Do we need a new golf thread? Well, if you play the game, then I'd say, "You bet!"

I'm starting to line up tee times for the grand September road trip!! I can't wait. Plus I have a couple buds flying in tomorrow for five days of golf, chow and beer frivolity!

    Wazzup with you?

Ken, I was wondering since you are a golf writer, are you a good golfer? I would assume so. I would be good at the beer frivolity part of your five day excursion.

Like most of my peers, I'm a bit above average. I can shoot in the high 70s, I can more frequently shoot in the 100s.

I'm more of a bogey golfer. I have a tee time to play at Kapalua Plantation course on Friday. I'm lucky, my cousin's kid is one of the pros there so can get me on for free or for a cheap price. I will play Kahili on Sunday. I have something on Saturday so can't play but maybe better to take a day off anyway.

Plantation is a kick. It's actually one of those places I tell folks not to play it too far forward -- yes, I know, Tee It Forward, an all. But tee shots can get very repetitive if you're up too far and you lose a lot of the angles. Have fun.

P.S. I've played King Kam but not Kahili. I look forward to hearing your take on it.

It can get that way. I just don't care so I keep plugging along. Now golf is very important to me and the last thing I want to do is pull off three straight snowmen. But the vast majority of us will never get remotely good enough to take it for more than what it should be -- fun, a challenge, scenery, good times outdoors with (hopefully) great people. I have too many rounds of 60-38 or 36-51 to think otherwise. Different strokes, I know.

I played Plantation a couple of decades ago so it will be interesting now that I'm older and hitting much shorter. I usually play at Kahili when I'm on Maui, easy to get on, decent rates and not too busy. Never played King Kam, too expensive for my level of play. I wouldn't have played Plantation either if it wasn't for my cousin's son, I don't play at the level to pay over $250 for a round of golf.

Yep, vacation golf is different than at-home golf when it comes to $$$$. Of course, we all value our discretionary expenditures differently. We're lucky here because we have some rather stunning courses that for California (Hawaii, Vegas, Scottsdale) are reasonably price. We can play Sandpiper for sub-$100, for instance, and I might drop $40 at La Purisima.

In some sense, Plantation has some Pebble Beach to it. Neither is solid all the way through the routing, but where they excel they more than excel.

I'm officially on the shelf for a month or so, golf wise. Been having nagging shoulder issues and at the moment it looks like rotator cuff tendonitis, Only really bugs me on the first hole while golfing, and now idea how I hurt it, but physio and no golf until I see some improvement.

Golf has been pretty meh this summer anyway. Playing 9 holes a week, so haven't gotten into a groove. Highlight of the season was an eagle last Thursday powered by a 215 yard against the wind 4 hybrid to 4 feet. And the most shocking part was me making the putt. That will keep me happy while I spend a prime month not golfing.

Haven't played a lot this summer with the awful heat wave running through the deep South this year, it's almost unbearable. However did play two weeks ago and shot reasonably well (83) considering the above circumstances. We were all gassed by 13 and limped in to the bar looking rather ragged judging by the reaction of others.

We hit a spot of whether a few weeks back when I was in Alabama. Just a different way of doing things compared to our desert or playing here with a coastal breeze going all the time.

Golf is such a funny game. I really didn't want to play my Tuesday night league and was hoping for rain. A few storms rolled through and we got off a little late, the past few rounds I've really been struggling off the tee and I just wasn't into it. I started off with 2 pars and my attitude changed for the evening. I played the best 9 holes of the year for me so far and needed a par to break 40 on #9, of course I shouldn't have looked at that before I teed off on 9. Double bogey and a 41, I'll take that every time out though. Looking forward to my round Saturday morning now.

Last week I organised 12 of us to stay at The Silver Reef Hotel/Casino near Bellingham, WA. We played 5 courses in the area, partook of fine food and wine .... and generally misbehaved!

Lots of fun! 16th year in a row we've done something similar.

Just got back from Maui. Played at Kapalua Plantation course. Front 9 was a killer for me. I wasn't used to the course and wind and where to hit the ball so I probably shot 8 strokes higher on the front than the back 9. On the back 9 I settled down and learned to hit the low stingers so the wind didn't affect the ball flight as much. But the putting greens were tough and hard to read, fast/slow, break or no break. I'm a bogey golfer but I shot under bogey on the back 9. Didn't help that I shot atrocious on the front 9 but I still finished with a 94, for a bogey golfer not too bad - a little over bogey score.

I played with a senior golfer and his wife. He was pretty good, played in a number of am tournaments and probably was a low digit handicapper but he struggled with the course and got killed on the putting green. He probably shot in the 80's and was pissed at his game but we kept telling him that's why the pros played at kapalua. Didn't help that he was playing from the black tees but I guess if you are used to shooting mid 70s you would be upset for shooting in the 80's.

Yep, those annual things are great. We're at something like 21 for our September soiree. And we started a new tradition a few years ago with some friends coming here to chill, swill and beat the ball locally. I just dropped the last survivor off at SBA. For those who know the area we played Olivas, Sandpiper and twice at La Purisima.

Kapalua's greens are wicked. HUGE. And it is all about the trades and the grain. Grain is a very foreign concept to us around here.

Until this past week I'd played more golf in Alabama than near home in 2017. lol We got a good start when the Boyz were here and this evening friends asked me to play in the Y fundraiser on Friday and both of us in the Sunday couples hit-and-giggle at the club. Golf!!
