Why is Mirage so inexpensive to book?

I'm currently scoping out a possible fellas trip for the end of August (could be any time in August, really, but we're wanting to be in town for the Mayweather fight, just for the atmosphere).

In all of the variations of dates I've tried, the Mirage is coming up as a surprisingly cheap place to stay. Like, cheaper than Excalibur. That doesn't seem right.

I'm aware that Mirage is an older resort, and not nearly as glamorous as it used to be. I'm also aware that room rates are offset by a $39 resort fee per night. But given that other hotels to which that also applies (such as Monte Carlo and PH) are costing much more, something doesn't quite seem right here. Is there something I don't know about, such as asbestos/bed bug infestation/some wild and crazy thing that always seems to happen there like frat boys doing backflips off the parking garage?

Please let me know. I'm wanting to propose this plan to the boys soon and if there's any reason I shouldn't book Mirage for us, knowing about that would be excellent.

Side-note, we're a group of four mid-20's guys... do you think we'll be digging the pool scene there, or should we be looking elsewhere for a good time in the pool?

    TIA!

Looking at the rack rate calendar, Excalibur is still cheaper. The only weekend where they are close is the Mayweather fight, which makes sense because Mirage to T-Mobile is a bit of a hike.

If you are getting it for the Excalibur $29 week night rate instead of $79 at Mirage, snap it up! Weekends in august look closer relatively, but mirage is still about $50 more a night (~$129 vs ~$179).

There isn't anything going on with the mirage that I know about. I'm not a fan of the casino, but love the hotel.

The pool is okay, but the party pool is at Flamingo across the street.

    Excalibur also looks overpriced imo.

I can't see exactly what the rates are, as I'm booking through Expedia, for flight/hotel together, and it's in Canadian dollars. We'd be going over a weekend in any case, so it would be the higher rates at any property. If it provides any context, I'm currently seeing Mirage for $744 CAD ($560 USD) per person for four nights Thursday 24th through Monday 28th. Separately, the flight is showing as $479 CAD ($360 USD) per person. So, I guess deductively, we're paying $200 USD per night on average all-in, except for the resort fee. Since there's no known limitation of the Mirage, are you thinking I could do better booking directly through MLife?

The location relative to T-Mobile isn't a big deal to us, as we're not going to see the actual fight, we'll be watching it elsewhere.

I've heard that Flamingo is the place to be for pool partying. Can we pay for access as non-guests, or arrange a cabana as non-guests? Or is it easier/better to just stay at Flamingo?

Unless you have a big playing history with them no you won't do better with mlife. Rack is currently $930 USD for 2 guests before taxes and fees. I would take the Expedia deal before it's too late.

I dunno if you can buy into Flamingo pool. You can buy into Mirage's toptional pool though. I have no idea how worth it that is though. I'm cheap. Lol

Are you putting all 4 in one room for the $200 USD per night avg as that would be $800 USD which makes more sense and in the range of the $930. But still a better deal. I'm getting $306 cdn before fees and taxes on expedia for Mirage. It's the proximity to T-mobile for that weekend which is why NYNY is higher. Otherwise Mirage would be comparatively higher.

You should also consider how much you want to be down there for the fight. It will be buzzing down there but since the announcement the hotel prices have doubled and tripled. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing atmosphere (I'm going to be there but I booked my rooms on Monday before the spike). Also if it is like the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight they will blackout PPV in the Las Vegas area so you would have to pay to go to a viewing party to watch it. Most of those on the strip started at about $150 pp and went up.

Yes, the proximity makes sense. And that does clarify the cost thing.

The PPV blackout isn't something I considered... many thanks for the heads up! Do you have any idea how soon places might start announcing viewing party tickets? None of us have got the money to go see the actual fight, but would definitely pay $150+ to attend a viewing party.

We stayed there on our last trip. I get better comps value elsewhere, BUT that's the only reason we wouldn't stay there again. If we were paying for rooms? It would be absolutely be one of our top picks, if not our top pick. If you're paying for rooms....you're getting close to a high level hotel, but still enjoying way better rates.

I'd absolutely book it if the numbers work. I would just suggest get a tower room vs. Regular. Not much more, but a MUCH bigger bathroom, with a separate shower and tub, all marble, and NO shower curtain.

Inside, it's a beautiful hotel with lots of good food options. I also liked the slots...once I found the right machines.

If you're getting a good rate, it's not because the hotel is sucky, it's because you lucked out and found a good rate! :)

PS for comparison, we have been staying at Aria, Bellagio and Cosmo, so I'm spoiled, and still give it a thumbs up!

Mirage is fine. If you are looking at "package" deals, those rates were set long before the fight was announced. They may go up soon.

Pool there is fine - not a big party but actually a pretty good pool.

To my Canadian friends. For what it's worth, I'm getting better prices (for my dates in fall) on Westjet (flight and hotel) than Expedia or Mlife. Saving about $400 on trip to Cosmo. All Westjet's prices are in Canuck bucks.

I love the pool at the Mirage... Just get there early (Like when it opens) to make sure you get chairs.

You think the mirage is cheap???

There's way cheaper at the 4 star level. (even though mirage is technically 4.5 stars)

Cheap relative to other lower-star properties, certainly. It's not Four-Queens-on-a-Wednesday cheap, but when it's coming in lower than Excalibur, and I think also lower than TI, that definitely feels "cheap" for 4/4.5 star resort.

Mirage is the type of hotel that gets hurt in its rate by resort fees. And MGM doesn't seem to value it. When the newer top tier hotels came online, it seemed to get pushed further down in the pecking order than it should've been. Considering how long the renovations have been needed at Monte Carlo and the fact they are underway now shows they are getting a huge boost from it's location. There are lots of negatives for it right now.

Mirage is my home-base for half my Vegas trips now to date and upcoming (3 of 6). My host treats me well as best she can...the service and staff are friendly(aside from the MGM Grand roulette table outside HL Slots...they are awesome!) and its a pretty good Strip location so I can bounce down to Bellagio or a quick stretch of my legs to MGM.

I think its lost its luster and age is showing.

They had to steal customers for aria from somewhere since it's still not better than bellagio.

Plus why is MGM going to invest in a property that is on an island after the sale of TI versus funneling money into its south strip monopoly? It wants you locked in to its gaming and amenities.

I agree Multi. I recently booked a week-plus stay there in December. I was really surprised how reasonable the rates were when I booked at their website. I never play for comps, so that didn't enter at all in the decision process. I love the property, great food options and a great sports book. I'll be playing my BJ next door at Treasure Island but I look forward to staying there again after about a five year hiatus.

How many rooms are you guys getting? 1 or 2?
You should just book 2 people for the hotel and flight combo and 2 people for just flight
    Have you tried that?

    Pretend you are going solo
Flight and hotel combo for yourself
When you check in, ask if there is a room with 2 queens
Even if there isn't, you could probably just ask for a rollaway bed or something

Mirage is fine, years ago I stayed there 1 night and loved it (probably 2007). Everytime beyond that I went back to look at room rates, they were so much higher than most of the newer spots, I never went back. They were on par with Bellagio, Wynn and Aria. I was actually surprised at how long they kept the rates so high, seemed like it would scare most people away. Maybe they have such a following they were able to charge those high prices and have finally come back to reality with so many other options.

Even though I booked a trip at the Mirage, I'm a little curious the last time they remodeled the rooms, especially on the 24th & 25th floors and specifically the Resort Tower Rooms?

The Mirage is fine. No big concern for why it would be cheaper.

And I would at least compare airline/hotel direct bookings with the package deals. The package looks like a deal in part because they are charging you individually for the hotel.
