - blow as few fuses along the way as possible.

If Joe gets a free trip to Hawaii for someone coming in his room by mistake thinking he was a VH customer I'm hoping they do the same to me in a few weeks. Come on in. I'd love a free trip to Hawaii.

With all of the changes/upgrades that the Cal is doing, they should put in a new system. And, make at least a part of it accessible to VH. So, every morning the porters/VH people can log in, and just pull a real time list of the customers, and their room numbers. I can't imagine that would be too difficult. They wouldn't need full access. Just the room numbers. That way VH wouldn't have to worry about getting updated info from Cal, and the Cal could tell what rooms are booked for VH people.

Good luck on getting some freeplay from them Joe.

I feel like 200 free in free play is asking too little.

Tell them you want the money back from the room when the incident occurred and you're next upcoming trip rooms comped as well as the 200 FP. Kinda late now that you already threw the 200 out there but I feel like you could've gotten more and left some on the table.

His room was comped, and all he wanted was an apology. I am on your side Joe. If somebody walked into my room at 5:00 am, heads would roll. There is no excuse for that kind of incompetence. I don't understand how people can say sh+t happens, and let it go. Slow drains, bad Ac, remote doesn't work that's one thing, but there is no excuse for this. We have gotten so used to bad service that we overlook a lot of things that we never would have years ago.

With all of the VH charters that arrive and depart on a weekly basis maybe the Cal/VH should look into blocking out the rooms in the East Tower only. (After the renovations are done).

Actually, I wonder if this is not already the norm. When I used to use VH and bought the complete pkg. I always got put in the East tower rooms. Lately, because I have room comps, I have been going on a modified pkg. called "casino air" where you fly with VH but the rooms were booked comped through the regular Cal system.

When I've been doing this I always get rooms in the West Tower.

It's possible that because of the East Tower renovations things are getting pretty messed up between the Cal and VH.

If a deadbolt is applied, that means that there is someone in the room. Not downstairs at a meeting. Someone sick inside and
can't respond, sure, open it up. Can not apply deadbolt in empty room from the hallway.
I will have to agree with timspeed. Do they think that everyone would just roll over. Cal/VH personal should worry about opening locked doors.
Lots of people are now concealed carry.

Actually a door stop will take care of all this unless someone decided they want to break the door down in which case you have plenty of time to defend yourself or call security

I suspect a door stop could easily be pushed clear of the door from the outside.

I agree, slide a ruler under door to push doorstop back and presto. I think the Addalock gizmo is the way to go.

To end this story...The GM said he would put the suggested "couple of hundred" on my card for the next trip. I told my wife and her reply was oh, maybe we should have asked for more. I said you talked me out of the $500 I wanted to ask for.

Quoting the GM now...Joe I understand your concern about Security going through your double lock however many of our VH customers are old and if we need to do a well check we have to have the ability to go through a double lock. Being they still had you as a VH guest it's what caused the issue. Again I'm sorry for what took place. end quote.

Just to clarify, it wasn't Security that entered our room at 5:30 AM, but a bellman or porter. Oh well, I'm letting the issue go. I received $200 in free play. But just know your room isn't as secure as I assumed it was.

As somebody mentioned in this thread, what if I had a concealed carry permit...what could have happened with a stranger entering the room at 5:30 AM?

I think I might have insisted on suite comps for all future stays (where you already qualified for a standard room comp).
I doubt any of the VH guests are given suites...that would have been my argument, anyway...
