GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) was an eight months season. There were 30 plus girls in it and they stayed at the Riviera Casino & Hotel. Later on they moved to an apartment building off the strip. One move they did was the pile driver (deadliest move in wrestling) which is no longer allowed. They made between $300-700 per week. The show had one big backer who was the owner of the Riviera and an Israeli billionaire, Meshulam Riklis and in 1990 withdrew his support. The women went back to ordinary lives. Ursula Hayden (Babe the Farmer's Daughter) purchased the trademark in 2001 from Riklis. The girls recently got together at the Gold Coast at a banquet hall table. GLOW will now be a comedy on Netflix. The story can be found in The Washington Post weekly and the author is Gendy Alimurung Los Angeles.

FYI, Glow was released last week on Netflix. It's pretty funny.

I watched the GLOW documentary movie before watching the series. It put a lot of the series in context.

    I loved the series, BTW.

I'd love to watch the documentary. I haven't searched for it via streaming services... any suggestions on where to find it?

I have yet to see the Netflix show, and wonder how true to life it will be... not that I'll ever know.

I remember watching the show back in the day. It was so damn cheesy, and the acting was so poor. But I couldn't help but watch. I'd hate to read a transcript of my teenage fantasies regarding some of those women. I'm sure they'd be as cheesy as the show. Ah, the innocence of youth.

They had a magazine at some point. I owned a copy. It had cheesy articles and pin up pictures in it, a la Teen Beat. I don't know when I would have ditched it, but I'm certain it's not in my collection of odd periodicals and publications from the 80s. Otherwise I bet I could get $20 for it.

This was a great article I read last week:

It's definitely a fictionalized account. If you watched GLOW or the documentaries, you might recognize bits and pieces (e.g., Mel Rose is clearly based on Hollywood) but it's definitely following its own narrative.

    Watched it the other night.....

Like many documentaries, it left me wanting more. It was interesting to hear the stories of several of the ladies. I'm pretty sure I only saw the show a few times in central Wisconsic circa '86-'87. I lived in the Minneapolis area, but my parents were divorced, so I spent time during holidays and the summer in Wisconsin, and can't recall seeing it when I was in Minnesota. But we're talking 30 years now, so don't trust my memory.

The characters I remember most seem to come from seasons 1 and 2. What I've read via Wikipedia and news articles, most of the cast changed over between seasons 2 and 3. The documentary doesn't explain this, they simply act like it was one big, happy 4-year run for the show. I'd be interested to hear about why ladies left or were booted after two years, and how that affected them at the time. Of course the documentary was unable to get David McLane to participate, and that's unfortunate. I would have loved to hear his thoughts on why he felt it necessary to depart the program and start a competing program. (Wikipedia brieftly speaks to this.)

I remember seeing McLane's Powerful Women of Wrestling once... and that vague recollection of mine suggests that it was intended to be more serious wrestling. The GLOW matches were typically cartoonish. Turns out a bunch of the first batch of GLOW girls followed McLane to his new promotion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerful_Women_of_Wrestling

All of this sounds like fodder for my podcast.....

Oh yeah, I'm surprised the documentary or "Ivory" never mention the fact she parlayed her run in GLOW/POWW into a decent run in the WWF/E.

And you can buy DVDs of the old show for the low price of $25 from the GLOW website... I'm curious, but not $25 curious.

Yeah, McLaine was more interested in the wrestling and apparently the other producers were more interested in having pretty girls.

He has a "new" group now called WOW Women of Wrestling. They were in syndication for one year in 2000-01 and even had a pay per view, but didn't have season two until about 14 years later (and then only online).

The dude is an interesting cat.... given the things he has managed to produce between his pro wrestling stints.

I was reading that G.L.O.W was meant to be on Saturday mornings, like after a cartoon block. Yet in Milwaukee, it was on Saturday nights after the 10:00 news. I tried watching it, but I was barely into WWF (I was more of an AWA Guy, as that was the least cartoonish of the wrestling groups) and I bailed very quickly.

I also followed up by reading the Wiki page and had the same thoughts. It was almost as if the documentary producers felt that they worked hard enough to get the first group of women that they didn't have the time/money to find more of them.

As a "period piece" I really enjoyed the documentary. I just think they spent a little too much time on the reunion, especially considering what I learned in hindsight (from Wikipedia) that most of the cast was only there for two years and not the full four.

GLOW was actually the reason I started going to Las Vegas to begin with. Of course by 2001 there was NOTHING in the Riviera even mentioning GLOW. Not even on their "Entertainment Wall" that listed things that were filmed or held there. I actually have been lucky enough to befriend alot of the girls and even had an opportunity to go to California to visit Mt. Fiji in the nursing home she is in. I even got to participate in the first ever "AfterGlow Fan Party and got to go onstage and talk about my experiences with GLOW. Me and my current Room mate Mike are in this video.

I have lunch/dinner with the girls, and some even gave me their numbers so when I overnight in their cities we can hang out and chat. Great group of girls who absolutely adore their fans!
