So I booked my brother into Luxor because he has a pyramid / ancient Egypt fascination. Expedia came up with "run of the house" room or something to that effect. What sort of room does that yield? Is there one room style or location preferred over the others? Thanks for the info, I've never stayed at Luxor...

You'll probably get a pyramid room by default and it sounds as if your brother would like that. Personally I prefer the tower rooms. The slanted walls and going up/down the inclinators are cool at first but the tower rooms are nicer.

He'll love Luxor. The Cleo rooms in the Pyramid are renovated, so he might like those best. Haven't stayed in them, always the tower, which are pretty nice and include a separate tub and shower.

Luxor gets overlooked sometimes because it's not new and they've "dethemed" (made it generic) the place. At least as generic as you can make something that is still a giant pyramid. But it's a good value, especially if you like that part of the strip. Convenient tram to/from MBay and Excal.

I'm not sure what percentage of the pyramid rooms have been updated so far. When I stayed there in January, the check in lady told me it would be $10 extra per night to stay in one of the "new" upgraded Cleo Pyramid rooms.

I wanted a Tower Room anyway so she gave me one with no extra charge.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they're trying to detheme the place. Kind of hard when your building is a giant pyramid. Might as well go all out with the Egyptian theme.

So, the preference is Pyramid Cleo over Tower? What's fun in that part of the strip?

Serious question - do we know why they do this other then because they can? They did this to us last time we stayed at MB - I didn't mind, but a room is a room, why charge more for something upgraded (other than they can and people will pay) when eventually, all the rooms will be upgraded.

Temporary increase in price to try to recoup some of the remodeling costs a little faster maybe?

    Default room is pyramid room.
Ask for either a tower or an updated Cleo in the pyramid.

Either is fine as long as he doesnt stay in the basic pyramid. You dont want his first view of Luxor to be negative since the basic rooms are really worn.

We stayed in the Pyramid rooms (basic) two years ago with our kids. They wanted to stay in the actual pyramid, so we opted for that versus the newer Tower rooms. It was fun in a quirky way taking the inclinator up and having an angled room. There's a large walk in shower but no tub. It was also hot as hell in the room (we went in July). For us, staying in the pyramid is a one and done but glad we tried it experience.

We enjoyed a day at the pool and rented a cabana. All five of us really enjoyed our pool day. We opted for the quieter pool that didn't have the DJ. We spent the entire day there and again super hot, but lots of fun.

The only on property restaurant we tried was Tacos & Tequila and it was good. Good food and margaritas, but as I recall, no kids menu. Definitely an adult hang out place.

We spent a lot of our time going back and forth to the other properties that flank Luxor (Mandalay Bay and Excalibur). It was pretty easy access to both. We also went through Excalibur to get to NYNY quite a bit.

Gambling wise I like slots, and I don't really care for Luxor's Casino. Easy enough to pop over to Mandalay Bay or NYNY casinos which I prefer more.

    Hope your brother has fun!

In terms of shows, Carrot Top is there and he is hilarious. Many dismiss him as a "prop comic" but he's really funny (I know it's subjective) and it's affordable. Skip the Cris Angel show.

Agree on carrot top. Very funny guy.
Titanic and bodies can fill an hour but imho not worth it.
Mandalay bay house of blues, mj one and the cocktail. At I can't remember the name of are all good for an evenings entertainment.
Excalibur has Aussie bee gees, dicks and a good walkway to nyny.
Plenty of decent eats at all three places. Tender at the Luxor is a fab steakhouse.

    to OP:

Run of the house means whatever room they want to put you in. No options unless MAYBE they are offering some sort of upgrade when you check in. Do not count on that.

Question : Did you price a room direct with Luxor to see what it would cost? Most hotels these day try hard to encourage folks to book direct and offer the best price out there. And almost all bookings allow you to cancel upto a few days before, or in some cases the same day or the reservation.

    Just wondering

Tacos & Tequila gets good reviews here on the board but I haven't ate there.

There are a TON of restaurant choices over in Mandalay Bay. I recommend the Chicken Pot Pie nuggets at Rx Boiler Room (happy hour!). Go get drinks at Skyfall Lounge on top of the Delano for the view.

Will be leaving Scotland for vegas tomorrow morning and booked to stay in the Luxor on a run of house booking tomorrow it's our honeymoon so hoping we get a decent room. I'm absolutely buzzing for it though as think Luxor just looks cool as f#ck and the Mrs still likes the theme hotels. just watched vegas vacation and now watching casino to really get in the mood.

Check out the $20 trick thread here to see what that can do for you.

Stand-alone tickets were about $50 Cdn less than what Expedia charged for the whole package... I am going to have him try the $20 trick when he checks in as I will be at the Venetian checking in - yes, I am a bad sibling sticking my brother in a suspect room without a tub while I live it up.
