I want to go downtown this year , but the wife thinks it's a bit shady ... I feel security is decent down there , not sure why she disagrees ...

No less safe than the strip, unless you go wandering off Fremont. No different than if you wander off strip.

I'm disabled and have never felt worried when travelling up and down from El Cortez, even at 3am.

Four Queens garage. Parking is reasonable if you don't want to validate.

Valet would probably be the safest. yes, if you are looking for free street parking then there are some areas that I wouldn't recommend parking but if you are parking at the hotel casinos then I wouldn't worry about you or your car's safety. You are more likely to get accosted if you are walking in some areas of downtown (the areas away from the FSE) but if you stay on or near the FSE you should be relatively safe. That said, you still need to be aware of your surroundings and where to park (light in a lighted area, have cars nearby, etc.).

    don't argue with the wife.
If she doesn't like downtown, whether rational or just being paranoid, then don't go there by all means.
