Why don't locals like going to the strip?

We live in Niagara on the Lake (cute little wine country tourist town for those not in the know - think mini-Napa) about 15 minutes from the Falls. We operate a B and B. I really try to avoid the little main street unless I am forced to go with f and f. I have been down the main street once in the last six months yet live 10 minutes away. While I get frustrated at not being able to make a left hand turn between July and September onto the main road to town, I simply detour along the lesser known farm concessions and take a slower drive to where i want to go. I certainly don't resent the tourists in any way shape or form. They are the lifeblood of our economy around these parts.

We do go to Fallsview Casino enough that we get valet for free so other than an extra ten minute drive, not too bad. We definitely don't go to Clifton Hill or stroll along the parkway mid-summer.

Unlike Vegas, in offseason, weeknights, you can easily shoot a cannon down most of the streets without scratching anyone.

I live in Florida - 3 miles from the ocean...have only been to the beach two times in the last 10 years.

I live in SF. I stay away from the over priced tourist traps in the city.. but I don't live in vegas so I love the strip.

I don't know, lately to me the whole city of SF is nothing more than an overpriced tourist trap. I used to love going to San Fran but lately it is just too expensive for me, especially when the "dumps" are going for over $100 a night. Unbelievable, you have to pay at least $150 a night for a low end room.

I never go into Waikiki as much as possible. I don't remember the last time I went into Waikiki, probably at least 2 years. Too much traffic, assholes jaywalking across the street, expensive or no parking. Yes, I used to go into Waikiki for dinners and weddings and special events but most of the time we go elsewhere. Not worth fighting traffic.

I understand about not visiting areas though. In Honolulu I worked for a Canadian company over 20 years ago. Since most workers weren't from Hawaii they would go on an outing once a month, sponsored by the company. Before that I never visited the Arizona Memorial, Polynesian Cultural Center or go to a luau but since it was free and provided by the company, why not.

I have friends who live in vegas and they don't really go to the strip very much for some of the same reasons I don't go into Waikiki.

Pick a popular spot, the locals and the self-appointed (and visiting) cognoscenti will trash the "tourist traps" of said locale.
