    Hello Fellow VMBers!

We all are familiar with the call of the CW's as they make their rounds.

Anyone happy and content with the growing number of cocktails being served in those puny PLASTIC cups?

They fill those puny things with 85% ice cubes, you take a couple of sips, and...it's gone. You're suck'in ice.

Worse yet is when craft beer is served in those plastic cups. Gets warm fast.

I stay at places like the Cal or Orleans, so being that they are lower tier type of places, I guess I can understand their drinks being served in plastic and somewhat small in quantity. Nowadays even when I give a 5 dollar tip I still get....you guessed it, plastic, couple of sips, and suckin ice......

I do remember back in the IP days when I could get tall glasses of ice cold screwdrivers and such. Back then a 5 dollar tip had them bringing them so fast it made my head spin. Literally. LOL!

What really surprised me was my last trip at the Orleans. I ordered a screwdriver one morning and low and behold, I had a tall, ice cold glass of screwdriver heaven. A 5 dollar tip and I had 2 more in quick succession! I was elated, happy, and drunk. Later that evening, plastic again. WTF?

Anyone know of any mid tier properties that consistently offer drinks in tall, ice cold glasses? I usually play at Boyd properties and aside from the surprise at Orleans, the drinks are usually in plastic.

Which is the main reason I just order an ice cold domestic or imported beer. But it's still the same....2 or 3 (LONG) sips and it's.....gone.

The last time I ordered an in-house brew at MSS while playing blackjack, it came in a pint glass...but I'm not sure if they still do that.
Golden Gate still serves in glassware, but they're pretty small, narrow glasses...in their HL "salon", they serve in true, high-quality cocktail glasses, so large (in diameter) that they don't fit in the drink holders.

Love Cosmo where you get your drinks in the glassware appropriate for the drink; wine in wine glasses, martinis in martini glasses etc

I occasionally play VP in GG at the bar and I drink draught. You always get a glass but they are fairly small. When I'm in there just drinking rather than playing I find you will get a plastic glass. Although they will put it in a proper glass if you ask them, I know a few staff in there so most automatically put it in a glass for me. Like the OP I'm not a fan of plastic glasses.

Giving the casinos the benefit of the doubt (gasp... did I just do that?!), I suspect that plastic cups may be given as a courtesy in "walkable" areas such as the strip and Fremont Street... perhaps on the way of thinking that one might like to walk around or go somewhere else before they've finished their drink.

For me, part of the "Vegas experience" has always been having the luxury of walking around with a drink in my hand... something I don't usually get to (legally) do elsewhere. If I'm given a mixed drink/cocktail in a glass, I might feel pressured to remain at that casino until I'm done with my drink. I do realize that most places offer plastic cups at the door, to pour your drink into before going into the street. But honestly, I've never seen anyone actually use those cups, perhaps either because they didn't know about it, or they were too drunk to think of it as an option.

In any case, by comparison, I feel it could be possible that more "remote" off-strip/off-Fremont properties would make a habit of offering glassware, save for super low end places. The cost liability of a plastic cup is the material cost of the cup itself and any reputation loss from possible perceived cheapness. The cost liability of a glass is the cost of washing it, an allowance for eventual damage, and theft from people who walked off with it. Take theft out of the equation, and it doesn't really look like it's a money thing.

For what it's worth, while I'm usually a beer drinker, I've had "real" glassware downtown at DTG, GG, and GN. I don't play much on the strip, so I can't tell you much there, though I can say that I've been served with a glass at Excalibur, and a plastic cup at PH, both times playing $25 BJ. Go figure.

Best drinks IMO, Cosmo. always serve my mixed drinks in glass and they are always STRONG as FUQ.

I was down in NOLA with my girlfriend in April and loved how instead of ordering drinks verbally, you order from the machine instead and they are comped. We prolly drank 3 times more than we usually would because of this...

Lately, as in the past 5 years or so, I've been doing bottled beer on the floor almost exclusively. Those tiny watered down drinks with heavy ice were not even worth the tip!

I remember back in the 1970s the server would come up to you "Hi, the Stardust would like to buy you a drink ..." instead of rushing by at a sprint whispering "cocktails" or something. I also remember getting a Singapore Sling (a tres trendy "umbrella drink" at the time, and quite potent too) served in a real glass daiquiri style glass.

The cocktail waitress at the Westward Ho actually did that our first trip! Stopped, introduced herself, asked our names and said that! She says the Westward Ho would like to buy you 2 a drink." It wasn't busy. But, yeah. She got us pretty drunk in a hurry too. That was Vegas.

Yeah, they move too dang fast at most places. That's why my husband and I would observe the route they were taking and plant ourselves in that route with a stack of $1 bills on the machine. The first time she comes I'm like "I'm staying here and I'm not changing my order." Not that it matters anymore with the freaking machine deciding when your next drink is...if you even deserve one. And the drink itself is now useless...blah.

On our very first date my wife ordered a Singapore Sling. I thought she was pulling my leg. I never heard of that drink before. I recall on future dates and at different places some of them never heard of it either.

I wonder if they still make that. Note to self: Next time in Vegas ask my wife to order a Singapore Sling and see if the millennial barkeep knows how to make it....

Ugh, I hate drinking out of plastic. Even on glass, I want a wine glass when I have wine, not a small regular glass! Same goes for a martini...the glass is half the drink for me.

Unless you're charging teenage drink prices...don't give me a teenage solo cup. (I know, I know, free, but you get the point!)

The Singapore Sling was very popular on the east coast in the late 1960s and 1970s. I know you could get them in California (and LV) without the bartender going "huh?" and looking it up in a cheater book.

The recipe I remember was something along the line of sloe gin and cherry brandy and collins/sour mix/squirt with gin/vodka/everclear thrown in for an additional kick. :) Yes, they could be recklessly inebriating! If they were done right they tasted kinda like Hawaiian Punch and had very little "boozy" taste or aftertaste. Yes, they were commonly used as a "mild" drink to introduce a nondrinker or virgin drinker to the habit, not that I would ever admit to doing that, even in my younger and more foolish days. :) :) :) At parties I remember making Singapore Sling by the bucket and even throwing in a bottle of Boone's Farm for good luck. (Yeah, I know, EEeeeeewwww!)

In those tiki bars (remember them?) they would be served in a fancy glass, usually a daiquiri style, with a little umbrella and a fruit garnish. In some bars they would be served in just a highball or tall glass. I remember them (and other fancy drinks) at Don The Beachcomber (anyone else admit to being old enough to remember that?) at the Sahara.

Ugh.....plastic, especially for wine. I think beer is the only remotely acceptable drink for plastic.

I haven't noticed the plastic on the casino floor I guess. But......we are usually at a VP bar.

I have noticed the proliferation of plastic or foam cups in the rooms though. We usually take our last drink of the evening to go to the room and wash and reuse that glass for room drinks for the duration of our stay.

I bartended in the mid seventies and made a lot of Harvey Wallbangers......I don't think I have seen a bottle of Galiano in twenty years......don't think I ever made a Singapore Sling.

It was a college bar so I never really learned to be, or needed to be, a very good bartender. Draft beer, rum and coke, and our most exotic drink that was ordered a lot were Tequila Sunrises. I had it easy.....wish I would have mastered martinis back then.

I was also thinking another reason for plastic on the casino floor is liability? Cuts down on broken glass, cuts, and stuff.

I rather have glass, though. A big one, preferably.....:evillaugh::drunk:
