Hey everyone, I'm heading to Vegas July 3rd - 6th (monday - thursday morning). I have the night of the 3rd and 4th comped at the Luxor, but am giving the 2nd night to my friends as well as a myvegas reward for the next night (they're paying the resort fees). I on the other hand will be staying downtown the nights of the 4th and 5th (first time downtown!).

Right now I'm pretty torn between staying at The Plaza (25% off room rates right now, but online reservations down) and the Golden Nugget (59 a night + no resort fees).

Here are current prices for a basic king (no partner means I don't need the best room):
The Plaza: $116? (their online booking is down and the 25% off expires tomorrow. This rate is from Expedia via vegas.com 25% off + an Expedia $7 discount)
    Golden Nugget: $133

I'm leaning towards The Plaza right now because their pool seems nice and has gaming (I always hear that the GN's is crowded), they offer early check-in, hear negatives of GN's casino, and my partner loves bingo so this would be a trial run before our next trip together (though knowing her she'll probably want to stay at the cosmo instead :p). I love a good sportsbook and will be betting both days and watching some Major League Soccer. Comps also mean a bit to me, so that could factor in. Oscar's also looks like a nice place to eat, especially with a 25% off coupon. Also, I'll be playing in the GN's multi-day slot tournament.

GN just has that awesome location right in the middle of everything. The pool also seems potentially a bit nicer in the heat than a bare rooftop.

Input? Seems like the consensus in other threads is stay at the GN and gamble elsewhere. I'm open to anything though. Are the rooms at GN really so nice that I should stay there?

I'm a GN fan never stayed at the Plaza. I like to gamble there as well but your right there a lot of GN haters on the board.

If your partner is a "Cosmo" kind of girl I would look at the GN or Downtown Grand and gamble/bingo at the Plaza. Pools are great at all three. If you want a steakhouse I would look at Vic and Anthony's at GN. Check out the Distinctive Dinning Deal on their website if you want a deal or go to Andiamos at the D. Andiamos and Pizza Rock (New Yorker Pizza) are my favorites downtown. Be careful after your first downtown stay you may not go back to the strip...

as far as location, everything downtown is close enough unless you just really hate to walk. the GN pool is nice but it can be sardine city. did you try calling the Plaza directly and ask for the 25% off special? I stayed at the Plaza for one night in May, it was fine for a solo traveler, and it offers a large spacious sports book. either would be fine for 2 nights. I think the GN is kind of tight with comps.

GN has worse odds downtown for gambling. plus higher limits. I would think Carson Towers room, which is not close to casino or FSE. If you gamble at Plaza see host who is on here all the time.

If it's your first time Downtown why not try a Downtown hotel. I'm surprised the room rates are comparable, but the only upside to the Golden Nugget is the rooms. They are nice. Instead of my usual list of GN downsides, I'll just say the Plaza casino is more friendly to players who are under the $25/hand limits. And while it's true that all casinos downtown are within walking distance I like my late night play to be close to my room.

Haven't yet, but will be doing so later today when I have the time. Figured I'd test the waters right now.

Been staying at GN last 10 years or so. Always have had good service from all employees, love the restaurant choices (Grotto for Italian, Chart House for seafood, Vic and Anthony's for steak and there are a few other restaurants. Enjoy the gambling we hit the floor early morning and back to room 10 pm or so so I can't talk of the late nite gaming. Had a few times it was really crowded but that was rare. Room always good. My daughter and son in law came a few years ago for first time to GN and said this is now their go to place, liked it better than strip, they said easier to gamble. Plenty of casinos close by but most of my gambling done at GN.. Pool is good but get there early, bj at pool. As this is your first time downtown you can check out the Freemont street deal (assorted bands, light show, etc.). I think you'll have a nicer room at GN. Can't speak about bingo. I could ramble on but I'll stop.

Online reservations came back for the Plaza and the 25% deal is about $10 more than the Expedia deal, lol. El Co was real tempting until I factored in their fee, not worth it with no pool. C'mon, drop that amenities fee and I'd be booking now.

@FullPay, what do you mean by "If it's your first time Downtown why not try a Downtown hotel." Meaning that GN is "strip like"?

I went ahead and booked at The Plaza for now, but willing to cancel and change if a deal pops up or someone really sways me, the 25% off just had to be booked by tomorrow and the GN deal has another week. Right now it just sounds like I'm going to have to plan another downtown trip to stay elsewhere sometime soon (oh, the humanity!).

I stayed at GN my last trip and I gambled there. With respect to the odds, that must be a VP or BJ issue. Outside of lower odds on the craps tables, both their craps and baccarat was just fine. Actually, more than fine. I liked their high limits area, and they also have a dedicated baccarat pit that is mostly private near the Rush tower. At least that's my understanding as it was closed for a BJ tournament when I was there. I can't imagine I'd relax at their pool as it's belly button to another body part. I can't speak to their food, but I will say their breakfast place I found too loud. They offered food, but I wasn't interested outside of breakfast.

I've also stayed at the Plaza, but my last time (Super Bowl) I wasn't feeling very well, and essentially no played them, so I fell off of their radar. First time I've ever done that, but it happened, so I'm probably done there.

I'd have to give the nod to GN, partially becuase of baccarat (Plaza doesn't have it), but mostly becuase they spelled out exactly what my play was, and how they treated that level of play. They tracked both actual and theo at HL bacc.

There have been some comments on here about their employees being snotty. I didn't get that at all. I do tip almost everyone however. There was one problem in the room, which I didn't tell them about, but housekeeping pointed it out, and they called and offered a food comp, which I declined. Housekeeping left me alone. No delay getting in getting a marker at the table. You can buy markers back right at the table, which is nice in my opinion.

Anyway, that's my experience. But I pretty much keep to myself, don't get drunk and mouthy, tip everyone, and have no issue eating whatever I want to eat, notwithstanding whether my food is comped or not.

I'm going to reemphasize this point one last time. I really, really appreciated that they told me my exact theo and actual loss, told me I covered my stay, and something that more casinos need to do, asked me to come back.

I would strongly advise against the Plaza. The Golden Nugget is a very nice property with a lot to do. The pool can be crowded, but there is plenty of space.

I added it in before posting.

Edit: also, surprisingly Expedia does indeed show the resort fee. They do a "what you pay now" followed by a "what you pay at the check-in" and add those two.

similar thing happened to me in May when I stayed at the Plaza for one night. it was not a comped room but casino rate or reduced rate booked with a host. it was my first and only time staying there. because of flight delays and some other schedule conflicts I was running way behind on my own vegas schedule. I checked in way late, had been up for 24 hours and so on. before you know it, it was time to check out. no played them (or very little), but certainly not intentionally.
but anyway, the room was fine and the check in and check out was smooth. I would like to stay there again.

That is correct. Third party companies do not include our resort fees. Also, when you book through third parties we casino hosts do not have the option of comping your hotel stay should your casino play warrant it. Booking through one of us casino hosts, casino services, or using our PlayLV website gives our guests the chance to have great casino play and possibly getting your room nights comped.
