    Hi Guys,

Coming September i'm going to Vegas with my buddy @Kevke for this trip we rented a Ford Mustang from Avis for two days to do some sightseeing and drive to Laughlin.
We are from Holland and we don't want any risk regarding damage or accidents, but we also don't really feel like being ripped off by the salesmen of the rental company.
What insurrance do you guys recommand?

On our November 2016 trip we rented from Advantage for three days. We went to Laughlin for an overnighter, crossed the river into Arizona for breakfast the next day, casino hopped Laughlin and then headed back to Vegas. Our strategy was to book the best rate available for the car, knowing that we would buy the insurance (CDW) that is offered by the rental company. Advantage informally calls this CDW "bumper to bumper" coverage. Additionally, because we were headed into the great unknown (to us at least) of the road to Laughlin, we also bought the RSP or Roadside Service Plan in the event of any car trouble along the way. The CDW ran us $25.00 per day, and the RSP ran $7.00 per day... so almost $100.00 extra for the 3 day rental. Since we budget for this in our travel plan, we consider the $100.00 well spent for the peace of mind of not having to worry about being liable for any damage to the car and roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown.

There are strategies for extending your personal auto coverage or having coverage thru your credit card, but since you are an international traveller, special terms and coditions may apply. We have access to those two options as well, but we've decided buying the CDW makes for a completely hassle free rental experience, and that's what matters to us most.

I would suggest you contact Avis and see what the terms, conditions and charges would be since you are international travellers. And whatever they tell you, get it in writing. Have a great time ..!!!

My personal car insurance includes the same coverage (collision, liability, and comprehensive) for rental cars with the same deductibles. Before I rent, I always check with the comapny again. I also carry my insurance certificate just in case. I have been fortunate not to have to test the validity all this and hope that I never have to!

Check with your personal insurance company first to see what they cover. Being from outside the country, it may be different than what us Americans get. Check there first.

Being from outside of the country I would highly recommend getting the insurance thru the rental car company. I work in the insurance industry and can tell you that you personal insurance from home isn't going to cover the car rental here in the U.S.

one thing most personal auto policies does NOT cover is loss of use if the rental is involved in an accident or otherwise, If Avis, or whatever company can't rent that car due to it being in the shop, they can at their discretion charge you for the loss of income... I've seen it happen.,

ps.buy the insurance from the rental company in this case.

Yeah I'd agree, being non-US residents, the easiest thing is going to be to just take the coverage from the rental company. Even if your own insurance or a credit card program supposedly covers it. For two days, just pay for it and then relax.

Try a European agency like rentalcars.com or netflights.co.uk. They will include all insurances necessary with the quoted price. Rental cars.com also have a price match policy. If you find something cheaper, screenshot it and email them to ask for a match. This has worked for me a few times. They have a great cancellation policy too, so if you find cheaper after you book, they will still match the later cheaper price.

    I hope that helps.

We currently have a rental car through them. No excess at all after we paid them. Going through the screen on Alamo check in, everything said included apart from lost keys. We trusted ourselves to not lose the keys and we were all set.

One thing not to do is take the side road on the road down to laughlin, the sign says "christmas tree pass",. We took it one time and thought what the hell, lets see the tree, it was 30+ miles of gravel and rocks, when you get in about 15 miles it's hardly a road at all, our rental was bottoming out , you could hear rocks scraping the floorboards. To top it off, there was no pass, and definitely no tree. The rental agreement will say "off road use prohibited" but we did this pre GPS.

Check with your credit card company. Some cards include insurance coverage for rental cars when traveling.
