Rio smoking question

May be staying at the Rio for the first time in years. The last time I stayed, people in non-smoking rooms smoked in the halls. I prefer a non smoking room and wondered if anyone who had stayed there recently knew if that was still allowed?

I've stayed at the Rio several times over the years and I don't recall smoking being expressly or implicitly allowed in the hotel hallways. I'm sure I would have remembered it if I saw it.

 

Was it ever really allowed? Or did Rio not care?

Generally, the hotels don't allow this, and I think it may even be illegal under state law. Smoking in the hallway of a non-smoking floor is a major jerk thing to do. Do you really think all those people paying for non-smoking rooms don't hate that with every ounce of their being? Being a smoker you don't understand, but that smell permiates and ends up in the rooms of non smokers. Those who are truly non-smokers can smell it in their rooms. Most all hotels I know of consider the floor non-smoking, not just the room.

 

Even smokers understand that smell is everywhere so anyone smoking in a hallway on a non smoking floor is just a jerk.

 

Umm, I am not a smoker and was asking because the smoke in the hallways was so noticeable the last time I stayed there in a non-smoking room. It appears that CET designates entire floors as smoking, so hopefully it will not be an issue.

My bad, I completely misunderstood. I thought you were a smoker who liked to stay in non-smoking rooms (which I've heard of) and wanted to know if you could smoke in the hall. I did have that problem several years ago at Planet Hollywood which is probably why I haven't been back there. I've only stayed at Rio once and it wasn't an issue but I think we ended up on a Diamond floor even though we were only platinum.

 

No, I asked the question poorly and can see why people thought I was trying to get around a smoking ban, after all North Carolina does grow a lot of tobacco.
Does anyone know if the Rio "Strip View" rooms have a good view of the fireworks on the 4th?

 

I don't know where the fireworks are shot from, but here's a view from the last "Strip View" room we had there.

 

Impenema tower is all non-smoking now I believe.Still allowed in Masquerade.

 

A lot, and I mean probably most casino hotels still put those ashtray garbage cans near the elevators on every floor. Even the non-smoking floors. Take a look the next time you stay.

I'm sure it is just a matter of maintenance, putting the same trashcan/ashtray combos on each floor means the cleaning crew only has to carry trash bags for that model. And broken units can just be switched out with no regards to the floor being smoking or not.

With that said, a lot of places will put sand in the ashtrays on the smoking floors, and nothing in those on the non-smoking floors. But you will see cigarette butts still crushed in the sandless ones since smokers assume any ashtray means "Go ahead and smoke".

I doubt its a Rio problem and more of an "it can happen anywhere when people have no regard for others" problem.

I'm saying all this as a smoker! But when I have my kids with me I always book non. And when the elevator doors open and I'm pushing a stroller through a cloud of smoke, I get a little pissed.
