The north/south problem is that, as you noted, there are exceptions, necessitating the addition of a comment like "...of contiguous land which is more often south of the Colorado River than north of the river."

As to the rim, the “Hey, take one more step and you’re going to fall into the canyon!” is approximate at best. Worse yet, in some places there’s no sharp drop-off. For example, you can drive from the city of Peach Springs all the way to the Colorado River – so where’s the boundary between rim and canyon? I don’t know. Well, what about in the other direction: how far south from the canyon does the south rim extend? Some peope might maintain the rim is a one dimensional boundary line, but most people include things like the GCNP hotels as part of the rim. Exactly how far south? I don't know.

Next question: how many rims are there? I keep talking as if there are exactly two rims. However, other adjectives are sometimes used. Even the Grand Canyon National Park web site talks about a northwest rim. OK, maybe that was just a mistake. But what about a highfalutin document like Physiographic Rim of The Grand Canyon, Arizona? It talks about exactly one rim. Sigh.

 

Exactly. Maybe there is only one rim. If a rim encircles a vessel or container of some type ... well, the canyon isn't a wine glass or a bathtub so how about no rims? Also, is the overall designation arbitrary? Why doesn't the "Grand Canyon" begin above Page and continue southwesterly until it peters out at about the Grand Wash Cliffs.

Anyway, the point was, and using common parlance and understandings, I doubt there is a place on the south rim where you can face due south and see the north rim.
