United seems to be having a number of related PR issues lately.

Why not just increase the amount of compensation offered until you have the required number of volunteers? Seems like a pretty easy way to avoid removing someone that really needs to be on a certain flight.

OMG, they traumatized this man. He'll never get over this.

Nobody should give this airline one penny of their money. Make a stand!

This is a good blog post about the whys/whats of overbooking and legally your rights.. This has a great part of information about this story I had yet to hear.. this flight was technically NOT a United flight, but one of those United Express flights "operated by.."

I of course, would of booked those crew members a rental car. The destination is 4 hours away by car anyway. Cheaper than offering compensation.

This is ridiculous. I remember I was on a flight to Vegas and they overbooked the flight and were going as high as 1300 in compensation for switching flights. Then again Delta is a class act compared to Un-United

Agreed. Instead, this practice is going to cost United untold lost revenue from the bad publicity, and possibly even a nice big settlement.

You might not think that if you were a passenger on the plane that crew was supposed to be on. The way it was handled was shitty, but I'm certain that paying customers get bumped on a regular basis.

I guess what is the protocol when someone refuses? I've always wondered what they do when no one volunteers, guess I got my answer.

I would bet the crew has contractual rules about deadheading being only on aircraft. Also the drive more like 5 and 1/2 hours, IF I65 and the Borman are behaving.

United now gives you a choice. 1 set of boxing gloves or 1 carry on
