My fiancee (at the time-now my wife)and I spent eight days in Las Vegas at the end of May. The biggest thing we did was get married but I had a long list of other things that I wanted to do on this trip that did not get done. One of those things was to make my first visit to the Cosmopolitan. Another was to check out the setup of the World Series of Poker. With less than 3 hours before I needed to get in bed before departing the next day, I took a cab from Caesars out to Rio and spent an hour or so checking things out. I hated not having more time to spend there but I needed to check out Cosmo so I caught a cab down there. Once there, I walked around to see what was going on there. I played some video poker at the Chandelier Bar and thought it was truly beautiful but it just didn't have that gambling vibe to me. So I walked over to Bond but I didn't see an open seat on the side of the bar that lets you watch all the people walking by on the strip. That was a major reason to me for playing there. That left the Sports Book Bar and that is where I went. This was more my style anyway. It had friendly and efficient bartenders with patrons that actually seemed there to gamble.

I was inside of my last hour of my last night in Las Vegas when I kept a hand of 10 of spades, J of spades, and K of spades. I was absolutely dumbfounded with the Q of spades and A of spades filled in the blanks. Jackpot. I was playing dollars so that was a very much appreciated $4,0000 win for me. :woohoo: I still had $150 on my meter after they counted out the 40 $100 bills for my handpay so I played a little longer and enjoyed the congratulations of the bar crew. I tipped out the bartenders pretty well and hit the street for the walk back to Caesars. It was an easy walk because I felt like I was walking on air after my good fortune.

This was the first Royal I have hit since one at Harrah's New Orleans three years ago. I spend a fair amount of time in casinos (mostly New Orleans & MS Gulf Coast) and play a LOT of VP when I am there so I felt like I was overdue. One other oddity of this trip to Las Vegas is that my fiancee (The Baboo) also hit a Royal on this trip. Hers was a .25 Royal at Gustav's at Paris where we were staying at the time. She was pretty happy with her thousand dollars. It's funny because we walked up at the same time. Her machine had a bar stool and mine did not. As a gentleman, I had to let her have that machine and it gave her a Royal. That was her second one and this one made eight for me. We have NEVER both hit Royals on the same trip so this was truly a first.

Fortune truly smiled on me as I got a wife and a $4,000 Royal on one trip.

Well, my good fortune continues. The Sweet Baboo and I just spent four nights at Harrah's New Orleans and I was lucky enough to hit another Royal. This one wasn't as sweet as the one at the Cosmopolitan but I was still glad to see it. It was a progressive .25 hit at the Hoodoo Bar (which we just call the quarter bar) that gave me 1,0019 dollars. The crazy thing is that this is the fourth Royal I have hit on this same machine. All were progressive quarter jackpots. If you play at that bar, I suggest trying to on ole lucky machine 74. It has been good to me. I once hit Royals on ole number 74 on consecutive nights with both of the Royals being in Diamonds. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to pop a Royal but she did get two green sevens and a "two times" multiplier on a $5 Double Lucky machine for $1,500. So it was a pretty good trip for both of us.

Unfortunately, my Royal streak is over. The Baboo and I spent a couple of nights at the Beau Rivage last week and neither of us hit a Royal. Still, I am pretty sure that until my last two trips, I have never had consecutive trips with me hitting Royals. So I guess I should count my blessings for this year. One time I did hit Royals on consecutive nights at Harrah's New Orleans but never on consecutive trips.

Things are definitely back to normal. A couple of weeks ago when Powerball and Mega Millions both hit $350 million, The Baboo felt that we needed to run down to Slidell, La. to get us some tickets. She had some free nights at Hollywood Casino over in Bay St. Louis, MS. which is only a 25 minute drive from Slidell. So we made that drive to Louisiana a reality and went over to Hollywood for a couple of nights. VP was literally the only game I played at all until my last two hours when I went up to the poker room and played some hold-em. No Royals came so reality has come home. I did have some luck and came out ahead on the trip even with the $120 worth of lottery tickets included. Some luck did fall in my lap to help make that happen. I had just sat down at the Lobby Bar on the second day and was having a great conversation with a bartender I had met the previous day when I hit quads. It ran up credits to the 125 mark and just kept on going so I looked a little closer. Due to my inattention, I had not pulled up my usual JOB but was on a different game that paid 400 credits for quads with no kicker. I was playing dollars so I was completely happy with that outcome. I had some other decent hits but that was the best one. BTW- this was our first trip to Hollywood since Katrina and we were both favorably impressed. It isn't fancy by any means (our favorite bartender joked that they were the "Dollar General of Casinos") but by a pretty wide margin, their employees really went the extra mile to make you happy and feeling welcome.

That's "Bonus Poker Deluxe" where quads pay 400 and two pair only pays 5. Strategy is very close to JoB, but straight draws play like DDB. If the full house and flush payouts match, it's about 0.1% better than JoB in return.

Sucks to come home without a royal, hopefully you'll get two to make up for it next time! ;)
