With how well the California is going over post remodel, I just thought I'd throw a thread out there on pure speculation on MSS. Anyone have any info or thought on the matter? I do like the rooms and the vibe of MSS as is but after staying at Cal a few weeks ago, I'd be curious to see what they could do. But then again they could do it and ruin whats great about MSS currently. :)

They could continue the bathroom remodels that they started. Did 01 and 02 rooms on all floors, but heard of nothing since. Perhaps when done east tower of Cal in a couple months, they will continue MSS remodel

The rooms at the Fremont are in dire need of a remodel. My guess is it will be a few years for MSS. The California remodel was a real improvement. The West Tower rooms are amazing.

I'm not a fan of the remodel. But that's because they are raising their room rates for rooms that are remodeled. To me the existing rooms look fine so I don't care to pay more for the remodeled rooms. I just use the room to shower and sleep so I don't need anything fancy.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind staying in the remodeled rooms but I don't want to pay more for it. I hope that it will be a few more years before they start to remodel MSS and charge higher nightly rates. Before this I would stay at the Cal because they were cheaper than MSS but after the remodel the Cal will be a little more expensive than MSS. Hmm, after MSS is remodeled then Fremont would probably be the cheaper of the 3 hotels. Should be a big task to remodel the Fremont rooms, I can't see how they can do a remodel like they are doing at the Cal but then the Fremont rooms and bathrooms need major remodeling and should be done before MSS IMHO.

How much did the Cal raise the average room rate after remodeling them?

It's only $10 more per night. The Cal doesn't have resort fees like other places (like Orleans). I would gladly pay $10 more per night to be in a renovated room. So if it was $55/night and now it's $65/night........doesn't bother me one bit. Not like it's a $20-$30 jump or higher......

Not sure how much "cheaper" you'd like to get. You do get what you pay for. Is the expectation that renovated rooms cost the same as every single other room? Highly doubtful now, especially in Vegas with paid parking, etc.

actually it depends on the time of year and how busy they are. It came out to $15 a night more for me during April (not including tax).

I rather stay in a non renovated room and pay $45 - $55 a night. Like I said, I just use the room to sleep and shower so don't need anything fancy.

I know we have had parts of this conversation before in another thread. IF they decide to remodel MSS rooms, at minimum I would love to see all of the bathrooms remodeled. We have stayed in the rooms with the remodeled bathrooms and it is definitely an improvement. I am taller and those shower heads were just way to low for comfort. We have not had to pay for rooms for quite a while because we have had comped rooms. Just my opinion.

I won't play at Boar's Head bar now, they could easily make it more comfortable on the arms and neck.

I see an issue popping up in this thread
It's what you are familiar w/ paying for a room in your Downtown casino hotel
One poster has no issue paying a higher rate
another poster is more familiar w/ previous experienced lower rates.

That's Vegas............and it is a very familiar topic of discussion on this board.

I got a good chuckle out of The Boar Bar being uncomfortable to play VP !
I thought It was JUST ME !
That damn gold rail is hard to navigate !
But them again, after one Vegas trip of VP at many bartops --- in different casinos -
I had to have some shoulder + neck work done by my physical therapist !
Add in --- a crowded flight of 4 plus hrs both ways - an YUP..... VEGAS is hard work !!!!!.

I would say that the casino floor is just fine for what it is. but the rooms certainly do need a remodel. but the Fremont should be first.

They would detheme it and it would just be a big room with no adornment. Maybe some flair bartenders and dancing girls but thats about it. would be a sad sight for sure if that happened.

I don't think Boyd would detheme the place, they operate very differently than the Strip Casino conglomerates. I think they would update rooms and spruce up the casino. MSS hasn't aged too bad since Boyd bought it.

Frodo and Bilbo and certain residents of Middle Earth might be comfortable with the shower heads, but us tall guys from Tennessee are not. Bathroom renovations would be appreciated at MSS.

I totally agree with your take on the room only being a place to sleep and shower. I have no need for anything else myself either. As long as it's clean and quiet I could care less about the view, if it has a couch, balcony etc.
I don't go to Vegas to sit in my room. I spend about 6-7 hours a day on average in my room and that's either in the shower or the bed.

What we do need to remember though is that we can't expect to keep paying the same room rates year in and year out. Prices go up every year on pretty much everything. Inflation averages about 3.25%. The casinos costs of goods and labor go up every year and they have to pass that along.

Downtown properties, especially the Boyd properties are an outstanding value compared to anything on the strip.
I just came back from a 4 nite stay at MSS, Wed - Sat and my total room bill was $84. 2 nights paid, 2 nights comped. That's hard to complain about where in years past I paid on average probably $4 - $500 at places like MGM, Mirage, NYNY etc.

Yes, change is inevitable. A few years ago I stayed at the LVC because they had the cheapest rates downtown. After that I moved to the El Cortez vintage rooms because they had the cheapest rates downtown. After the addition of resort fees the Boyd properties (and 4 queens) were some of the cheapest downtown but now with the renovations I am not sure, the 4 queens may be the cheapest downtown? I didn't include Fremont because I want to self park my car but unless they go through major renovations (implosion?) I doubt I would stay there in the future.

I wouldn't even consider GG or D or the new project because with resort fees their rates will still be higher than the Boyd hotels or 4Q. Plus I don't like the atmosphere and loud music at those places.

But many of us are old fogies that resist change and rather pay the cheap rates than higher rates for a renovated room. I remember when the Cal and other hotels would renovate their rooms but I didn't remember them raising rates because of the renovations.

I know, now that I'm getting older I am more well off so can afford the higher rates (and higher airfare, rental cars, etc.) but I rather use the extra money for gambling and other activities (like strip clubs, lol:poke:).

The shower head being low - just took me a little time to get used to
I could care less about it now.

I'm still crackin' up that other people find The Boar Bar uncomfortable; too !
