We stopped in that place once to check it out. Had a beer and played a little. For a dive it's not bad, friendly bartender and full of truckers and bikers as I would expect. I don't remember the BJ rules being that good. This was day time I'm not sure of the vibe at night.

If it was still around, I would say the Boardwalk. My least favorite on the strip are Harrahs and Flamingo. The ventilation sucks in these casinos and just do not like their vibes. Also, do not like PH. I always get disoriented in this casino and wander around like Spinal Tap trying to find the exit.

I've stayed at Fiesta Rancho. It was clean and quiet. It's nowhere near as bad as places like Opera House, Poker Palace, the old Gold Spike, The Western, Lucky Club. It's got an excellent Mexican restaurant with over 100 Tequilas....And an Ice Skating Rink. Hardly bottom of the barrel....more like lower middle of the barrel. I've also played at Alamo. It's right across the street from Silverton. It's just a truck stop with Slot Machines and a Blackjack table.

For anyone who never got to experience the Western, here's a great Time Magazine video article on "The Last Nights at the Western". It lasts about 20 minutes, but if you're a Vegas fan, it's hard to stop watching.

Wow! I just watched the "Western" video. Does that bring back memories or what?? I was there 3 times out of my 11 trips to Vegas. Now that's my kind of place! Gamble a bit, get a free meal, get half in the bag and go home. These newer places with the newer machines just are NOT Vegas!

Agree 100%. You can have a lot of fun in the fancy places on the strip, but most of the Vegas memories I have that will last a lifetime were made at places like the Western, the old Klondike, the El Cortez, etc.

I have to vote for Lucky Club now that the Opera House is gone. Grungy is fine but feeling like you are in danger is not. We went into the Lucky Club with my daughter on her 21st birthday for some match plays and the place just has a bad feel. All eyes on us walking in the door, etc.

At the Opera House my wife hit a royal a few years back chasing a promo of some kind. It was extremely uncomfortable and a security guard escorted us to our car.

P.S. Going to be hitting Lucky Club again soon because a match play can't be skipped. No 21 year old this time though.

I just went to the Longhorns website and found this:

Join the fun at Longhorn Casino, where you’ll enjoy the loosest rules in town and $2 minimum bets 24/7.

    Loose rules:
    • Players may double down on any first two or three cards.
    • Unlimited splits and re-splits except for aces. Aces may be split twice for a total of three bets.
    • After splitting, you may double down on the first two cards only.
    • Surrender: You may surrender your original hand for ½ your bet.

    • I may have to check it out!! Wonder what the max bet is? Hopefully not $25.

Worse casinos are/were Klondike (Vegas Vacation), Circus Circus, Luxor, Boardwalk, Slots of Fun, and Speedway Casino up north.

One of the most fun nights in Vegas Ive ever had was a night spent @ Western.
Aztec INN isnt much but i dont find it scary at all.
Alamo casino had some good BJ rules dont know if they still do
Wild Wild West is much more grimy now than it used to be

I stopped and played this last month. Didn't understand what it was until I saw someone double on three cards. Didn't get served a drink the 45 minutes I played. Older dealer thought he was an expert BJ player because he dealt cards. Won a little bit then left. I would go again if I could get served a drink, bus drops you off close.

I vote for Mardi Gras. Place is dead, small and you're given a hand pay every time you cash out. Tough looking area too.

Worst: Lucky Club and Longhorn - big time dives and creepy as well
Nicest: Aria and Bellagio - I feel the most upbeat in these two places
Overrated: Cosmo and Venetian - I just don't like their layout or lighting or the general gambling vibe
    Underrated: Luxor

I wanted to add Wynn to the nicest, but it's more like a museum-nice to me. I feel like it's built more for the decor than actually gambling in it.

How about those two (??) located in the old downtown section of Henderson (or as a local co-worker calls it, "Hender-Tucky")? Eldorado and, uh, {mumble}? :)

I don't get in that area very much, but last time I did the area did not look very inviting.

I believe the max is $100/hand, daily BJ tourney is fun at noon. Great coffee shop. Longhorn is my favorite dive now that the El Cortez got all fancy, Longhorn also has $1 miller lites 24 hours a day, other beer is always $2 or less. You can get comp drinks playing 5 cent VP. No lights on their machines

Great info in this thread. The main reason I started this thread was to try to find out if some of the places I'd heard so much bad things about were as bad as the reviews. Don't want to offend anyone by saying this but there are a lot of "Vegas Snobs" out there that run down places if they aren't five star. Definitely have a few more places I want to visit and a few that I'll steer clear from haha.

Now come on girls, on our March 2015 trip we stayed at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. Every morning the Pokie Queen and l had breakfast at the Aztec Inn, she had no problems with that. However, no tip was ever left after she discovered that it was included in the bill. Says something about the place, and maybe us. l most definitely want value for my money when in Las Vegas. Now by that l mean experience wise, could stay at home wrapped in cottonwool. Don't believe what others tell you, they are not you, go try yourself. What could possible happen?

As is well chronicled, I'm a Hard Rock fan, so hopefully not a Vegas snob, but I gotta tell ya, It blows me away that some posters on the board fly thousands of miles and then flock to places (dumps) like Ellis Island, Silver Sevens, etc. I know... I know... to each his or her own, but I sure don't get it.

I hear ya, and it's been going on as long as I remember. The term "dump" was frequently used back in the Usenet days to refer to the Stardust, particularly the "dorm rooms" out back. I also heard that term referring to the Sahara long before it closed and, quite frequently, actually, to the old IP.

Nowadays, it seems like that moniker is most frequently used for Circus. Sometimes with Excalibur, or as our one friend calls it, Egg Salad Bar. :)

I'm surprised no one mentioned Vacation Village, which would give the Western a good run for its money! I still remember how filthy the felt was on the table games, and the fear we had on paycheck cashing days, when the dawn of the dead locals would show up to cash their checks.

We'd go for one reason, maybe the best promotion then or since, spin the promotional big wheel within 24 hours of your airline arrival, with 2 spots on the wheel resulting in airfare reimbursement. Worst case, you'd win $2. Actually, the real worst case, the one "win" we dreaded, was the "2 free nights in a suite" there!

They regularly offered a coupon for a free hot dog at the bar with a $10 buy in. I never was brave enough to risk my life eating food prepared there, even for a comp.

I loved Vacation Village! I would fly in and that would always be my first stop to spin the wheel to see if I could win back my airfare
