2/5 so, if anyone has played in LA casinos, there significantly different then Vegas 2/5 in the way it plays. People push pots, alot more disposable income, extra. Hero $800 BB AdQd V1 $560 ish, VpIp around 80 (no joke). Opening $30 every pot has position on me. Just won a bad beat jackpot for $45,000 a few nights ago, so he really doesn't care. He is super lose preflop, calling station post flop and turn, has thought spikes on the river when he starts to "think" V2 Old Asian guy. Not too many reads as he sat down, $500. Seems a little tight, not to much "asian gamble" in him. V1 UTG +1 raises $30 standard, V2 SB calls, hero sees AdQd and thinks about 3! but knowing V1 is calling any 3! and playing a bloated pot out of position, seems not fun so I decide to flat. I figure if i flop well, I can have enough skill to extract value against him. Pot $90. Flop QsQcJh SB checks, What do you do? I think about leading out because, I am kinda afraid that V1 might check back because, honestly, I have no clue what his range is here since he is so wide. Obviously, the best case is to check raise, hoping V2 calls as well, but I'm not sure if this will happen.
Rainbow flop, top kicker, chip pusher as preflop aggressor. I think you usually check. Unless you have seen V1 slow down on every flop he whiffs and just call. Any aggression by you right now chases out V2, and might get one less bet of value out of V1. Even if V1 checks behind, that could get V2 to lead the turn into you, or get you loose turn calls when you bet that. I think the times that V1 bets and V2 calls (and then one of them maybe even calls your substantial raise) will earn you so much money that it will more than make up for the times he checks and you lose 1 bet worth of value.
I gotta be honest I don't think the idea of a 3 bet is as bad as you think it is if V1 is calling often with worse. The hand isn't hard to play postflop when the SPR is down to 2-3 I'm checking this flop to let V1 cbet
I think I am following the positions: V2 is SB, Hero is BB, and V1 is UTG+1. If that isn't right, please correct me, because I am basing this on that. Here are my thoughts: With you (knowing your cards) and V1 in the hand, I am just not worried about V2. Any action by you or V1 after V2 checks is either going to make him fold anyway, or play like an open book. I am not even going to consider V2 as I think through this hand - if he comes firing back, you know trips isn't going to take this pot down. I like a bet, not a check, as your action. If V1 wasn't so aggressive I think a check/trap play is the best way to play it (that 8 or 9 out of 10 times scenario like the recent hand I posted about with flopping the nuts). If you told me you were going to check with the intention of check-raising the flop, I'd like that too. V1 probably isn't folding anything here (anything that was strong enough to raise with preflop anyway). I can see him calling a $60-$70 bet with any straight draw (including gut shots), backdoor flush draws, any Jack or Queen, or low pocket pairs. Only way I see him letting go is if he's nursing some small suited connectors that couldn't have whiffed worse (no backdoor flush draw, no way to get the straight with 2 more cards, etc). If you're going to play the check/trap game with him, expect to have to deal with V2 more often too. I'd rather bet and isolate (even if it makes V1 fold somehow and V2 check/called). If you do get V2 out of the way with a bet or a check/raise here, play this hand like the nuts. If V1 got lucky then so be it. There are few hands that are beating you here, and if he happens to have one this time (he always opens to $30 you said) then "nice hand" and move on.
To beat you right now, he has to be holding JJ or JQ. I think you're ahead and have to bet for value. I'd bet $45, but partially because I'd almost always take a stab at this pot if I'm first to bet. The likely outcome is that both fold. That's just what happens when you get hit by the flop this hard.
3-bet preflop, v1 will call. Cbet flop, v1 will raise to take a stab at pot and then call Check turn, villain goes all in, you win the pot
All great points, appreciate the feedback. Well, since I am probably not ever going to play against anyone here, due to location, I expose myself in some manner. I was ready to rack up prior to this hand and I felt like taking the lower variance route because I was planning on leaving. Is this ideal, obviously not but I ended up just calling instead of 3! So, as V2, (SB) checks, I donk bet out $30 hoping for some check raise or at least to flat calls. V1 then stares right at me and says, you didn't hit this board, laughs and folds. Results: V2, tanks a bit and calls, which looked like a super reluctant call, so I am ranging his range as pretty weak. Turn A, V2 checks again, I bet out $40, he tanks again and calls. River T, V2 checks again, I bet out $80 and he insta folds.
I would definitely 3bet here for value vs someone who will call pretty much any 2, this also has the advantage of getting the pot 2 way if the Asian guy folds. As played I would check-raise flop and give him a chance to bet and this will also give us position on the SB which may call a bet from UTG+1. Another line could be to Check-call flop and lead turn as this really pisses people off and they can do crazy stuff if they think you are full of it.
