I'm sorry. I don't post about all the stuff going on in my life but I just can't keep it bottled in any longer. It is becoming overwhelming.

Monday after Easter, my brother and his family were vacationing in Cancun. On Monday, my brother suffered a massive stroke and needed emergency brain surgery. He was rushed to the hospital where they refused to do surgery until they were paid $51,000 up front. He has Tri-Care insurance for veterans and they purchased travel insurance. The hospital would take neither one.

Meanwhile the clock is ticking as my nephew, his wife and my SIL are scrambling to raise money making calls back to the states to banks, credit card companies and my nephew's wife's employer to raise the money. My nephew cashed out his IRA. They finally did and the surgery performed, but the prognoses wasn't good. They say time is everything in the case of heart attack and stroke.

They wanted to move him back to the states that day and asked when he could be moved. They said 3 hours, but there is another bill for $10,000. More scrambling. They get him to a hospital in Miami and he goes on a machine, but they can't find any brain activity. Organs are being harvested as I write this and he will soon be returning to WI.

My oldest brother is now in a hospice and on pain meds to make him comfortable, but not expected to last a week.

    This morning his wife died.

I didn't want to burden VMB with my troubles, but I do feel overwhelmed and writing that helped a tiny bit.

Joe I am so sorry for your loss. They did the same to a buddy, though not as serious in nature of course. I will say a prayer for you and your family. Just awful man.

Wow! Just WOW! Joe. The words don't exist that can make any of this alright. The insensitivity, greed and unprofessionalism that brought your family to this place should never have happened. I guaran-dam-tee you none of the people involved in putting your family through this would want it to happen to them. And your family took all of the necessary precautions and yet, this still happens! We're glad you shared your pain Joe. Pain shared is pain lessened, especially when shared those who care. We love you Joe. Hang tough bro'.

We are so sorry for you and your family, what a horrible set of circumstances..........

I would also like to thank you for sharing the info about the hospital wanting cash up front, it opened my eyes (and I'm sure many more) about insurance coverage out of country.....to think they would deny critical care until paid up front, someone needs to rot in hell for eternity for that!!!!

Wow, that's really scary to think you could have a life-threatening medical emergency and be refused treatment, simply because it happened to occur while you were visiting a foreign country.

Very sorry for your loss Joe.

    Sorry for your loss Joe.

Unfortunately if you go outside of the US you may encounter that type of mentality. They don't want to fight with insurance companies so rather get everything upfront from you. That's why you always have to beware when travelling to other countries. But can't do much if you suffer a stroke or other illness while on vacation.
