Do you trust in room safes?

So I wonder if you lock a safe before you check out they have to have an easy way to get it open for the next occupant...if they can get in so easily...need I say more?

Thoughts?

 

When I found one locked they did send two people up, so it was well documented.

Here's a related question: Has anyone here (as in first person, no FOAF or anything) had a bona fide case of money or property stolen from a LOCKED in-room safe in Las Vegas (that's Las Vegas, established casino hotel, not Guam or an off-strip no-tell motel)?

 

Same thing happened when I checked into the Hard Rock a couple months back: the safe was locked, so I called front desk and they sent a uniformed security officer to open it. Easy for the hotel, difficult for the guests.

I do trust the safe though. I've returned to my hotel room to find the door wasn't closed all the way by housekeeping. If somebody's walking the hall pushing doors they're going to take what's out in the open, not spend an hour trying to figure out my pin number for the safe.

 

I trust them. I think most room thefts are "snatch and grab" crimes of opportunity —jewelry, phones, or laptops left lying on a table, safes mistakenly left open (I've done that), that kind of thing.

I recently stayed in a Harrahs AC room that didn't have a safe. I was not happy at all. It was only for a night, so I carried everything of value with me, even to the pool.

And no—I've never had a room safe broken into.

Yes I trust the Safe. It's better than not having one at all.
Once at Luxor I had maintenance come up and change the battery.
Never Lock the Safe when you are Checking out. Leave it open.

 

Of course there is a way to open it.

Nothing is foolproof, but it is convenient and better than having it lie around in the room.

They don't tell all staff how to get into them, and since they will log key cards and newer safes may even log when they are opened, seems like an easy way for people to get caught.

 

I've had to call to have a locked safe opened either because I found it locked on arrival or it malfunctioned. In all cases it was an obviously official and documented process and always performed by a security officer. It also didn't seem like an easy thing that any non-security personnel would have the capability to do so yes, I trust them for their purpose. Anything I wouldn't put in them I also wouldn't travel with.

 

Thanks all I guess safe is better option than converting my bankroll into banana chips and walking around with them in my shoe all day.

If you have any concerns though you can always get a safety deposit box. I've used those at numerous properties. There is no charge normally for guests.

 

But what happens when an employee leaves or is terminated? Do they change their procedures or codes so that person can't get into the room safes anymore? I was always afraid of that happening, someone who left would know how to get into the safes and would do that to get back at the former company. For me I don't carry that much money so I don't store my money in the safe. laptops and cameras probably but not my money. But everyone is different.

 

When I found the safe in the Flamingo locked, I phoned the desk and they sent two guys, a techie type with a magic box, and a "suit" type, I assume security supervisor or something.

The tech plugged in the magic box and had the safe open in less than a minute. They both looked in and agreed it was empty. I'm assuming that even someone with the know-how would not be able to open it without the magic box and that there's a code they need to know, which is changed on occasion, to make it work.

 

No since I always have a car I like to lock some goods in the trunk discreetly.

 

I don't really have much of a choice.....it is all I have. I have to trust it

I've never had a problem with room safes.
But I have also used the safe deposit boxes at the cage when I had a really big win that I wanted to take back home.

 

Be sure to take a fork or spoon along for that banana omelette if you pound the pavements in the summer months .

We've never had any qualms about using the safe and no incidents in 17 years.
When leaving your room be sure to double check that the exterior door actually closes fully and locks so opportunists can't enter your room and grab stuff left around the room.

 

This was my experience as well once in LA when we fat-fingered our PIN. Brought in a laptop or something, attached a cable, and within a couple of minutes the safe was open.

 

Since I don't recall any threads on VMB about thefts from room safes I feel pretty good about them.

Please say more, share some links, if they can get in so easily. And define "they".

 

Anything can be put through the what-if-o-scope. One guy in 1,000 who has a problem is going to have one take, the other 999 will have another take. So anecdote means what, exactly?

Other than taxes and death, I'm not sure of much else in life that is a certainty.

If you can't have peace of mind using a safe, probably best not to bring to Vegas whatever you intended to put in there, despite the odds against it going on walkabout.

 

I've never had an issue with leaving valuables in my hotel safe in Vegas, or even elsewhere. The only anecdote I can provide is when I was at the Excalibur in 2014, the safe in my room was locked when we checked in. We called the front desk and said they would send someone up. There were TWO security guards that came into the room, they plugged this digital key into the safe's control panel, and got inside. Looked around to make sure there was nothing left there, filled out some paperwork, and they were on their way.

Interpretation: I feel like if it's that complicated of a process to unlock it, then it's not something that just any old person could go into someone's room and get into. That experience gave me confidence, and that confidence is yet to fail me (knock on wood).

Of course, that whole string of formalities could just be a charade to make the process look more complicated than it really is. I'd rather not go down that road in my brain.
