be careful-----all non-stop flites are direct ------not all direct flites are non-stop----

a direct flite means one need not leave the plane from the departure city to the arrival city-----it could have 1 or more stops along the way-----

I took a direct flight on our March trip that stopped in El Paso and it wasn't that bad. The flight times were better than the non stop and it only added about and hour to the trip. The only negative was the SWA flight attendant replacements.

Not always. You can save some money on Southwest by not buying early bird and taking a direct flight with a stop.

After the passengers have deplaned and they take a head count, you are free to change seats and move your luggage forward.

I have saved money flying that way and the flight with a stop was only an hour longer.

put up the post because I am aware of a person who instructed a travel agent to purchase the least expensive direct flight to vegas and wound up with a stop in phoenix assuming they were getting a non-stop------also------check some of the trip reports where the posters indicate they had a direct flight,it may or may not have been non-stop----

I only want one up and one down. You start throwing other stops in there, you might end up with weather delays or mechanical break downs.
    One and done for me.

Though our little wonderful airport offers non-stop to a few of our key destinations, plane changes and stops are still standard fare for us. It is amazing what folks will do to avoid LAX! (Hell, these folks drive to the Bay Area often to accomplish that.)

My non stops from Tampa are always cheaper than direct or stop flights

And that's probably because the direct flights from Tampa don't travel in a path that's conducive to discounting. The direct flight from Tampa to Las Vegas goes through Baltimore and takes 3 hours longer.

My direct flight from San Jose goes through Orange County. That's why I qualified my statement.

I used to use Top Flite balls whenever I played the game. In those days I wasn't good enough to worry about the expensive balls. Lately I find a lot of balls, I haven't bought balls in years. :poke:

Actually there are some "direct" flights where you have to get off and switch planes.

That doesn't really meet the definition of "direct flight". That is a "connecting flight".

In my experience (and admittedly, all of my most recent experience is with SWA) , if you change planes it's a different flight number and therefore a "connecting" flight. If you stay on the plane, the flight number remains the same, and is a "direct" flight.

As an example, from the SWA flight website, 3 flights from TPA to LAS

    6:00 AM 8:00 AM 1577 Nonstop <-- A nonstop flight

11:10 AM 4:25 PM 1889 1 stop No Plane Change <--A direct flight with 1 stop

12:30 PM 5:20 PM 1154 Connecting Flight 1815 1 stop Change Planes IND <--A flight with a connection

Direct flights may make more than one stop. In the early days of SWA flying coast to coast, my flight from Oakland to Baltimore made two stops, but kept the same flight number all the way through.

also with SW the non stops usually are 800 series planes and hold 175. Non direct seem to always be the 700 series and hold 143? At least in Tampa. we have 2 non stops a day and at least a dozen others.

OP. Funny you mention as I know a lot of folks who use the term "direct" and "non stop" interchangeably and as you noted they are not the same. Direct flights I don't like unless I really want a stop over in a particular city, e.g., Dubai!. Non stops I love. :)

Non-stop for me. When buying tickets for trip I decided the $30 savings wasn't worth my time.
