Hotel Room With A Safe That Has A Key

I know some hotel rooms have safes that actually have a key.
What do you do with your key?
Keep it on you or hide it in the room somewhere?

 

In my 40 years of gambling, I have never seen a hotel with a safe that has a key.

I would think that they would all have been replaced in the "digital age".

When was the last time you saw one and where?

 

MSS - and we usually find a spot we both know, such as under a lamp, or in a shoe. Fremont also. Cal did but not sure with the makeover

 

I've been in rooms that don't have a key and upon check in to my room the safe battery was dead. I took 45 minutes for someone to come to the room to fix it.

 

I've done both. I worry about it both methods though!
I much prefer a combo safe, but we have been staying at MSS, so I have to deal with it.

 

Anybody remember where Dustin Hoffman hid the key in Pappillon?

 

Actually MSS and the Cal (prior to renovations) have wall safes that have keys. The key is rather large but I usually just attach it to my car keys since the stuff they attach to the rental key is just as bulky.

Not sure about the Cal, I will find out in 2 weeks when I'm there. I will report back on it.

The warning on the safe is that there is only 1 key so you will have to pay $35 or something to open the safe and create a replacement key and lock since I think they have to drill the lock to open it.

 

Bally's indigo still might, can't remember.

Why would you hide the key in the room versus carrying it on you? I don't get that. It's like all burglars look under the Welcome mat for the key.

 

MSS, The Cal, and Fremont have wall safes that have a key. Recently, the West tower of the Cal had renovations to their rooms and now have digital safes. The East tower of the Cal still have wall safes with keys but will undergo renovations soon so they also will probably have digital safes after the renovations.

When I had a room with key safes I put the key in my wallet. I'm very particular with wallets and prefer the Tumi brand wallets that have pockets for loose change. I put the key in there.

 

OK, admittedly, during the first 25-30 years of my gambling existence my bankroll has never required the use of a safe . . . .

 

Are the safes at the Cal bigger than before or are they still narrow and small? I usually store my tablet and camera in them while I'm out gambling. It wasn't big enough to hold my netbook so I had to lock it in my suitcase.

Just got back from my trip and if I were to guess the safe in the west tower of the Cal is approximately 12" deep by 15" wide by 10" high. I would think it would fit a netbook but I'm guessing. My wife could fit her IPad easily with tons of room to spare.
