Sam's Town worth a try?

Likely going to take Boyd up on a 3-night offer in early September. Have stayed downtown, Gold Coast and many times at Orleans. Hear a lot of good things about the Boulder Highway properties, as far as gambling odds are concerned. Is it worth the extra time and money to check it out for a few days?

 

I would say so. If you get tired of being in one place, take their shuttle to downtown or the Strip.

 

I would give them a try. I really like the place. It has everything you need and has a relatively large and not too crowded casino.

Of you decide to go and spot Harry the dealer, say hi from his two female friends from Holland. He'll tell you a nice story about our country and how he got kicked out. He told us 3 times already

 

Always worth trying new places. There is a couple more casinos close by to try out also. Four days there was just nice enough for us then we were ready to move elsewhere.

Was never a fan of the food there but all the dealers and cocktail waitresses were extremely friendly.

The shuttle to the strip is really good also so you can get out and about.

Boulder Highway is a very busy road though so be aware if crossing over to other casinos etc etc

 

This has actually become more or less our "home" casino, having defected from the various CET properties along the strip.

It's a fun casino. Lots of good gaming options. Lots of the machines I love. My money lasts longer there and I have more frequent bigger wins there.

The hotel is fine. Nothing extravagant but clean and comfortable and such.

The food options are, well, there. The buffet is ok, one of the better cheaper ones. If you go there without expecting haute cuisine, you'll probably enjoy it. The new steakhouse (Angry Butcher) is very good but ex$pen$ive for what you get! The new BBQ place (Big Mess - one of the worst restaurant names I can think of!) is good and reasonable, but not outstanding. I'm still p*ssed that they took out a great coffee shop for yet another TGIF and closed Billy Bob's for Angry Butcher.

Parking is free and easy, with easy in-out compared to the CET places on the Strip.

Cocktail service is consistently inconsistent. Sometimes they come around faster than you can drink them. Other times it's like a 12-step program!

The main bad thing about it is that it's wayyyyyy out in the toolies! Walking distance to only one other place (Cannery).

If you're a light sleeper or if you want to nap in the daytime, ask for a room that does not face the court. The roar of the show will wake you, and I am a fairly sound sleeper.

Headed there tomorrow for the 4th time. Really like the casino! Rooms are okay. We always rent a car, so being out of the way is not an issue and there is the shuttle to the strip and downtown. The hotel is very similar quality to Gold Coast and Orleans.

 

Sam's Town is great. Good VP. Decent buffet, ice cream shop, movie theaters. All good!

 

Definitely worth checking out. I always compare it to a Giant Cruise ship with free drinks.

 

The only thing weird about Sam's Town is that the BJ rules there are not the same as Gold Coast and Orleans... Can't remember the exact difference but I think you cannot Double Down after split at Sam's Town, but you can at GC and Orleans. Not sure why Boyd is inconsistent across properties. You can't Double Down after split at the downtown Boyds' either.

Go for it. I love staying on The Strip but do tend to head elsewhere also. You will not have any regrets.

How is their sportsbook there? Thinking of taking the shuttle over to watch some NFL this September.

Yeah The Cannery is a short walk with Longhorn on the opposite side of Boulder Highway but both easily walkable.

 

I think it all depends what kind of person you are. If you like to stay in one area then Sam's town is your place. Not much going on in the area, there is a Walmart across the street and the Cannery and Longhorn a short walk away but not much else in the neighborhood. If you are the type that likes to walk the strip or want to visit different casinos then you may not like Sam's town as you will need to drive or bus it to get to downtown or the strip or elsewhere and it isn't just a 5 minute drive or ride either.

I wouldn't consider staying at Sam's town because I like to walk around and visit other casinos so I like downtown better. I do drive to Sam's town about every other trip I take but only to gamble or eat with friends. I have friends who stay at Sam's town and get full RFB and even limo to/from Sam's town and they spend most of their trip at Sam's town so if you are that type then Sam's would be perfect for you.

 

Everything is within walking distance if you really like to walk!

We like ST. But the first time we stayed there, it was for 5 comped nights. That was way to long for us. Our room was facing the courtyard right behind the mountain where the show is! It wasn't that bad because the last show is 10pm and we were never in our room before that.
I think 3 nights would be plenty. We do like the fact that Eastside Cannery is within walking distance. We also like the fact that they have the free shuttle to downtown and the strip. Also like the favorable VP all over the property. We will be staying there for 3 comped nights in July. We will have a room on the outside ring this time. We have not been to the pool yet though. Anybody have any thoughts about it?

 

We like ST also, but only for about three days out of our 10 day trip. We normally stay about three days downtown and then another four days at the Orleans. As for the pool - it's nothing special, but it's a good spot to cool off and never very busy. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't seem to get much sun. Don't expect to get a drink out there. They have a spot where they seem to be able to serve drinks from but in all our visits it has never been open. On the upside - noone will bother your if you bring your own beverage!
